Operation Tabella - Irreversible number plate screws
Operation Tabella is a joint initiative by the NSW Police Force and the NSW Attorney-General's Department to combat number plate theft in the South-West metropolitan area of Sydney.

Over several days in July and August (see times and venues below), police from 14 Local Area Commands will establish "special fitting stations" at railway stations, shopping centres and other public venues to provide "one-way" or irreversible number plate screws to drivers, free of charge.

Funded by the Attorney-General's Department, the operation is being supported by a range of community-minded organisations including the NRMA, TAFE, Railcorp, PCYCs, local councils, Beaurepaires, Bunnings, Westfield and Coles.

The theft of number plates is a major concern for authorities.

Latest figures suggest licence plate thefts account for 12% of items stolen from motor vehicles.

The stolen plates are often used in service station drive-offs, robberies and road toll fraud.

The fitting stations will have access to enough screws to fit 12,000 motor vehicles over the five designated public fitting days.

The screws will be available free beyond those dates until Wednesday 30 September.

Motorists should contact their local police station or keep an eye out for information about additional smaller, localised fitting sessions.

The fitting process takes just moments and drivers are urged to fill out a copy of the indemnity form to present to fitting station staff.

The screws can only be removed by a special tool provided to police in the 14 South-Western Sydney Local Area Commands.

Anyone who witnesses the theft of number plates should report the matter to their local police or contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

It's called a diamond tipped drill bit ;)

I've got a fair few sets from "Operation Platesafe" that the Vic police do.

Depending on the type, instead of the screwdriver mark in the head being buried on both sides, the side that holds the screw driver in when taking these out has been angled so the screw driver has nothing to bite on. Good idea i think, except when you want to take your own plates off :D

My only worry is what they do with the screwdriver after realising they can't use it to remove your plates...

Old news...as Rori said

They did the same thing here in Vic about 2 years ago, hitting all the major train station carparks with this shceme :)

Hasn't happened to me, but my Bro has had his plates nicked twice - main thing the thieves do is use them for 'fill up and run' at servos more than anything else - bloody d#*kheads

remove the bumper bars and buy new ones

and send your old turbo bars to me, I'll make use of them

might get some of these if I personalise one of the cars, but atm on normal plates even if they got stolen I could prove pretty easily it wasnt me... (how many red calibras or opelised astras are around...)

no worries, come round anytime to pick them up, and for a beer..

good question. i know its a 'special tool', but where do you get them from?

they arent that hard to remove..

i screwed one (didnt full tightened tho) and managed to screw it out, it's very hard to get out tho and it wasnt fully tightened..

you could get them off, very very slowly, but if you have the patience i suppose you could get them.. any thief would just say **** it and move on to the next car that doesnt have them..

There are a few types. The ones with the tool has 2 dots in it i think that the tool goes into.

Those are security screws and there are many types. The ones at Bunnings etc are a one way screw and the only way to get them off is angle grinder or weld something to them.
