Hi all,

For awhile now I havent been really happy with my 07 CD equipe 5 dr. So searching around Ive found that Mazda Rx8's arent priced too badly at between 22-26k for something with around 80thou on it in good knick.

Should I do it shouldnt I do it? The other question is mods on the astra, thus far its halfway through a ICE install, would you finish it or return it to original?

new alloys and lowered springs, would you leave change ect?

Personally I wouldn't go the rx8 from experience. Do a bit of research on them and see how many problems they have and the amount of maintenance.

Also does NSW not have a power to weight ratio for P platers such as yourself. I think you will find the RX8 fits into that category.

RX8`s like to drink both fuel and oil !
Stick with your Astra.

get an astra sri turbo, can quite easily get one of those for 22-26k, at 22k you're looking at an '06 one with around 50thou.. :D

IMHO I'd only go for a S/H Mazda RX8 if 1st. it's in absolutely perfect mechanical condition and 2nd. if you know alot if not everything involved in proper care and maintanance of the type...

As already mentioned by others, they tend to lend themselves to over use of engine oil and fuel consumption, but this is not a mechanical fault, rather the normal way in which its rotary engine operates...

Other than that, they are a very unique and IMO a very good looking and 'fairly' practicle car...if your set on one and the above is of no concern, go for it...otherwise your other choice or choices are any other vehicle you fancy in the same price range...as suggested above you could look at a S/H AH SRi T maybe...:)

As fun of a car the rx8 is. unless you are willing to treat it well, learn about the rotary style engine and except its high maintenance costs. Don't bother as there are plenty of other cars that are just as fun for the same price.

Im happy to keep the mechanical side maintained, Im very good friends with a mechanic thats been in the business the last 20 or so years.

Other than the honda's what else would people suggest?

Does he have much knowledge/experience in rotary engines? Jump on any rotary forum and see how important this is.

Just to give you a heads up on it from experience with the car. Expect to replace the clutch every 60 thou on average, expect the gearbox to go within 200 thou, subframe to be removed to replace plugs. Also allow 2 - 5 minutes to allow engine to warm up before driving it or expect a rebuild much sooner and never switch the engine off if it has not been running for at least 5 minutes.

There are so many cars out there, what are you mainly after? performance, looks, economy, practicality?

apart from the RX8 drinking its fluids and needing alot of maintenance, the few ive driven haven't been very inspiring either, i reckon a falcon or commodore 6 has more go and didn't handle all that well either!!!

having had alot of experience in wasting money on cars, i'd say keep your car, finish the stereo etc and keep it till you can get a decent car off your Ps, then theres alot more choice, youd have saved more money, good cars would have dropped in price and insurance will be cheaper!!!

Practicality is next to zero in my needs, along with economy, basically I want something more 'manly' I guess. Ive came to a point with the astra where Im going "what is it actually going to achieve".

Simple answer (dont mean to offend anyone) I dont want a hairdressers car:arf: and more bite would be nice at the accelerator

Chris I dont believe that NSW has KW per tonne rules?

If your after performance n/a's your Ideal options would be dc5r, the sportivos or even the civic type r ep3..

It all depends on your preferences though if you really like the rx8 then go for it.. But if you like another car
and your just settling for the rx8 coz of restrictions then your better off sticking with your car now and just save up until you get out of your p's and get what you really want..

I really do think the RX8 is the way to go for me, Ill be keeping whatever car I have (within the next 8 or so months) foreseeably for at least 4-5 years while Im in uni. The only other car I really like would be a boxter or a 350z but the $$ factor rises quite high there

you can't drive a 350z or a porsche!

http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/licensing/downloads/p1p2_conditions_dl1.html

as you want more go and can't go for a blown 4 or an 8, how about a good N/A 6. a late model falcon or perhaps something left-field like a ralliart magna.

N/A 4's with VTEC/VVTI-L are fun in their own way but you can't beat the torque of a large capacity engine. and sometimes having to spin the engine past 6k to keep up with traffic is a bit embarrassing.

it sounds like you're set on an rx-8 - hope you can find a mechanic that knows what to do with a rotary engine. having to remove the subframe to replace the plugs is incredible!

No offence champ but you are kidding yourself and clearly not listening to what many have told you so far :nonod:

Your best option is to keep what you have till you are off your P's (as many have pointed out) and then buy what you really want or at least give yourself a bigger selection pool :wink5:

However based on your post above, unless you are MDR ( Mum and Dad Racing) funded, you will have no chance of affording the up keep on anything semi luxury and above whilst trying to pay for Uni and related expenses!!! That includes if you work etc to :wink5:

Moral of story is keep the Astra for your time at Uni as it costs little to own in comparison, you have plenty of time to have a flash car :swg:

No offence but financially I am more than capable of buying the rx8, I was given the astra I own now as a gift for the hard work and study ect I had already completed. This to a most part pays for the rx. Having spoken to a good mate of dads who has just sold his rx the costs arent as big as they are made out to be, yeah it chews oil and can drink a fair bit too but its not unmanageable.

Im not saying Im going out to buy a Rx8 right this minute, if the right car comes up and the right buyer for mine then all will be good.

At 17 I had a Corolla whilst I was studying....all my working mates had GT Falcons,GTR-XU1 Toranas and the like.

Kept the Corolla saved a few bucks from here and there waited about six months into my first job and bought a Six Pack Charger !
Also a few years road experience under my belt was a good thing.

Not trying to sound old and wise but you probably get where I am coming from. :swg:
