Hey guys!

Two really quick questions, so i've got an original ps3 with the 60gb HD, and just got a notice the other day saying i only had 500mb left, so i cleared off some crap, and am back up to 8gb. The problem is, i've only got about 20-30gb of music, videos, photos and save data on it. And there's 55gb of space, so where has about 15gb of my space gone? Any ideas would be awesome, thanks!

This leads me to my next question, obviously with playtv coming up i'm going to need a bigger HD anyway, so can anyone recommend a good 250gb, maybe 500gb HD that's suitable for the ps3? I think i read they're 2.5" SATA notebook hard driveor something (clearly don't know too much about computers lol)
And if you read this Ash, i'm probably going to get it from you anyway, so any help is appreciated.
Thanks guys!

i may be wrong but i think they are specially formatted... So long as it;s formatted properly it should just be drop in... I think it needs to be done under a UNIX system (eg Linux) NOT WINDOWS, apparently the drive gets wiped when Windows puts the swap files in to read from it or something to that effect.

As for the 15GB's NFI... Hidden files maybe???

Cheers, just did some reading, and pretty much any 2.5" sata notebook drive works, as the ps3 just formats the harddrive when you first reboot it.

note sure about the 15gb of 'mystery' space

possibly install files from games?

and yer, as you;ve said, the ps3 formats the drive once you restart it.
jsut make sure you have the formware on a usb stick ;)

its a piece of piss, we've done heaps of em at work

well if it's anything like my pc HDD than it's probably down to labelling..

when have you have ever seen a hard drive that is exactly the same size as the label written on it?

eg. my 250gb hdd is actually 241.. i do feel ripped off.. but all hard drives are like that i think..

could be wrong :p

Yeah mine says 60 but is only 55, thing is there's another 15 or so missing on top of that. Couldn't all be update files maybe? I've cleared most of the photos, same with music, only have 1 demo game, then trophies and saves etc, then i've cleared the history and cookies from the browser. I'll put up some actual figures later for each section,
cheers for the replies!

its measured differently.

1 meg is 1024 kb
2 = 2048kb
4 = 4096kb
8 = 8192kb
16 = 16384
32 = 32768
64 = 65536
128 = 131072
256 = 262144
512 = 524288

ok Poita might be able to help. but see how the higher you go the more out of whack it becomes. its the same principles with a hard drive.

so thats why an 80 gig hard drive is only 74.5 and the higher you go the same happens. They measure the KB not the mb......ok Poita over to you, haha

all hard drives have a loss factor of gigabytes
this is taking up by file alocation tables (FAT) and information needed for the OS to recognise the drive.

my 1tb only reads 931gb (ripped!!)

also read here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gigabyte

Your hard drive is advertised as having a 60GB capacity, but your computer shows only 55.8GB. What gives? The discrepancy is the result of having two methods of measuring memory. Computers are binary, or "base two," mathematical systems, and in a binary world a kilobyte is 1024 bytes (2 to the 10th power). When computers were new, the geekerati referred to this as a "kilo." Noncomputer folks, however, understood kilo to mean thousand, and thought that 1000 bytes should equal a kilobyte. So, two different measurements of hard drive space were born. In 1998, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) weighed in, defining 1 "gigabyte" as 1 billion bytes. Hard disk manufacturers agree, marketing their products using the rounder decimal value instead of the binary system. So, your drive is labeled as decimal ("giga") and your PC reads binary (IEC's term, "gibi"). Either way, you're getting the same bunch of bytes

yes 500 is great.
xmas hols is coming up very soon, so we are all gonna need extra space. hopefully this can be sorted and delivered by then lol.
we will have to sort it out with ash, but hopefully this can happen within a few weeks.

Ok, so funnily enough today i found where my missing space had gone.
Was in game data utility, whatever that's for.
But:
GT5 prologue used 5gb.
HAWX used 5gb
and NFS:Shift used 3gb.

Just thought i'd post in case anyone else ever came up with a similar issue.

ps3 games are like pc games, you have to install files onto the PS3 for it to run.

and it seems like every coupla weeks they are releasing an update for the games.

so they are installing to the hard drive also.
