Astray recently sent me a pm asking me what I thought he could get in a notebook around the $1000 range, particularly a sony vaio. In my replied I said that I thought Vaios would be poor value for money etc etc.

So I thought I'd start a thread that people can contribute to with opinions, ebay auctions etc.

What you need to look for is essentially a 2ndHand or new Notebook for $1000. Astray also seems to want

DVD Burner (but not essential)
Lots of RAM (4GB)
Decent Processor (Core2 or better I'm guessing)

Here's some things I've found on the Bay

Asus;

personally

for notebooks i've found www.graysonline.com.au (http://www.graysonline.com.au)
to be the place to look
specially the QA failed ones,
some just have scratches and have huge price mark downs

Ummm ok Im not going to go through each of those links, haha

you should be able to egt something decent for the $1000 and brand new.

JB is probably the best bet and you can always get a bit more out of them.

Yeah I got a F3SV. The best part is is that at least if it fails (which the 8600 chipset has) the service center is right here in Brisbane. Sometimes they take more then 1 go to fix it, but the key to knowing when it's all good is when your computer is returned to you filled with black ants.

I got a secondhand IBM T43p for $450 from my computer guy. 15" screen, bluetooth, wi-fi, fingerprint reader, dvd burner, 2gig ram, 80 gig hd. Im sure that if i wanted to, i could spec it up at some stage. It does everything i need it to for now.

the one i picked up was immaculate! not a scratch or dead pixel. For a 3 year old laptop with the original battery, it lasts over 2 and a half hours before needs charging. (the T43p has the larger battery)

yep they are very good laptops indeed, and can be roughed up and still work fine for years. Ive worked with stacks over the years and found them to be as you all mention very durable.

In my experience, second hand laptops are a big nono, unless you know exactly what's been done to it in it's life.

A prime example is, you can hide damage to a laptop better to that of a desktop, but at the same time, laptops are more prone to damage* due to it being "portable". E.g. dropped, knocked, jarred, left on in a bag and cooked or liquid ingression.

*To this date I am using my 9th laptop since 2005. I've had a Compaq M2218, another Compaq (I think V62xx something), a Toshiba M200 or similar, another Toshiba (A300 or P300), another Toshiba (U400) again, another Toshiba again (U400), an ASUS, a HP Mini and I'm currently using a HP.

HP, Toshiba and IBM are very well built and it does take a bit to destroy them. Pete's Toshiba took a fall about 1M off a bench to a concrete floor and still works.

Wreck them. Plus, I rent them so it works out easier on the pocket when I need to replace them.

I work in a Service Center & we do many Laptops, Toshiba warranties by the dozen..

I'm a BIG fan of IBM's personally... I have 3 lappy's atm, 2x X40's, 1x X31 & my wifes T42 + 2 IBM PC's, a Z PRO server (dual 2.8GHz HT proc & 4GB ram) & a desktop internet/email box.

I can get 2nd handers if anyone wants to PM me... With or without windows/ubuntu whatever...

Most others may have the features but are built like a plastic milk carton... Most IBM's have a Titanium top cover... If not it's like 4mm thick plastic...

Actually should be 'IBM/Lenovo'

but i got it from harvey norman for $1774.
$1300 would have been good, but i did read somewhere in the paperwork that the warranty isnt valid if the unit is bought from an auction... dunno if that applies to ebay auctions too.

thankyou to everyone for your suggestions.
bigger thankyou to jerram , i truly appreciate it mate. thankyou again.
