Most concept cars these days have gullwing doors during motor shows, they never make it into production.

Its just to show ppl at the show what is inside....

As for subaru going bonkers......the new liberty is a prime example.

How do you close the doors? More electric motors?... I thought EVs had to be light.

Saw a new GTR R35 the other day in HK with lambo dorr kit on it.

I was actually surprised it was a good thing for HK as there isn;t much romm to open the doors out into either traffic/the foot path/brick-rock walls etc..

Still, not sure I would get them...

+1

Roof line of a BMW 1 Series + Glass from a Mazda 3 Hatch + Horrendous rear bump steer from an Evo 1 = New Impreza

And to think the first generation WRX was awarded 'Car of the Decade' for the 1990's... Such a travesty... :(

Subaru lost the plot long ago, and don't seem to be improving :(

About the only one reasonable is the current STI

Love the current STI hatch :)

There's a coupe Impreza coming next year - will be WRX and STI variants AFAIK...

They havn't had a coupe for several years now, hopefully this new one will be good...

Toyota are in on the act as well with them...

On topic, gull wing doors IMO look crap (when open) and are impracticle !

They require alot more room around the vehicle to open up, as you can't just open them a little like conventional doors, they have to open right up to get in and out of the vehicle...

Granted once open they provide large area full access, except for head height and no more than what you would have with conventional doors, so IMO a total waste of time/effort...

Lambo doors are an exception and the way to go, they look ultra cool (when open) and provide access in tight situations as pointed out by Gman...

Not always, depends how far inboard the pivot point is. Have a look at the new Commodore wagon, and it's tailgate requires under 1 foot of space to open, which arguably is less than the space required to open and get out of a conventional door... Contrast that with dad's Forester where you need traffic control in a car park to open the tailgate...

But yeah, Lambo's are definitely the way to go! :D

I'd rather Subaru got rid of the rear bump steer in the new Impreza than worried about what doors it's got... :(

Fair point and good call, I didn't condsider that...

Looking again at those pics of those 2 classics, the Merc seems to be ok as you've mentioned, but the other one looks like it tilts from all the way out...

I disagree, sorry...

You've got to consider the time frame here - back then, this was IMO a very sporting and good looking design, I remember seeing these when new and would've loved one, but were way beyond my budget back then...

True they look tacky now, as do alot of vehicle types that looked awesome in their day...just have a look at some old Fezzas now like the Testa Rossa or the Delorian, fantastic back then, very awkward looking and almost all wrong now...

Sorry but the Marzal is amazing! But, it did start something with the honeycombed shapes, mind you i am glad the interior never took off, it was like some silvery foil crap like a space suit!

and the doors were all glass, if you were wearing a short skirt or scratching your crotch, everyone passing by would be able to see!

Agree about the Vortex, Ange . . . and the Subaru SVX (even today) is a great looking coupe. There's still a few of the around the streets, and they always grab my attention.

http://www.dragtimes.com/images/9100-1994-Subaru-SVX.jpg (http://www.dragtimes.com/Subaru-SVX-Timeslip-9100.html)

Subaru have always managed to step outside the square as far as design trends go. And this example, to me, is a real piece of automotive design excellence.
