Any Ideas on some Induction Mods? Any help would be appreciated!

1.9 cdti airbox mod seems to be the one of choice at the moment
i'm sure someone can elaborate more

nice car and welcome!

Thanks Nuggs!

Will look into that. Anybody have any up for sale? :D

Hah, I actually do just want one. Or two, like kabel.

Definitely get a map though, first port of call... imo. You can do the 1.9cdti airbox mod yourself quite easily if you like, although Holden are a bit of a ripoff on the airboxes, and you'll need to modify it to fit the 80mm afm. If you want more details just ask :)

Welcome to the site mate. If you need any details on the airbox mod have a look here.

There are a few maps for the vxr, the main 3 being blufin, dreamscience and EDS all in handheld units. Each has their strengths and weakness's.

Hi there Guys!
Thanks for the replies!

mania: Im sure I'll be able to do the airbox mod myself. A bit of a technical guy :D. I did see this though:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNroX0kXoKs (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNroX0kXoKs)

I LOVE that blow off sound. Just has an internal DV and Cone filter.
Im in Alice Springs NT, so not much on offer here by way of sotware uprades

Soory bro! Wont part with my Opel badge! Reminds me of my Opels I had back home :D

Nurb608: Thanks man! Lovely car you have there! Unfortunately, being in alice Springs, its hard to find a tuner to do maps

EL BURITO: Thanks! Will keep an eye out for Kim or Shaun

Cheers mate. In relation to the maps, no need for a tuner as they are handheld units that plug straight into your car and upload. Have a look on www.hsvvxr.com (http://www.hsvvxr.com) aswell, plenty of info on there for our cars.

Also most (all?) are a one time cost, and then you can change the maps as much as you like. So should you fit an uprated intercooler, etc, you can change the map for free.

One more reason to get the map first, before you do anything else :).

EDIT: If you do take the cone filter route, be sure to heat shield it well. Needs to be completely partitioned off from the engine bay. To see why, just try disconnecting the cold air feed to the airbox and go for a drive around in Alice Springs :p. Resulting heat soak is terrible..

Nurb608: Thanks Nurb! any idea what something like this would cost? Also, the car is still under warranty. Will this void?

mania: I would LOVE to go for a bigger intercooler! Just waiting for the warranty to expire!:)

Ash, the onus is on them to prove a modification you have made caused and problems.

They still have to cover you for anything that's not your fault. So really there's not much point in waiting until it's out of warranty.. as if it's the modification that's going to break the car, you'll be paying for it whether it's in warranty or not.

So go right ahead :) get your 300bhp from a simple exhaust and intercooler change. (Can you detect the jealousy in that statement? ;))

EDIT: as an example, if you fit an intercooler... and a month later the water pump started leaking, they'd have a hard time proving that one lead to the other. In fact, they couldn't, because it didn't. :)

Haha I can feel it dripping from my fingers :p. I like the silver too.

As a word of warning though, they probably can point to any power mod north of an airbox mod and say that caused the gearbox/clutch to fail... but then again, they'd probably be right.

Thanks! I always liked it in Silver! Actually a bit of an uncommon colour for the VXRs

You're probably right about the power mods! I think I'll just play it safe for now and just go the induction route. The setup on that OPC in the youtube video really interests me! Its the kinda sound Im looking for!

Welcome and very nice VXR. You'll have to come to a few qld meets/cruise ;)

The blow off sound when backing off in that youtube video is called a turbo flutter or doseing. To achieve that sound you'll just need a pod filter and pull the lower vac hose off your BOV unit underneath you car.

This can reduce the life of your turbo and may harm some componemts in the long term. Also backing off might not be as smooth as it was when the vac hose still connected.

IMO get a pod filter and if your worried heat shield it and get a CAI and you'll still get a psssst sound when changing gears, and will not harm a thing. When choosing a pod filters its best to get a dry cotton filter aka 3A racing pod and not an oiled one eg. K&N

Hope that helps,

Chris

They cost anywhere from about $850 - $1200. Everyone has their own opinions, best to make up your own mind on them though as everyone will say theirs is the best :)

Even fitting the cdti airbox makes the turbo considerably louder... which may be one explanation for the ridiculous crossover arrangement in the first place. :)

Mine sounds like this with pod - custom intake, 3"dump pipe, intercooler, re-map.

