Hi computer experts :p

What graphics card should I get?

My computer supports PCI-E x16. I am upgrading the processor to a Dual core 2.8Ghz, my ram is 4x 1GB DDR2-800 and I have upgraded HDD to 2x SATA 500GB and I will be running RAID 0

The problem I had when I upgraded the graphics card last time (I used a 8500 GT) was that it only just fit in

Depends what your after. Is it for gaming? Or general use. Multimedia? etc. What resolution is your screen? How much are you willing to spend..
edit. Maybe measure the inside of your case and see the dimensions you've got to play with. Most websites list dimensions of cards.

MAD-16V

Id buy a bigger case!

GTX 260 Core 216 - Retails around $250 $ 350 , Prolly get one for just shy of $200 cost.

Problem is it's about 11 inches long ( That's what she said ) lol.

But yeah serious muscle in that card for low dollars and would crush all above mentioned cards quite comfortably.

your 2.8ghz processor sort of limits you a bit ( unless you plan to overclock it ) The 9800gt would be a great card if you are limited for space and dont intend to overclock.

Edit : just read your reply . the 9800gtx is a nice card but it is the same physical size as the GTX 200 series of cards.

Gfx cards are not getting smaller , They're getting bigger :)
Almost all of the "Consumer" based gfx cards available today are over 10 inches in length ,

and require at least 2 x 6 pin pcie power connectors ,

This is also something you will have to consider , the power supply in your pc may not be enough to run a modern card.

Another question. Should I still get the 2.8Ghz dual core or the Q6600 Quad core? My brother tells me the quad core is better for general use but the dual core will be faster for gaming. Is this right?

ROCCO
22nd July 2009, 03:18 PM
It depends on what your using it for. I have a dual core 3.0ghz and I game and use virtual pcs and its fine. There isn't anything that uses the dual or the quad core yet. Your kinda wasting for money going for a quad...unless its cheaper than the Dual core.
AFAIK windows seven will use the extra cores but really thats the only prog out there at the moment that uses it....save your money and buy a better GPU instead

MAD-16V

Why do you keep saying that nothing uses multicore?
Almost all modern games utilize at least 2 cores , usually when talking about dual vs quad for gaming , Dual has the advantage of overclocking a bit higher hence better speeds.

Q6600 is a nice chip , I would recommend it for general use.

Maybe you should look at more recent sites?

Crysis / GTAIV / Call of duty / oblivion / fallout 3 / street fighter 4 / resident evil 5 .

I could go on ..

All of these games support dual core

GTAIV will even utilize all 4 cores on a quad processor.

Even old games like quake 3 and quake 4 will use dual core if you tell it to.

Get factual evidence that games or applications do not support dual or quad core processing before commenting again.

EDIT : In fact Assasins creed will only run on a dual core and nothing less , It is a requirement.

Yes if you tell it too....or if the company release a patch enabling the support for dual or quad. Even still you need either Vista or Windows 7 to fully use it. XP doesn't support it its too old. For an every day user that obivously isn't as L33T as you they won't know how to edit there .exe to make it work with dual core or quad cores.

Not that simple. It's an ASUS IPIBL-LA (Berkely) which is an OEM board that ASUS does not support. Only HP supports this board and they have no intentions of updating the BIOS beyond the current update.

they are a bit pricey, and hopefully one day soon they will replace conventional platter HDD's. would think they will be more stable due to having no moving parts. i've seen HDD's fail within months, but never seen a flash drive fail. i've got a 32mb lying around somewhere that still works. its 6 years old.

How about 2 x 2Tb drives striping in Raid 0 which is why I bought the 2nd drive... :)

that makes more sense.

to just run raid 0 with no backup drives is madness. helps with speed yes, but if you have nothing backing up those drives it just totally defeats the purpose of raid.

That depends on why you want to run RAID. I use it for speed as I play a lot of games. I also have a 1TB portable drive for back up. If your referring to drive stability today's modern hardware is quite good.

it was a breeze to install using 4 of those plastic anchors that self tap into gyp-rock. Since each of them is rated 10kg and the monitor weights about 5kg, there's not much chance it will fall off :)

Go ahead, do it, these screens are made to be installed on the wall. The bloody leg that came with it was wobbly, too low and always managed to annoy me, but now that's all sorted.

Nah, I edit a lot of video, record audio and I do alot of design so the screens do help with different things like having heaps of windows open at the same time without having to be under another window or having one screen with just main video playback etc.

I use the same CPU, motherboard, RAM and CPU cooler. However, since got the rig together I upgraded graphics to 7950 and the HDDs to a pair of 256GB SSDs. There's not much this beast can't do :-) Not bad for a 3 years old rig.
Screens wise I got a 27" Dell IPS 2560X1600 and a 24" Acer 1080p.

This. The SSD probably has to be the single biggest speed improvement in computing in the last six or seven years, upon one of the biggest bottlenecks in the average system. Worth every cent. Shadow110, think of it as the equivalent of fitting the M-Tech shifter and Whiteline rear sway bar to your SRi. That's how good SSDs are.

