View Full Version : Astra SRi / Vectra C / Mazda 3 SP23 Purchase

After crunching some numbers and looking at various cars, its time to turf the magna and get something newer

After a week of research, we are leaning towards three cars

2007-2008 Astra SRi
2005+ Vectra C CDXi V6
2004-2007 Mazda 3 SP23

we are going out to test drive an SRi this afternoon. But i wanna get some of your opinions and thoughts etc on these three cars and what to expect to pay for, what they are like power wise etc etc. i know none of these will have as much pull as the magna (bar the veccy c) but we want something smaller and its one thing we are gunna have to sacrifice

bear in mind we are limited to auto (dont give me the usual bull crap on manuals blah blah blah, the missus doesnt have strong knees and shes gunna drive it the most. so in advance, shut your hole :p )

also looking at a budget of about $21k which we can stretch to about $24k if the car ticks all the boxes

would prefer a dealer purchase because they come with warranty etc plus if we went for something 2007 then it would have a NCW balance on it

we havent researched it enough yet, but could possibly lean towards a 2004-2005 liberty if we know enough about it

Ange, im sure you will have a few cents to pitch in here ;) :p

seems like you're after a largist car.

what about a 2007 honda accord euro..

http://www.carsales.com.au/all-cars/private/details.aspx?R=7723336&__sid=1239FCDC57E7&YearFromShort=1651&__Qpb=true&Cr=4&__Ns=pCar_PriceSort_Decimal|0||pCar_RankSort_Int32 |1||pCar_Make_String|0||pCar_Model_String|0&keywords=&__N=1216%201247%201282%201252%201246%204294965322% 204294965100%201651%20393%20413&PriceFrom=393&PriceTo=413&seot=1&__Nne=15&trecs=10&silo=1011

if it has to be auto, you could do alot worst than the 5 speed auto in the euro- fits your budget and has warranty too.

In your price range, it would be my preference if you wanted a car with new car warranty. It's a honda, so doubt you need the warranty :D

I vote the Mazda.

I'd love to say the Veccy but its getting old now - if you can afford a newer car, go for that.

You could find a

Sri 3 or 5 door Auto.

Sp23 Manual only ? ?

Vectra Cdxi Very nice but try a Mazda 6 or Honda Civic or Accord!

How about the new cruze ? ?

+ 1

By far and away the most reliable/less hassle o/a vehicle there for a longer term service life...should also cost less over the owning period to service/maintain and parts are cheaper and more readily avaliable than for either of the Opels...so yes go for the Mazda !

Also as above the newer the better :)

we considered a 6 but the ones in our budget have heaps of kms on them
sp23 comes in auto but is a little harder to find
the accord looks great on the outside but the interior lets it down a bit.. plus we are looking for something sub 50k kms
cruze is fantastic.. but the 1.8 isnt and the oiler still too exxy :(
thinkin the same as both petes.. room is a killer but its another sacrifice.. and the veccy is gettin old too hence thinkin about the sri mainly

what are the 2.2s like?

its a z22yh in the newer 2.2's. Its a good solid engine that can take a beating. Only thing to watch for is oil usage. try not to leave changes any longer than 15k km in between. other known issues include the high pressure fuel pump and regulator dieing and a couple of people complaining about noisy timing chains that seem to rectify themselves after a few days.

id go for the Mazda. Coupled with the fact that the veccy and astra are no longer sold here, will push the maintenance prices up as far as parts and availability go, although i do see Holden keeping parts for the Astra a lot longer than the Vectra. (but they will charge you an arm and a leg for it though!)

The SP23 is a great car. in auto form it has the 5 speed box (06 - 09) or 4 speed (04 - 05) with steering wheel gearchange controls. Now that the new model is available, the older Mazda 3 should have come down in price.

