hey all

iv been thinking about getting a project car for my 18th birthday in january, i have a maximum of about $5k but obviously cheaper is better. i quite like the ford escort mk1/mk2 and minis but can anyone suggest anymore and i want something that i can get parts for relatively easily and cheaply. thanks guys.

Thought you would have said a Cali? :p

+1 to a Gemini though. Mate worked on one for about a year and a half and fully worked it back to mint condition + more.

only thing that changed was the front end (grill, headlights and bumper)
and i think maybe the dash.

came with 253 and 308 small block chevy V8's
there was a straight 6 model, but why would you want that

hhmmmmm kinda mix of evrything really, i dont wanna do a full bare metal resto but i wouldnt mind doing bits of panel beating and painting and i wouldnt mind something with a bit of power, maybe a bike engine in a mini?? who knows haha and 5k to buy the car and then $$$+ after that on the car as my parents would be buying the car for me and they said 5k max

adam_92
13th November 2009, 04:40 PM
yeah i know, they said that they would give me 5k towards a car but as i had to buy my car a few months ago for work etc they said i could get something else instead but they said they wouldnt give me the 5k cash because they dont want me 2 waste it on crap

i'm going to cop a lot of flak for saying this but have you considered a 91-95 Civic Si? they're going for less than $5k - 1.6L vtec means you can keep up with modern small cars like Opel SRis, Mazda 3's etc. Honda engineering means it probably won't fall apart on you for a while.

when you have the money, drop in one of the JDM vtec engines (i believe quite a few are direct fit into a Civic EG chassis) and you'll have a real screamer :) think of how much you will learn doing an engine swap ;)

Just get whatever makes you happy the most.... No point restoring something your gonna fall out of love with and sell once its finished, 5k to get a base is a good start and will give you plenty of choices.

i want a van ideally, iv sort of narrowed it down to a mini clubman van or a mk1 esky panel van... now the hunt begins...

Escorts in reasonable condition are going for quite a bit of money these days, and those in less than reasonable nick are going to cost heaps to get sorted, (I am an Escort nut from waaaaaaaaaay back and wanted to build another one but went with the Triumph instead as got more performance with a lot less outlay)

Good luck with finding one, a panel van probably makes finding what you want even harder!

Costs vary, but you really need to know TR7's before heading out and buying one, different build years had different problems that you definately need to look out for!

That plus the fact spares/repair parts are getting a lot harder to find these days.
