Is the Castrol Edge 0W40 Oil too thin for the Z18XE engine?? I'm doing a service this weekend and am wanting to use a full synth oil..the castrol lube guide recommends the 0w40 for a 1.8 NA is that right??

i think the factory recommendation is 10w-40

0w-40 may or may not be ok. i know that when i used 5w-40 i got some rattling from the valve train on cold startup in winter - switched to 10w-40 and it went away :)

hmm....its what castrol recommends to use on there website. I just don't want to buy it and fark the engine by doing so because the oil is too thin

Maybe look at using mobil instead if you're after a fully synthetic... You'll get closer to the factory recommendation, if not exact.

I just checked the Mobil website too and they too recommend 0W40

U will prob find no difference to the 0w40 and a 10w40 except u will get more life from it but will set u back more $$$. Take a look at penrite they had a full synth 5w30 and was half the price one of my favorites. Edge is a bit over hyped

Penrite HPR5 was the one i was thinking of, it semi-synth

or check out their SIN0 0W50 it full synth if u want a full synth

100% Synthetic 10W-40 Hi-Tech Fast Flowing Engine Oil is what i use in my turbo mazda.

I change the oil every 5000kms

That seems rather a short oil change period for a fully synth oil.

True,

If changing every 5,000km, semi syn is more than sufficient.

One of the reasons to use fully syn is the longer life under harsh conditions compared to mineral oil.

I change mine every 10,000 using fully syn, or 7,500 if semi syn.

which reminds me I gotta change mine this weekend.

10W40- Mobil x2000, or Burson have a special, FUCHS 10W40 semi syn for $30

why do you change oil so often ??
in europe we will change 0w40 every 30,000km and 15w40 every 10,000kms, no one will change 0w40 after 5000km unless he is running a race car :D
as I remember in USA they change 15w40 every 5000mil around 8000km.

i use the Nulon stuff too and change every 7500km. i'm thinking of switching to 5000km intervals now as the Barina doesn't get driven as often since we bought our new car.

regarding change intervals there's a lot of controversy about it...every man and his dog has an opinion. for me i change regularly as cheap insurance against rather expensive internal engine problems.

in fact if you look at the 'extreme conditions' section of most manufacturers log books the change intervals are much closer to 5000km than 15000km - there's an argument that says all city driving qualifies for 'extreme conditions' :)

next question for you all...ryco filter or OE filter?? Bearing in mind i'm using a Full Synth oil. Currently i've been buying OE filters with no probs

i dont like ryco :P get a valvoline one same price roughly as a ryco from SCA

Probably is, but better to be safe than sorry.. $50 every 5000kms is a small price to pay when you think replacing my 2.3L DISI turbo engine will cost around $12K

I change my oil so often because after a few thousand kilometres, carbon builds up in the oil from the turbo...

Also the mazda turbo engine isnt very sound....a few have gone POP, so I said...i would rather spend small amounts of money now and know the longetivity of my engine.

Well I do a lot of freeway and city driving...my car is just over 2 years old and I already have 116000kms of sound driving.

I have had no problems with my car, many of my friends and members of mazda MPS club have had blown turbos and engines..

So I will keep telling myself that servicing my car with fresh oil every 5000kms is the secret to having a car with no problems (touch wood)

Mazda have in the log books to service car every 10000kms, but i havent let mazda service or touch my car since 70000kms...they do very bad servicing and I personally know more about my car than the techs.

Mazda use and recommend Castrol....but i have been using Nulon for over 40000kms now...with no problems.

i'm interested to hear the answers to this. there's a lot of hoopla made about oil but almost none about filters.

i used to use Valvoline filters but have decided that they are pieces of crap after getting one which was rusting at the bottom with the paint flaking off...so it's back to GM filters. only thing i dislike about the OE is the lack of a anti-drainback valve - everyone knows you should have one on a horizontally mounted filter! :yikes:

Had that same problem with a ryco. The filter was orange with rust!

Well i put the K&n flter in today with the 0W40 oil...it may just be be but it feels alot smoother on idle....she also holds revs a little between gears which i'm liking alot...so far so good

how about the Edge 5w-30?
my owner's handbook recommends 10w-30, can i use Edge 5w-30 instead?

my AH is due to service soon, it's a five-year service:
Oil and Oil filter(which and which)
Castrol Response Brake fluid super(brake fluid change)
Air filter(Ryco?)
Spark Plug(BOSCH FQR8LEU2?)
Coolant change
....
any recommended service places aboud Homebush,Strathfield and Burwood?

ryco is much better quality than valvoline.
ive never used an OE one tho so cant compare ryco to oe.

and brent, obviously havent changed oil in a while, no SCA has sold valvoline filters for well over a year.

Yes. It would be better. Lower "W" figure means "easier to flow at startup" (Actually it's at winter, but the physical property of any liquid should prove the same). In theory it will give better protection at startup.

Since you are not getting "thinner at operating temperature" oil, then the 5W-30 should be as protecting as 10W-30.

the Castrol AU says edge 0w40 and edge 5w30 for Z18XE

0W would be better at startup. If the car has any sort of noises at startup, usually by going 0W would reduce it significantly

40 would be quieter. When the engine has reached its operating temperature, 40 is thicker than 30, therefore absorb internal engine noise better

40 is thicker, so it should be protecting more.

30 would be lighter to rev. If you like revving or accelerate hard, 30 would be better.

I personally wouldn't play with the Viscosity at operating temperature. If manufacturer recommends, say, 15W-40, I would try anything x(<15)W-40, but never different than it, unless looking for acceleration performance like previous paragraph.
