BF wants oppinions on what people think he should get. Rather than i keep posting in another unrelated thread i thought id make one related and maybe put up a pole, if i can work out how...

Ok his budget is approx $30k doesnt mind where in australia its coming from as he's ready to pay for transport of the car as hes already been quoted for it. :p

any other suggestions?? and what would people reccomend but please note he wants something newer than 2002 atleast and nothing to big, so no 4wds or family sedan commodores

From that list, I'd be tossing between the xr5, vxr and golf. My friends hate golfs though, so that one's out :p.. leaving with xr5 and vxr. Greatly prefer the looks of the vxr though.. (think I just prefer 3 doors).

Get him to test drive a NEW Golf 118TSi and see how much one is on the road with the Sports pack (sports seats, 17 inch alloys, fogs, sports suspension and privacy glass)
It will feel sporty and plush/expensive at the same time.

He can then save up $1600 and get the 150kW/300Nm reflash :)

Otherwise a 1-2yr old Golf GTi is the way to go. Steer clear of DSG versions.

This reference isn't going to work, but to me it looks like a citroen version of the pontiac aztek (http://www.businessweek.com/the_thread/brandnewday/Pontiac-Aztek-2002.jpg)... as driven by the chemistry teacher off Breaking Bad (great tv show that hasn't really hit our shores). Between that, the mini-suv rear, and the angular lines on the front (especially the citroen "badge") not keen on it. Shame because I like the interior (seats especially look good), and the side-on (type-rish?) look isn't bad either..

rjastra, curious is the warning against dsg because it limits tuning or some other reason?

DSG equipped Golfs etc just require extra servicing of the gearboxes over a normal manual model. Oil/Filter changes or the gearbox (its a wet clutch design)

Actually a 207 GTi might be a nice car to have. Relatively nippy (Mini Cooper S engine) and very well equipped, destinctive styling. Reasonable value for money as well.

Also, see if you can find the last of the Integras (base or type s). Quite a nice mixture of performance and luxury features.

What does this guy want from a car?? hard core performance? luxury? Mixture of both?

It might be wise to cost insurance on all the cars he is looking at first. I expect it will eliminate quite a few of the cars on the list

Golf GTi for me, such a great car with modern interior, good performance and fuel consumption plus, unlike the SRi-T, has a fairly decent resale value!!!

Also many options for tuning for them her in OZ, some are a bit pricey though!!

Another car to consider is the Golf GT, offered in both 2.0 high performance diesel and 1.4 turbo/supercharged petrol, both great cars too!

for me,

I would look at XR5, VXR, GTI & MPS3.

drive them to see if you like it.

all good cars, just depends on what you prefer.

if you can find a bargain of one of the above, you'll be very happy with the above.

I've had my GTI for 3 months, can't fault it except for the panels and doors, way thinner/lighter than my SRiT.

actually not many cars' panels are as strong as the astra.

To replicate the seats out of the original mk 1 GTi, i think they look alright, but if i was getting one, i'd go for the heated leather seats!!!

You could get him to look at a Polo Gti... spec it with the leather seat option for a more luxurious interior.

The FIAT 500 is very exxy for what you get. Looks good though. $28K drive away for a sport --- eeeekkk.

I'd be more tempted by the Punto Sport for 25K drive away.

ok went inspecting of cars today.. still in love with the 500 but too tall for it, there is no seat height adjustment and head is mm off the roof but that could be cause of the sunroof..

test driving a VXR tommorow so shall see what turbo astra is like was out of price but at $35k, but just to see what car is like might aswell..

test drove a new lancer vrx today with auto paddle shifters, sounded droney inside, looked nice but, paddles are off the column not wheel which annoyed him..

He discovered a new car to the list today aswell the fiat Ritmo, didnt test drive it nor the 500 as the guys at alf barbagello were douchebags.. they saw him looking at the aston martins eyeing them off dreaming etc came down asked if he can help, goes oh yeh where are your fiat 500 (trying hold back laughter i bet:p) but yeh may go back and insist a test drive of one of them...

didnt bother with citroen, ford didnt have any focus xr5s or even zetecs, no new fiesta xr4 and there is suposably no word of one yet :(.. no MPS or even sp23 at mazda on ugly new 3 series everywhere..

was too hard to get to the vw dealership today, but will check out the polo gti, looked at golf gti today but was DSG and tartan interior, so didnt bother..

Looked at s2000, was too cramped inside but so nice too look at :p

best car of the day was an Integra Luxury, interior was so nice, felt nice to sit in, didnt get to drive as the sales man didnt seem to care for a sale :( another douchebag..

Wheels this month has a test of all the 4 cylinder small cars (Mazda 3 etc). The Mazda3 and Golf TSi90 top the list by a large margin.

Does he like the new Fiesta Zetec? Apparently you can get a reflash on that for a power boost to around 100kw (up from 88).

A old model Golf GT Sport (1.4 twin charger) is a good buy as well

Thats because you're going from your XR4, the Micra i think for what it is, is actually very good, my Excel on paper is 2 kw more and about 80kg lighter, but my mum beat me in her Micra, and it drives smoother as well!!

Both the Getz and Micra weren't built as performance cars, something to think about...

Its got same engine as calibrated's audi minus the 373cc injectors. So got a few things to work with. There are 260bhp polos around after only a couple of mods :D

Found a 07 Black CD AH Coupe for 16990 at john hughes today with only 21000kms.. tempted just by how cheap it is... went and saw the xr4s laurie they got a black one there with the red interior/black dash, it was rather nice just the white/blue one they had has the blue dash which looks cheap..


also looked at a black 225 renault in vic park for $22000 that was nice too but not sure about the arse on that thing..
