Did anyone see the doco "James may goes to space" on discovery? The USAF is using Monaro's as U2 Chase cars to help it land.

Guys, do you seriously believe that the US&A will IMPORT cars from Australia when their car industry is in intensive care, with no pulse and Obama throwing gazillions at it to make it tick again?! Are you kidding me? Besides, I read this story ages ago, in much rosier times for the Elizabeth plant, nothing happened since...

1. why is it being reported on now by several sources?

2. What car is currently being produced by any of the big 3 over there that would make a suitable replacement? (off the top of my head, can only think of the 300C as fitting the bill ie large V8 RWD sedan)

Yes this story first came about back in March... however it is the recent comments from GM CEO Fritz Henderson that suggest it is closer to occuring...

It's official, Holden have developed a car which will be available for ordering in 2010 for North America. It's not the Commodore however that has been developed but a Caprice, which will be badged as a Chevrolet Caprice. LAPD will have a Pontiac G8 for a three month trial as of next week, to test the technology that will be offered in the Caprice.

I know I would!

I think it's because of the price of these which make them really attractive to the US police departments. Also because it's a bigger car then the Charger as well..

A Caprice on ceptors just looks wrong!! The VE G8 cop car looked better, but as long as they do the job then doesn't matter!!

Are they just getting the V6 engine? Cause the photo only has twin single tips? My bosses wife's V8 Caprice has the twin duel tips like on the SS/SS-V

EDIT::: just read, the rear wheel drive sedan will be available as a V6 with Spark Ignition Direct Injection or as a V8 with Active Fuel Management, both E85 capable

Ford - looks like ass; they're trying to move away from them aren't they?

Charger - Very American, looks good. Don't know what they think of the handling and also perhaps they want to keep them for Sheriff and unmarked cars.

Carbon - Never heard of the company, styling's a bit off (don't know if they'd want a heap of cop cars looking like that). Don't know if they'll go for the "integrated" lightbar either

Impala - looks a lot like a lot of Domestic American commoners, (which in turn these days look like Honda Ripoffs).

If I know yank cops, they're quite conservative. I don't see them going for the Carbon at all, and probably not for the Impala either. If they're trying to get away from the Ford, then it's probably down to the Charger or the Commodore. Here's hoping Holden gets the gig.

yeah but I'm talking about this particular tender

Yeah, but the Charger is too expensive and the impala is two small (look at the rear doors, you try squeezing in a 150kg man in those doors, and he'll be quite upset).

I see why the Commodore is a good choice, it's tried and tested, cheap, and it's backed by GM.

I've already heard reports that the US police forces that have seen the car are pretty keen on it. Fingers crossed!

Possible downside? If GM gets smart, they'll start production of the Zeta line as the next Lumina.... in Canada.

They wont as it will impact their fleet economy figures.
