When a contractor's jackhammer smashed through major fibre-optic and copper Telstra cables, businesses in the Sydney CBD's north-west quarter faced a potential telecommunications disaster.

But with practiced speed, efficiency and expertise, Telstra swung into action undertaking a massive and daunting repair job to ensure affected businesses spent not one minute longer than necessary without phones or internet.

There needs to be some changes made to the Dial Before You Dig Service.

It's advertised as a free service, but in the fine print it says "a reasonable charge" may have to be paid in order to receive the cable plans.

You guessed it, Telstra charges and arm and a leg for these plans, then whinges and sues you when you rip up their network.

I used the service a few years ago, within 12 hours of logging the request, I received 4 post tubes in the mail, from Origin, Ergon, the Council and Telstra. Used it earlier this year, got the same, but a small letter from Telstra asking for $100 before they send plans.
