Importing an Opel

Hello, I have an Opel Zafira (2001;1.8cc) and want to bring it to Australia when I move there soon. I see the tax would be based upon the value of the Zafira in Australia. Does anyone have any experience improting an Opel? I wonder how to get an appraisal of an Opel in Australia where it seems the Zafira is made by Holden. I am not sure if Holden makes the 1.8cc model.

yer i agree, the cost to import it to australia would be huge, better off buying one here unless there is something special about yours,

no holden didn't make any part i don't think !

There are quite a few hurdles that you must jump through 1st.

1. Holden already import this vehicle into Australia.
2. In order for you to import the Zafira into Australia, you must have owned and used the vehicle in the country that you wish to import the vehicle for a period of not less than 12 months. You must be able to provide passport details to Customs verifying that you have remained in the country for that whole time.

Customs Duty = 5% of Purchase Price
GST = 15% of Purchase price + Duty amount

3. You must obtain a permit to import from the Dept. Of Transport in Canberra to import a motor vehicle.

Unless the Zafira is a lot cheaper than the Holden model, don't waste your time.

I presume you are from HK so more likely than not it is used for 1 yr straight. Follow the list that skibum stated above if you want to follow this path.

The 1.8 Zafira will be a rareity but won't be worth as much as the official 2.2 that is brought into Aust. Unless there is more features you want to keep in your Zafira, then it's not really worth it. Buy something else in HK (something not brought out officially into Aust) and bring that in but make sure you drive that for a year. Service wise it is not a problem because we have the 1.8 if you really want to bring your Zafira in and panels is no problems. OPC Zafira won't be worth it either for those that don't care about fast van unlike in Asia... no demand for such cars.

The Zafira roughly worth the low A$20k ~ HK$110k for a 2nd hand model (which I don't recommend because of the lower spec). www.redbook.com.au gives you an idea as to how much cars cost 2nd hand here.

Pending on your location is yours LHD or RHD, Aust is RHD, if your is LHD dont bring it in the country, Cost you more on tax. and you may possibly not get it registered let alone insured. if you are bringing it in check for insurance with some companies first, it may cost you a fortune to insure

i woudl recomend you sell your car and buy a new or second hand zafira here.

apart from having you pay so much tax to and shipping costs into australia, insurance will cost alot!

Our main insurance companies dont insure imported vehicles so you need to go to a specialised company and it will cost about $HKD8000-15000+ per year to insure.

If you buy the zafira sold in australia then you may be able to get insruance for as low as $HKD 2000-3000(depending on how old you are and where you live).

I know cause i work for one of the largest insurance companies in australia.

i'd recommend sell yours and upgrade to 2.2 zafira when you get here!

BTW Holden just import all opels from belgium and change the badges. (the cars are not made in australia.)

Sell your car buy a Zafira OPC extra set of opc whells + engine and brin all here . i can store the extra parts 4 you 8)