Or dont buy a mac, get a PC and enjoy all the unrestricted feels of how a computer should be :D

may as well join in, Specs as follows:

- Intel i7 3770k quad core with HT technology (currently running overclocked at a very stable 4.2ghz)
- Antec Khuler h2o Closed loop water system with 2x coolermaster *insert fancy blade design name here* in a pull push configuration drawing air from outside the case rather than in. (ran a burn test at 4.2ghz for 2hrs straight at 100% cpu usage and highest temp was recorded at 65 Degrees C on core #3)

- 16gb Corsair something performance ram 1600hz clock speed.
- asus something fancy motherboard name
- 128gb ocz agility 3 SSD for OS, Adobe suite and League of legends :cornut:
- 6tb of various other SATA drives ive collected during upgrades over the years. (most of them being barracudas)
- Nvidia GTX 760 for them 1132cuda cores (adobe users you know what im talking about ;) )
- Antec 950w Power supply
- Logitec G19 keyboard.
- Razer Mamba gaming mouse (never use it wirelessly though)
- Razer Nostramo (mainly for games however when im working with the adobe suite the hotkeys are macro'd to make the workflow easier)
- el cheapo DVD playo Drivo

Pretty sure thats it from memory. at work currently. will screen cap from CPU-z when im home if anyone cares.

Gets a windows score of 7.6 in windows 7. the 7.6 believe it or not comes from the SSD, everything else is 7.9 :)

Old thread but I'll add my rig in because I can.

Intel Core i5 2500K overclocked at 4.6GHz cooled by a Corsair H80.
ASRock Z68 Extreme4 Gen3 mother board.
16GB of Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600MHz RAM
1x Samsung 840EVO 250GB SSD for OS and programs, 1x Samsung 840EVO 500GB SSD for games, 1x Seagate 2TB 7200rpm HDD for storage.
Asus ROG GTX580 Matrix Platinum graphics card
Asus Xonar Essence STX sound card
Cosair AX1200 power supply
Samsung BluRay drive

All of this is neatly placed into a Cosair Obsidian 600D case with a 200mm front intake fan, 200mm top exhaust fan plus the H80 is mounted with 2 120mm fans exhausting in a push pull fashion out the back.

Connected to this is a Max Nighthawk X7 mechanical keyboard with Cherry MX Blue switches and O-ring mod, Steel Series Sensei mouse, Razer Nostromo pad (have used one for gaming since the Belkin N52), Audio Technica ATH-AD900 headphones, Audio Technica AT202USB microphone and two Asus VS24H monitors.

I built this thing to play BF3 and it has served its purpose well into BF4. I play on a 24" 1080p monitor so i get between 50 and 70FPS in BF4 with everything on high. It started out with a single Crucial M4 128GB SSD, then I switched to two Samsung 840EVO 250GB SSDs before recently throwing one of those into my notebook and buying the 500GB SSD for this. The keyboard is recent also as now that I'm studying software development I do a whole lot more typing and the small Logitech keyboard I had wasn't up to the task. For games I use the Nostromo and never needed a decent keyboard before. Aside from that it's all as I originally built it, aside from a few cable management sessions and adding the sound card in their at some point when I got the AD900 headphones.

I want to upgrade the graphics card soon as I think that's the weakest link and if I replaced the CPU I'd be up for a new motherboard also. I've done some testing with the CPU running stock and running overclocked and it didn't make a massive improvement to FPS so I think it can last until we see what X99 and Broadwell are all about. I think two 770's in SLI would be sweet but I'll wait for GTX800 cards to show up to see what they're like. I'm also toying with the idea of a Mini-ITX build in a Corsair 250D or Micro-ATX build in a Fractal ARC Mini R2 case if I go the new CPU and MoBo route.

I would love to play games a lot more than I do.
When I do it's a mixture of F1 2015, Assetto Corsa, RaceRoom, with a bit of Forza 6 on the Xbox One.
When not driving GTA V, And i'm actually playing COD from No1 right thru to the newer ones.
Can't stand playing online. Just don't play enough of either game & just get slaughted lol

Will update this when I get home as I'll probably get the specs wrong.

So ditched the laptop and have moved onto a desktop

i7 4770 3.4ghz
16gb ram (upgrading to 32gb)
GT630 (soon to be replaced with a GTX760ti)
Samsung EVO850 500gb boot drive.
Seagate 2tb data drive.
About 12tb of external storage.
All in a shitty case atm, possibly will swap it over to my Cooler Master Cosmo S case.

Once the video card is in I'll be looking at going to a three monitor setup of either 24" or 27".

I don't even play games on it.......

Computers here got on/off button, rest of the specs no idea at all. Renew them once in a while. One of them is an awesome machine, very old, running on xp. The last one i got is a month old so i guess some of the latest specs. Other than that, got heaps of 2 and 3 tb drives full of data.