Thanks for all the replies guys! Its so great to see so many like minded people helping each other out :D! I've been reading through the forums and they are brilliant :yikes:!

chrissn89: Thanks! The VXR (OPC back home) has always been my dream car, ever since it was released back in 2006 when I was still driving around in my 1.4 Opel Corsa Chill (I think its called the Barina here? - Maybe I'll post some pics). And Im SO happy I finally have one :D:D:D!

Your car sounds fantastic!! What DV are you using there? The dump on your car sounds great! I would love to install a CIA unit, but I've been told that this requires cutting / modification of the bodywork? Is this true? If it is, would just a Pod Filter and heatshield, with a Short Ram Intake setup give the same sound?

With regards to the turbo flutter, would this be possible with the vac hose still connected? And would it help to get an aftermarket internal DV to replace the stock one? Please excuse me if my questions seem a bit trivial, just trying to learn as much as possible :). Knowledge is POWER as they say (177Kw of power at the moment:D)

Nurb608: Thanks for the help! I will do some research online abot the software and then see which one "looks" the best :). Will a software upgade affect the warranty. I have a friend back home in South Africa who bought an 06 Astra GSI Turbo, and he was told by the Opel Dealership that if he messed with the software, it would void his warranty!

btm: Thanks mate! I think the silver gives it a very sleek look !

mania: I know what you mean! It seems that the whole stupid "over the engine" crossover system is one of the silliest things Opel ever made !

maloo97: Thanks Maloo!

Once again guys, thanks for all the help!

Im just running the stock BOV/DV, there just alot more audible with a pod filter and the cross over pipe removed.

Yes running a CAI (cold air intake) you would have to cut into your wheel arch. As you can see from my pics im just using the stock, air intake and my pod is not heat shielded. I live in the country and only have to stop at one stop sign on the way to work. I dont feel any heat soak on my 10km trip to work, plus having the bigger front mount intercooler helps.

Hmm the turbo flutter maybe possible with the vac hose still connected, but the theory is still the same. Youve got to give the compressed air from the turbo no where to go once youve backed off. The turbo flutter sound is the air going back through the turbo and being chopped up. In turn slowing down your turbo and putting excess pressure on the bearings. Thus when your in the next gear youve got to wait for the turbo to spool up again because when you changed gears the air (flutter) sound was trying to make the turbo spin the other way.

Hope that all makes sense,

Ash VXRoz

Thanks chrissn89!

I think I'll just go the route you have then, and just use the "non-crossover" short ram intake and pod filter setup like yours. Might just change the OE dv to an aftermarket direct replacement, as these are stronger and last longer. Would a heatshield on the Pod filter help? As I said, the vehicle is still under warranty, so I dont want to go cutting body panels to fit on a CAI system :D

Alot of them can be put back to stock before you bring it in to your dealership. Anything you do to your car may affect your warranty but only if it attributes directly to any issue you bring it in for under your warranty.

By the way, if your looking at a dump valve, look at the twin piston version, something like a baileys dv26 etc, the others apparently will give you issues.

Hi Nurb608

I was just looking through your thread in the "Members Rides" section of the forum. (All 14 or so pages :D) Your car looks hot!

I see that you went for a custom exhaust. Have a look at my post on the "wants" section. Maybe you can give me some advice?

I threw up the link for the Piper 3" in there and if you search in the forum it's linked to it will list all the ones everyone has mentioned. They all should perform pretty much the same, just realistically comes down to the sound your after. Unless your going to be running a heap more power than stock the performance wouldn't be that noticable. I went for a custom job as it was cheaper and could get the sound I wanted trying different mufflers etc, the first setup was a bit over the top and would have got pulled over pulling out of their workshop lol. As people have mentioned, the main restrictions are in the cats and mufflers. First 2 things to look at would be fitting a precat pipe that replaces the original precat then fit a sports high flow main cat, 200cell usually does the trick. Mind you, doing this will sometimes throw up your emisions light as the sensor detects that the readings are outside of the stock range. Some maps will combat this issue for ya.

Have they done any work on Astra Turbos? No idea, the cars I've seen have been Magnas. There's one in there at the moment being 'somewhat' modified I understand.

I suppose from what I've seen, they are willing to do pretty wild work, so you never know what they can do for you.