:yikes:
thats cheap !!!!

would make for an easier decision with the SP23 because her mum bought a run out model last year and we have both been in it and its very, VERY nice

will still take this SRi for a run tonight so she can then compare it at least
btw its this one...

yeah of those three cars i have to +1 the Mazda too.

coming from the Magna an auto Astra will feel tragically slow, and the Veccie is getting on in years - Opels are not cars that age gracefully

i'm going to get panned for this but if you're going auto have you considered an Aurion? i think you can get a good example within your price range, gets to 100 in high 6's - and as you are looking to downsize, the car itself is not as big as you'd imagine :)

hazrd
7th December 2009, 01:53 PM
lol nah mate u wont get panned for that :p i think the aurion is a good car, had one many times as a rental when i was up in sydney for work last year

however, i did mention it to the missus and shes not too keen on it because its more the same size as the magna compared to the medium sized cars. understandably, any of the medium sized cars we choose we are gunna lose room and power, but its what we are prepared to do

i did forget to mention.. ill be looking at a daily in the next couple years (probably a V8 ute) so having 2 large cars wouldnt really be worth it ;)

Mazda - 2 & 3 Car of the year a few years back.

Mazda have done well and come a long way
Euro looks and performace warranty and repairs, Reputation. nothing else really in the price range to compair.

Now with the astra's gone, as we know with all other opels, Things start to get $$$ and even with a warranty holden dont really know. Even resale is dropping quite rapidly

As for colour, Black is nice but everything shows, hard to keep clean all the time. Or unless your name is shaun and keep every car detail product in you boot and have the time to keep in clean!

Jokes shaun :p all good!

How about The Focus Zetec or Mondeo ? ?

arent the mondeos pretty pricey?

7th December 2009, 02:32 PM
Well if it was for you ide say buy the astra although the price that guy is asking is way to much for the 2.2 and he says not negot. for your missus the mazda is a better car...shame the diesel is to far out of your range in the cruze as that would be a good bet and why oh why didnt they make the AH Diesel a 16Valve in the auto ???? DUH !

I know you said you were looking at getting a smaller car but have you looked at a Mitsubishi 380 Series 3. I know they look alittle boring, but a very solid car, good on fuel for there size, have good power and room. The pricing is good too.

accord euro or previous shape Liberty (suprised no one suggested it after ur first post suggested it) #3 my fav ;) as it will be the least sluggish one, if you get the plain old 2.0 liberty it may feel very underpowered.. i know the accord euros have a decent amount of torque and decent power out of their engines so in an auto it might feel zippy.

I was going to suggest the new Lancer VRX but i drove one a few months back in an auto with paddles shifters... could quite be one of the worst cars ive ever driven it as slow droney and paddles were on column not the wheel which is stupid, so stay away from lancers IMO.

Also this may sound crazy but if u have that kind of budget and u want to downsize why not look at a new last year model focus or fiesta or something??

A car wont have much pull with an auto unless it is carrying a v6 or v8 or a decent diesel (compared to the astras) really, so maybe the best bet isnt comparing to the magna for speed wise if your downsizing it as chances are it wont be a v6 anymore...

Don't bother with a veccy if you have such a decent price range.

I'm with brenton. Liberty's are solid cars with good grunt and economy.

Wouldn't go near a 380 though. Drove one last year and it had massive throttle lag.

Is the Astra SRI you are looking at the one with the direct injection 2.2L engine? If so, think carefully about where Australia is going with ethanol in fuel in the future. I think the 2.2 DI engine will only tolerate up to 5% ethanol in fuel.

+1
that said if you and the missus have fallen in love with the Astra go for it :)

just be aware that if you keep it past about the 5 year mark, compared to the Mazda, you can expect more frequent repairs, lower reliability and overall higher maintenance costs. i guess you'd know that already from owning a Calibra though! ;)

I beg to differ on this. although mine is the previous model of 2.2. Car is 7 years old. this engine has done 140k km and never missed a beat except for when it was run on an ethanol blend fuel (wrongly marked fuel bowser.).
Running cost have been quite low on the car even with servicing every 5k to 10k km.
If there were any major issues parts from the uk are a very reasonable price and would work out to be around the same as any other car on the road with the same issue.

ok, great to hear :) my Opel ownership experience has been somewhat different and much less pleasant. that said my Barina has the 1.8, perhaps the 2.2 engine is stronger?

Is the Astra SRI you are looking at the one with the direct injection 2.2L engine? If so, think carefully about where Australia is going with ethanol in fuel in the future. I think the 2.2 DI engine will only tolerate up to 5% ethanol in fuel.

interesting... i would have to assume though that this wouldnt happen in the near future purely for the fact that cars (like the astra) that cant take alot of ethanol fuel are still quite new and knowing that, wouldnt allow them to have this sort of fuel?
if they keep the 98 octane then we would just stick to that ;) calibra runs fantastic on it!

