" Last year, we reported that Toyota (http://www.topgear.com/uk/tags/Toyota) and Subaru (http://www.topgear.com/uk/tags/Subaru) were collaborating to develop a lightweight, rear-wheel-drive coupe (http://www.topgear.com/uk/car-news/Toyota-Subaru). We were excited.

And now our excitement has reached the heady level of In A Bit of A Tizz, because here it is: the Toyota FT-86, set to debut at the Tokyo motor show (http://www.topgear.com/uk/tags/Tokyo-Motor-Show-2009) later this month.

The FT-86 is labelled a concept, but is expected to reach the road in 2011 alongside a Subaru-badged version.

It's powered by Subaru's 2.0-litre boxer engine, which puts out 146bhp in current production form but should develop slightly more in future iterations.

As we're well aware, the four-pot can be turbocharged to produce monstrous power outputs, but that would also put the price up: Toyota and Subaru are aiming to keep the cost as low as possible to attract younger drivers to the brand. The coupes should weigh in well under £20,000 when they go on sale in the UK.

The FT-86 has a 2+2 seating configuration and measures 416cm in length, just a fraction longer than the Audi TT (http://www.topgear.com/uk/audi/tt-coupe) and around 18cm shorter than the Lotus Evora (http://cupholder.blogs.topgear.com/2009/08/26/lotus-evora/).

We'll find out much more about the FT-86 - and, perhaps, its Subaru counterpart - in Tokyo in a couple of weeks' time. "

I LOVE IT!:D ...and she`s rear wheel drive too!

Just noticed myself! Would be a pain to replace!! I have a feeling its part of the windscreen (which would make it easier)..like the sides curve a bit and they have black out to make it look like an A-Pillar.

lollollol, same power as a stock veccy b 2.2, and i doubt it would be much lighter... and prob have more tranny losses too...

but RWD :p and probs get a better torque delivery and VVT and probs better rev range and better weight distrubution :p

itll never be just 146bhp but... 146kw maybe.. lol its just too small for a car of that "calibre"

That's HOT !!!

You can actually see its origins from the defunct FT-HS concept...what a shame Toyota pulled the pin on that one, although if this vehicle makes it to production and looks like that, it'll be hit IMO :)

I also like the new Honda CRZ hybrid, which will be on sale in Japan by Feb. next year and maybe landing in Aust. showrooms later in 2010...lots of new choices coming over the next 6-18 months :)

"Just yesterday we showed you the FT-86 concept (http://www.topgear.com/uk/car-news/toyota-ft-86-2009-10-06), Toyota (http://www.topgear.com/uk/tags/Toyota)'s shiny new rear-wheel-drive coupe developed in conjuction with Subaru (http://www.topgear.com/uk/tags/Subaru), and today Polyphony has released a two-minute video of the FT-86 thrashing around the world of Gran Turismo 5 (http://www.topgear.com/uk/tags/gran-turismo-5).

The video confirms that the 2+2 coupe (http://www.topgear.com/uk/photos/toyota-ft-86) will be powered by Subaru's C-4S boxer four engine, and shows the FT-86 doing battle around Tsukuba with its spiritual predecessor, the original Toyota AE86 Corolla.http://www.topgear.com/uk/car-news/toyota-ft-86-gt5-2009-10-06"

The FT-86 will be in Grand Tourismo 5 guys!!!!!!!!!:D

Yeah I know, Toyota is prob trying to cash in on the cred the numbers 86 have.

Still, would be interesting to see one of these in white with a black bonnet - maybe some of our Photochoppers can do it ;)

I thought the Subaru version would be released first (2010) and the Toyota version sometime in 2011.

I think Hyundai may beat them to the market in Australia with the genesis coupe. 3.8V6 or 2L turbo.

I posted up a comparo of it against the new MPS3 in the MPS3 thread - the Hyundai is a bit of a beast in terms of performance, that's for sure...

nice looking car, love it
but....will Subaru sell it too? i mean, like early stage toyota and lexus, either of them would make a more powerful version(may be turbocharged AWD?)

gmonkey
9th October 2009, 08:35 PM
i just cant see a toyota using a boxer engine... im imagining if anything if they wont have a boxer then maybe the toyota versions powerful version will be the v6 from the aurion maybe? maybe a TRD spec with a supercharger and will be RWD for the v6 norm and maybe 4wd for the supercharger one.. possibly.... subaru will use their boxer engine and will more than likely have to have a STi version..

Vectracious
10th October 2009, 07:53 AM
Toyota owns a chunk of Fuji Heavy Industries, which in turn owns Subaru. So really, the boxer engine is an engine that Toyota partly owns and develops. It's cheaper and easier for them to leave the same engine in the car and re-brand it. Doubt anyone would care either if a Toyota had a boxer engine in it rather than an inline 4.

Changing topic...but I read BMW is developing inline 3 - 1.5L Turbo engines capable of 150KW:eek: for the new series below the 1 series..cant recall what the name is. Apparently, the engineers are facing some challenge with harmonics!

anyways - think turbo boxer would be awesome but inline 4 N/A is a better option...add VVTIL to it and she`s be sweet:D
