I have been on optusnet cable for about 10 years now. No recent dropouts or issues.

My Auntie recently changed from Telstra to DODO, and she regretted it so much she cancelled and went to TPG instead.

Seriously, I never realized cable was so much faster then DSL (Despite what the advertising says).

Because I am on an old plan that they cannot change unless I ok it, the price, bandwidth and speed is excellent, but modern plans suck.

Cheers

E.g. Open up a command prompt and type in tracert opelaus.com

When you get the reply and the trace is complete, right click in the window and click mark, then drag the cursor over the text, then hit enter. Start a new post then use Ctrl V to paste.

I am with TPG ADSL2+.

Every time when I can not access the OpelAus on both my PC and Mac, I use my PSP to access OpelAus, on PSP everything is OK.WHY?

PC, Mac and PSP share the same wireless AP.

On PC, I use IE7.
On Mac, I use both Safari and Opera.
On PSP, I use Opera(Java).

Bingo. You can all thank Toby - the problem is due to (most likely) TPG's DNS servers. By default your computer will be sending DNS requests to your modem, which passes them to the default ISP's DNS servers - if they lookup by domain name isn't successful like above, it will fail. If you know the IP address of the location where you want to go - it will work - like shown above.

Kudrow

There are several ways around DNS problems - some ISP's own internal DNS servers are absolute rubbish for various reasons - sometimes because they are offline, or don't update quick enough.

The main way around this is to use someone elses DNS servers - another ISPs for instance - you will usually find this will improve your overall internet experience. I've never been with TPG, but I know from past experience that BigPond's DNS servers are rubbish - they might of fixed them now - its been several years.

I have found Westnet's and Internodes to be relatively good.

Not too sure there. Naturally I'm not going to blame the server, I'd blame someone else (lol) but I really can't see it being a problem. It could be that TPG's DNS servers are also just slow to update their various changes.

There is a way to fix it, and that is to add the opelaus.com IP to your hosts file on your computers, that way it will look at the hosts file before even checking with DNS servers.

For those of you who want to modify their hosts file, heres how:

If you are unsure or not confident about doing this - then DON'T do it. I won' take responsiblity for you doing it wrong.

For XP/Vista/7 users:
Go to C:\Windows\System\System32\Drivers\etc
Find the file called "hosts" and open with notepad
At the bottom, add 112.140.177.97 and opelaus.com (you can either just put a space between the IP and the hostname, or tab it across to line up with others alreayd in there (like localhost))
Save and close the file
Close your browsers and reopen
The result should look like this:

# Copyright (c) 1993-2006 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost
