well the AH 2008 has 5 stars and AH 04-07 has only 4 so I dare say no more than 4

Thats not quite right. Any AH with 4 air bags (CD and CDX) have a 4 star rating and any AH with 6 airbags (CDXi, SRi, SRi T and the updated 6 Airbag CDX) has a 5 star rating.

My AH SRi (MY 7.5 2.2L at least), has 8 airbags.

2 x A Pillars airbags.
1 x Passenger thorax/chest (above glovebox) airbag.
1 x Driver thorax/chest (steering wheel) airbag.
2 x Side seat airbags.
2 x B Pillar (on centre columns) side curtain airbags.

AFAIK it's the same airbag setup used in the 2009 Astras.

Also the article has no real merit now anyway. The SECOND car they scored the safest (Prius) has undergone a worldwide recall for brakes issues. So kinda laughs in the face of the entire test.

I think you'll both find that the maximum airbags the AH Astra has is 6.

Mine's the same... it has Airbag written on the A and B pillar, but it's in fact one curtain airbag

Here you go:
http://www.euroncap.com/tests/opel_vauxhall_astra_2004/185.aspx

Side impact
A very impressive side impact protection system that includes seat mounted thorax and pelvis side airbags. The Astra also has a head curtain airbag fitted as standard to protect those seated in the front and in the rear.

Technically there are actually 8 airbags, but they are referred to as 6. Here is why.

1. The A Pillar Airbags (1 on each A Pillar) are Front Side Impact airbags.
2. The Passenger Airbag
3. The Driver Airbag
4. The Side Curtain airbags are grouped. The seat is lower side curtain, and the B pillar is upper side curtain.

So in a decent side impact there is complete coverage from from A pillar to rear door area, from roof to floor.

Hope that makes sense.

All that comes out of the A pillar though is a rope

The physical curtain airbag drops down from where the grab-handles are to somewhere back past the B pillar

Page 17 of this AH Opel Astra brochure shows it (even though it says Astra G - it's definately an AH brochure)

The picture gives you an indication of what happens...

Just got the AH 7.5 Brochure in front of me now, and under the Safety page it shows some of the airbags.

The side curtain from the B Pillar extends from the B pillar and goes back to cover the rear windows to the seat headrest, and forward to cover the main side window. It looks like a second airbag (possibly linked though it's hard to see), comes from the A pillar and covers the area near the tweeter, and the corner of the A pillar to stop head collision with it.

Then the passenger and drivers airbags come out to compliment the curtain/A pillar ones, and the side impact airbags are smaller and more concentrated on the rib area of the driver/passenger.

However all we need to do to confirm this arguement is call Holden, ask for an ex demo AH, and then take it to a demo derby with all airbags intact and let science give us the answer :D

I can confirm the AH has 6, not 8 airbags. The curtain airbag is one whole airbag running the length of the vehicle, it may be split into different areas but it is inflated as a whole, so therefore is only one airbag. Definitely 6 airbags not 8.