+1
that said if you and the missus have fallen in love with the Astra go for it :)

just be aware that if you keep it past about the 5 year mark, compared to the Mazda, you can expect more frequent repairs, lower reliability and overall higher maintenance costs. i guess you'd know that already from owning a Calibra though! ;)

LOL so true (luckily the old calibra has been running problem free for about 6 or 7 months now :D )

ill update on the astra vs mazda drive below...

ok, great to hear :) my Opel ownership experience has been somewhat different and much less pleasant. that said my Barina has the 1.8, perhaps the 2.2 engine is stronger?

from what ive read, the 2.2 is a much stronger engine, plus with the timing being run by a chain, that makes the 60 and 120km services a little cheaper :p

anyways
took a mazda 3 for a drive today (2007 SP23 sport luxury) and here are the comparisons i have of the two:

07 astra sri, 26,000kms, $23k
-handled well
-steering was tight
-torque pickup was smooth (there was a very faint whine but i had the aircon turned on and i havent driven a 4pot for ages so can only assume its the motor coz the mazda did the same)
-leather seats were comfy, very firm though (but with 26km on the clock probably still quite new)
-had plenty of room in both the driver and passengers seat (specially for a 6"4 storf like me)
-was a bit um and ah about the TID, looked a bit plain, but its not something that really bothers us
-was very quiet on the freeway

mazda 3 sp23 sport luxury, 88,000kms, $23k
-handled well
-GREAT turning circle
-felt a little more sluggish off the line compared to the astra which surprised me a little
-leather seats were awesome, they werent bucket like the sri but they were definitely softer, were a tad slippery lol i think they used too much leather cleaner on it
-wasnt completely sold on the two line display in the middle, also felt funny doing 60kms an hour and seeing the needle where u normally see 10kmh lol. was a little weird how the dash sorta comes out at you aswell
-liked the fact that it had the semi auto shifter on it unlike the astra
-unfortunately sounded quite noisy on the freeway

overall both cars are fantastic bar a few negatives that u could adapt to... however, the final decision is down to the missus and shes seeing the astra as better value for money considering if she wanted this particular model mazda 3 from a dealer with less than 30,000kms, we are gunna have to bend the budget too far that we couldnt afford

shes still thinking about it, but leaning towards the astra more...

You could add to your budget a CID (http://data.motor-talk.de/data/galleries/23024/3142536/1-2-15825.JPG) ;), just watch the prices (http://data.motor-talk.de/data/galleries/23024/3142536/1-2-15825.JPG) - they fluctuate a bit.

i was thinking about that for when it runs out of warranty ;)

what year model Mazda did you test drive??

it was a 2007. only problem we found (apart from the salesperson being a total douche) was the lower the kms, the further out of our comfortable budget it went :( i see a private sale one for 22k with only 20k kms on the clock but she really wants something that warranted for a while

the decision was made last night, and shes going to go for the SRi. It was comfortable, it was the right price, the salesperson was great (too bad about their parts and service division lol) and it had sweet FA kms on it

only question is... 2 cars, same kms, same price, ones around the corner, the other is back in albury (surprisingly, where we bought the magna from lol)

can someone tell me the difference between these two? i notice the black one has clear tail lights and the grey one has a frosted tint where the indicators are..

he made it clear he cant budge on the price, so im thinkin of gettin him to throw in a full tank of 98RON and some floor mats
was gunna suggest they do the 30km service before picking it up, but i want my mech to look over it when he does it so he can find any faults before warranty runs out ;)

With the rear lights, they were dependant on trim level I thought but could be ordered as an extra? One of the girls at work ordered the clear ones because they looked better when she got the car.

are these used cars from a dealer? because if they the dealer has plenty of room to move on the price...they make a small fortune on the resale value of used cars.

i kinda agree in what u say about the mazda pete, i can say that both cars were VERY close contenders, but everything we looked for pointed to the astra...
- caught her eye
- MUCH lower kms
- salesperson was great
- finance rate was extremely competitive
- and fell right within the budget

didnt get a move on the price, but the manufacurers warranty was extended by 2 years so now we have another 3 years new car warranty.. and we dont have to go to holden for any servicing OR repairs :D

LOL at all the carwash comments... it was bucketing down yesterday so its already filthy :o
