..sri-t, reasonable impact up front..

The local wreckers has had astras with much less damage and both a/b's have gone off.

Might have been backed into by a truck? :)

hmmm....i would've had said yes - it should've gone off.
then again, do airbags still go off if the car is swtiched off or unoccupied?
ur truck theory could b true.

perhaps they had an airbag warning light, as the airbags don't deploy when it's on..?

it shouldnt matter if igniton is on or not i woulda thought
whats the use of a safety device that only works sometimes

i could be wrong though

Nope, nor will the passenger one go off if no one is sitting in that seat. On the Hs at least..

weird crash - right front quarter panel and headlight have no damage.

I'm pretty sure the airbags and seatbelt pre-tensioners are linked to sensors that sense the g-force in the crash - maybe the car was stationary and someone hit it (rather than the car moving and stopping suddenly)

They may only deploy 'sometimes', because as we all know... there's many variables; speed of this car, speed of other object, angle of impact etc etc

It's a hard one...

There's also experts who say if you only have a bruise or two, you probably didn't need them

Nope, i was involved in a much harder front hit and the airbags didn't deploy, the airbag sensors can judge the force of the impact and judge if it's necessary or not (in a split second too)

Yeah mine was roughly at the same speed, but i wasn't injured at all, so didn't seem necessary that the airbags should have gone off!!

I guess the question is: Could the driver (and passenger) walk away? If so, you wouldn't want the airbags going off as they would probably just increase the chance of injury.

The photos look a lot less severe than the 64 km/h Euro NCAP test:

There are two sensors that work together and both should be tripped to set the airbags off.

One on impact pressure and the other on acceleration or deceleration in a single plane of approx 270 degrees (I think that was what I read...) from the centre of the car forward...

If the car was stationary when it was hit, either IMHO:

a: no one was in it and they didn't go off due to no body weight on the seats; or

b: it was a slow crunching impact like a truck backing into it or similar...

If it was moving or was hit by a fast moving object coming in the opposite direction, there would have been a sudden rapid increase in acceleration/deceleration (and a lot more damage) in the right direction to set off the airbags, which should have gone off.

Check the seat belts, if they are slack or don't move, someone may have been in the car as the pre-tensioners should have fired also...

This usually stops the airbags going off when hit from behind, which is what the seats and headrests are for, until you hit something in front and stop and then they go off...

Great in theory, not always the way it works in the real world...

how did u hit car? they only go off if impact is within 30 degrees of centre... basicly a head on with ass of a car or tree etc.

gman
25th May 2009, 07:33 PM
A side impact should set them off also if the car or momentum is moving forward enough...Just an "in case" measure IIRC...

..most bidders will be looking at repairing this and selling rather than wrecking.

AAS is gonna put in a few bids but thinks the competition will be tough 'cos they're so rare... I reckon about 4.5-5k.. will post how much it goes for when the auction ends.

gman
