Personally, I am extremely keen on the new Golf GTI (or R32). Or maybe a Beama 1 Series.

I think it may happen in 2010 as I've made the conscious choice to cease all spendings on my SRi.

Not that I've had any problems with the Astra, but I wouldn't upgrade to the new model (if it came out here) or consider the VXR. It's time to move on :)

for me it will more than likely be either an audi or a wrx

but that will be quite a while... locked in with the astra for another 2 years and would have a hard time trying to sell the cali

A Bimmer of some sort (though maybe just maybe a Vectra C)

likely a - E34 540i (if I'm gonna pay V8 rego (about 1k in Qld) I may as well get more for my dollars (eg. not a 530i), or E36 325/328i.

I see the Chinese cars here in HK, and some close up over the border and not sure if they would be the one for me....

Especially after the JiangLing Landwind was the first ever car to get a ZERO score in Euro NCAP crash rating tests a few years back.

I think the reports at the time were along the lines of it was the only car ever to kill all passengers in a frontal collision test.

Was thinking VW GTI Pirelli early next year, but they're sold out...
The new Golf R looks good with 198kW (240 kW with remap) and AWD. Launched mid next year, let's see what happens, maybe Scirocco gets green light, too.
Another option could be BMW 123d hatch, amazing engine with potential to reach 180 kW and 490 Nm via a tuning box while sipping less fuel than my current oiler.
Secretly I'm still hoping Ford will bring the Focus RS down under, I'd sign for that right now :)

Another friend of mine took delivery of his new 135i just last weekend (BMW Brighton - Nepean Highway) jet black 6spd step (auto) with most option boxes ticked for 88k drive-away :)

You could get a basic spec manual for 76k drive-away ATM (until the end of Nov. BMW have 4k off any model) and after Jan 1st next year another 5% will come off the import tax levy...

Just take your time, save up and get a car like that brand new...

If you wait till it becomes 'affordable' after 3 or more years say, you'll be getting someone elses thrashed car and no warranty, which is very risky with this type of vehicle...

If you're self employed, I say, better to go Hire Purchase or Novated Lease depending on business use percentage & overall KM travelled.

If it's a standard Hire purchase, doesn't really matter who the lender is as long as they provide the lowest rates.

Novated Lease may be more beneficial if you do high KMs, also look at the option of contributing to the running cost to reduce FBT.

In my case, I'm better off with a standard hire purchase type arrangement (actually I've borrowed money from my home loan & claim a tax deduction on the interest). depreciation, interest & running cost are proportioned to business usage.

Agree about the MY09 WRX, it's a hard one to overlook or pass over in its price segment and IMO except for the tailgate the rest of its exterior looks good...

Hard choice between MPS3, WRX and Ralliart Lancer all at a very similar price and all having very good packages to offer...

Pete, about 5 weeks ago I checked out and got a quick test drive of the 370Z both the manual and the auto - Bloody awesome machine hands down without question !!!

The manual is super precise and the rev matching feature is a great thing, the auto acts and shifts like a DSG and shifts just as fast (no kidding) and it even blips and rev matches and is a 7spd.

The car goes and handles like stink ! and sounds very nice...

The interior is a class act, beatifully finished and highly featured and a great design IMHO...

There were 4 of them there at this dealer, grey, blue, red and yellow - my fav. colour for this car is the grey :) it looks hot in red and yellow too...not a fan of the blue one though...

I've seen white at another dealer and it looked ok too, but IMO the grey, yellow and red look the best for this car :)

Dealer I was at when checking them out had the yellow one on offer (manual) for 69k drive away and could've been 'pursuaded' to go lower...

They sold the red ex-demo auto for 68k.

I say if you really like them, go for it perfect upgrade from a Calibra :)

Ah I see, good on you mate enjoy it as much as you can before you have to hand the keys back :)

Nothing wrong with a HSV GTS (if you can handle the look of the latest one if that's the one you want) or Typhoon F6 both are great Aussie performance sedans, it's just the HSV marketing gimmicks and band wagon you've got to avoid...

Good luck with all the preps leading up to Feb. :)

370Z costs the dealers 62K before stamp duty, luxury car tax, CTP and Rego ;)

And at that they are still making a few grand in holdback and bonus from Factory!

So if your serious your now armed to crave them up for way better price :D Just don't mention you have inside knowledge ;)

Wraith,

how many cars have you checked out recently? lol..

I recall you mentioning Mazda 3 SP25, MPS3, Golf, Audi TT-S, 370z, BMW 123i, Passat, 135i, 370z, ... what else I am missing?

I didn't know you checked out the 370z. I'm keen on them, but won't test drive them just yet. If I liked it, I'm afraid I'd want one too much. I'll wait a couple of years until the taxable depreciated value of the GTI is lower, before I'll get a newer car.

i just secured a deal to rebuild the entire IT infrastructure of the Sandgate RSL, and along with that, a maintenance contract. so the audi aint gonna fit it.

looking at H3's (purely as being great for marketing) or Pathfinders. both will do the job. i just think H3's will pull more attention.

John, I'm either test driving or checking out new cars all the time, whether I'm interested in them or not, I'm always interested in trying them all out or at least having a close up look at them and I've purchased quite a few of them along the way ;)

The new 370Z is an awesome car, BUT it'll be one of those cars you either like or don't like in terms of looks, I don't think there's any middle ground on that part with these...

As already mentioned, the interior is superb, both in terms of design and function and the quality is pretty good too !

The performance is very, very sharp, would impress most people and that's with either manual or auto !

If your really keen - go for it this car will not dissapoint, that's for sure...if your going to wait a while, there should be some S/H going down the track and that should save you some $$$ as well :)

Hahahaha LOL that's what it's all about :)

Whatever floats your boat, that's what to go for, afterall except for the lower end of the market, new cars are so expensive these days you definitely want to make sure you've made the right choice on all things involved in the decision process, before shelling out all that dosh...

The next car that I want is an Alfa 159. Absolutely stunning to look at!

I had a 147 previous to my Veccy Cdxi and just loved it but it was too small and didn't have enough power.

Not looking to change anytime soon, still having lots fun with the Vectra and have a few little mods that I have planned for the Vectra.

Looking at either a 240Z or 260Z and doing an engine conversion or (a bit similar to Aussie) a Porsche, but an older one for me.

A replica 1973 era 911 RS...Saw one on the one of the Australian Porsche Club websites...Beautiful... :)

To be boring - i'm looking at a small diesel. Possibly a Cruze.

One in white, lowered with black racing wheels, tinted, mild diesel performance mods with a chrome silver and chrome green racing stripe.

Weird I know but i've always been a bit left field.....

Drove an H3. and as big and attention seeking as they are... they are horrible to drive.

Looked at the pathfinder, love the front, interior is reasonable, but the back just looks awkward.

while i was looking at the pathfinder, i had a look at the new X-Trail. and i have to say, i was rather impressed.

this was last saturday.. i specifically wanted to test a 6-spd manual diesel, which they didnt have available, but on friday they called me to say one was available to drive.

clutch is rather springy, and takes some getting used to, but other than that, drove very nicely, seats are soooo comfy (leather) i'd put them up there with my audi's seats. if i order one it will be a MY10 delivery, which includes a reverse camera and satnav that you dont get on the '09's.

starting price was $42,990, plus on roads, etc. with all the options i put on totalled 52k drive away. then with some haggling, got it down to 45k drive away, and i can probably still squeeze them a bit when i make a final offer.

good deal?

oh, and it uses a renault sourced common rail 2.0 turbo diesel, so some greenbox loving can help its power figures :D
