Not the case for me my friend - maybe others...

I've always been, always will be and always proclaimed here to be a V8 man ;)

Here’s one for the Chrysler boys, or anyone interested in superchargers!

See our progress on Daniels 426 cube, Whipple Supercharged SRT8 as it gets the Motec system fitted and tuned. See it on the road at the Chryslers on the Murray car show.

Matt from Yella Terra talks us through the 300C Supercharger kit and gives a run down on the Whipple supercharger. Matt then takes a blown 300C out on the road to give us a feel for what its all about.

Still not an Opel episode but interesting anyway!

HPF are back this week with an episode that will definitely appeal to the Ford fans, a feature on upgrading the new FG Falcon both in turbo and V8 forms.

First up we cover a custom dyno tune on an FG XR6 Turbo, then take it out on the street to see have it drives once the true power has been unleashed.

Next we tackle a very different beast, an FPV Super Pursuit, powered by the 5.4l quad cam v8. To this machine we fit a full exhaust system and Yella Terra supercharger kit. See up close the difference between the factory exhaust system and the aftermarket unit, and inside the supercharger and intercooler kit. We then take it out on the road to see how it compares to the turbo 6 Falcon.

See it now streamed from our website at www.ozgarage.com.au (http://www.ozgarage.com.au/season1-video/episode-8-now-online-the-fg-episode?utm_source=opelaus&utm_medium=forum&utm_campaign=ep8).

For those Holden fans with seared eye balls from Episode 8 we have some welcomed relief with coverage of HPF at the LS1 Drag Nationals.

Follow the build of Tims VY Ute as we put together a package for his car to better his 9.8 second time slip. In go the tubs and a 402 cube iron blocked motor and out it goes to the track. We’ll keep track of Tims day as well as our old friend Garry Pope driving his boosted Coupe 4, and Robs Calais for the first time at the track since the head and cam upgrade went in.

We also manage to squeeze in some tech content with Heathcote Raceways very own Russell as he takes us around one of his jet cars explaining how it all works.

98 Octane, Ethanol, E10.... all words which we are hearing more and more both in the news and on TV and also by customers wanting the best performance out of their car.

With this we have decided to answer the questions with knowledge by testing a variety of different fuels back to back on the dyno. The results are definitely interesting and may change both the performance car industry and even the environment in the future.

See the results of testing 91 Octane Unleaded, 98 Octane Unleaded, E10 Ethanol Blend, E85 Ethanol Blend and a 120 Octane dedicated race fuel.

To give some relief from the dyno action we also head down to the Latrobe Valley Street Machine Show with a few cars and get up close and personal with one of the organisers.

was interesting to see the different outputs from each fuel

the 98 looks like someone peed in there :p

J
16th September 2009, 03:24 PM
So, to summarise the results...

The mildly modded NA (?) VE V8 puts out about 5% more power when using E85 instead of 91 octane, albeit also using at least 25% more fuel, and increasing the rate of corrosion on rubber components along the fuel line. The way I see it, the 5% improvement is based on having the ability to adjust the ignition timing etc.

My question is: will the improvement for an NA engine that does not have its ECU settings fiddled with, be next to negligible then?

(I ask this because, whilst most people can change the type of fuel they put in, they are unlikely to also be able to change the ECU mapping. I just want a rough idea as to the "real world" improvement there is from going 91 octane to E85. Thanks!)

In addition: are our Opels OK to run ethanol-blended fuel?

DO NOT RUN E85 IN A CAR THAT ISN"T SPECIFICALLY TUNED FOR IT!!!!!!

So just to repeat that, you can't run E85 in a car that isn't tuned to run it... ;)

Its not perfectly explained in the video but they do sort of mention it. As they do explain very well too, E85 requires about 20% to 30% more fueling to run properly and then the timing needs to be adjusted also to take advantage of the extra octane/oxygenation available. Running a stock ECU map on E85 can result is serious engine damage!!!!!

For the Astra's the timing is no issue as the ECU automatically gives it as much as it can take based on load etc and pulls it back using the knock sensor if it hears anything untoward..

BUT the fueling need to be adjusted to run E85...Don't run it if you haven't had the car tuned for it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Would have loved to have seen a forced induction car running E85, like the Skyline before the clutch let go. I know alot of the forced induction Improved Production racers are switching to E85 due to the power gains available for a cheap fuel...

As for the Astra being able to run E10 fuels like the old Shell Racing fuel they had which had 10% ethanol it is listed as OK. Not 100% on E85 but I would assume if its good for E10 it might be OK for E85....

Shay
16th September 2009, 04:02 PM
think glenn said it all pretty well...
but as they showed e10 is basically 95 octane (which we can buy over here in WA, assuming you can over there too, tho they didnt test it) so why not use 98 which gave more power again and doesnt risk your rubber pipes at all...

also even the e10 on a stock map would lean out more than regular fuel, they mentioned that in the show, and he could adjust fuel too, something majority of us dont have the luxury of doin...

and if i can get 2% AT THE WHEELS power increase from 98 RON, id be very happy.

E10 is a very viable option for a road car without a specific tune. Its 4c a litre cheaper than 91 which is up to 12c cheaper than 98. You will very likely see an increase in performance from using e10 rather than 98.

Firstly, if it leans the mixture out a little bit this should help performance in most road cars as they are typically tuned rich from the factory. The ethanol also has a cooling effect which will also help performance, and may even counter effect the leaning of the mixture.

The downside is you will use a little more fuel, this will vary from vehicle to vehicle. On my standard VN V6 daily driver I only use E10 and I get around 550kms a tank which is around 20kms less than i would get on 91.

After 20,000km+ I have not had a single problem with my fuel system.

Holden will be releasing flexfuel (E85) Commodores next year.

E10 fuel has little/no effect on fuel system components in modern cars.

This weeks episode of Oz Garage represents the future…

Our obsession is to create an Australian car show like no other, given a real budget and production team this is just a taste of what Oz Garage could be.

Featuring:
- Rob and Paul battle out the age old debate, petrol vs diesel.
- Tech tips with Rob's dad.
- A tribute to our friend Lyle Lemon.
- The Pioneers of Speed with Norm Hardinge.

See it now streamed from our website at www.ozgarage.com.au (http://www.ozgarage.com.au/?p=178&utm_source=opelaus&utm_medium=forum&utm_campaign=ep11).

Would you believe we've actually run them both down the quarter? I believe the Territory ran a high 13, the Hilux did a 16.9

This is the second part of the two episodes displaying what OzGarage could be with a real budget and production team.

Introducing the 'Lolux Project' with help from the boys at DW Customs, this is a car that will redefine what the Horsepower Factory are capable of.

We also check out the new TRD Hilux to see how the factory offering compares with our heavily modified Hilux.

Following on from last weeks introduction to the Lolux project, this we we fast forward to current day and see the car in the final stages of paint. Rob also gives viewers a rundown on how far the mechanicals of the Lolux have come including the twin turbo V6 engine and massive brakes.

As a break from the Holden and Ford based episodes we cover an upgrade on a MY08 Subaru Impreza STi. See the boys fit forged pistons and an upgraded turbo to really release the potential of the all wheel drive beast.

This is also the finale episode of the first season of Oz Garage. The team at Oz Garage / HPF would like to thank you for your support and hope you enjoyed the show. We are currently working on a bigger and better Season 2 so stay tuned for more information on the expected release date.
