I think you will be right unless it is louder than about 95db under load.

in vic I removedthe rear muffler and basically have a straight through pipe to the rear and tip...just under legal

Mine was wayyyyyyyyyyy too loud with the rear muffler came off, so I put a 2 inch straight through (resonator). It added almost no gas flow restriction, but gave the car a nice deep burble.

not sure if it sound levels apply there
i believe that you are not allowed to remove parts from your exhaust
eg. if your astra came with a cat, resi and rear muffler
then
it must have a cat, resi and rear muffler
if you had all that and it is under 95 decibels then its legal
even if the mufflers are hollow

Hmm Laurie said it's ok to take the resi out so not sure if that's true. He could b wrong tho...

im not 100% on the finer details but thats what i remembered
when my friend asked about whether his 180sx was legal or not
turbo back 4", hollow cat, hollow straight through muffler
i just laughed
