Ok so i received this in an email....and have no clue to its validity....but
What do you think? i really should go out and have a look...i have a feeling it actually is there...but is it a speed camera?

Dear All,There are some new very hidden fixed speed cameras in Melbourne. All listed below.... There's one on Maroondah Hwy in Croydon between Croydon and Dorset Rds - a few hundred metres along from the bottom of the big hill. When you see the stripes it means that there is a speed camera. The locations for these new cameras are listed below. The one in question is located at the bottom of a very steep hill. Of course it is illegal for a radar or mobile speed camera to be set up in these sort of positions but its ok if its fixed.Just a heads up on a new speed camera system they are testing It's a cylindrical pole about 2m high with 3 Perspex stripes on it (I assume they hide cameras, one for each lane of the highway), and there's some matching sensors on the far side of the road in the gutter. Here's what it looks like :

http://www.opelaus.com/forums/cid:[email protected]://www.opelaus.com/forums/cid:[email protected] investigated this story on the net and it seems to be legit but there are already many people planning to paint the roadside sensors or cut the conduit from the solar panel

Wouldn't surprise me Sooty, I've seen a few new variations of fixed and mobile cameras being used/tested in the last month in my area.

One place they are using them is on the OTHER side of an intersection so when you boot it slightly through the orange you get stung 10 metres the other side.

Shifty Buggers

And all this talk about speed limiters in new vehicles ???

Yeah right, after investing in all these revenue raising devices and the revenue that they rake in, I'm sure they'll take that away from themselves

Is there some law that they have to announce there is a fixed camera?

In NSW there are always signs before the Camera though i am not sure if that is true for all camera's but all that i have seen anyway..

Good question, I'd like to know the answer to that one myself...

There are certainly no warnings on them here in Vic.

Great detterent that is for road safety  just adds to the fact that they're easy/free money revenue raisers...

Best thing to do is simply not speed, don't give them the satisfaction, there's a time and a place for everything I suppose, but in most driving situations you should never have to speed anyway :)

Just enjoy the 'spirited run' the the speed limit where you happen to be driving at the time :cornut:

i think those sensors are similar to those rubber strips that they used to use...? i think to count the number of cars on the road I don't think they would be for speeding..

those two rubber strips that run to a little box on the side of the road?? They were done by main roads to count traffic and the usage of roads, etc..

this is posted on the RTA Website:

The key objectives of the fixed speed camera program are to ensure that drivers keep to the legal speed limit and to reduce crashes and thereby prevent deaths and injuries on NSW roads.

Every fixed speed camera is accompanied by high profile advance warning signs and the community advised of the start of its operation by a media release detailing the camera location, crash history at the site or reason for the cameras installation and the date of commencement.

Read the link i posted guys in vic if you're curious about it, they're very intelligent people who've posted.
The ones without the pole in the gutter can indeed measure speed, but they do not issue fines, they're solely used like the counter boxes to measure traffic flow and speeds (for peak hour etc).
I believe this camera has a sign near it saying that it's there...it's already been damaged twice by vandals.
And Ange...a lot of our fixed cameras have signs (ie eastlink, geelong rd etc):)

Oh yeah, forgot about those :o

They should put signs on every single last one of them, including parked vehicle speed traps, that way they become a proper deterrent and people WILL actually slow down....

Yeah . . . until they drive past, then they speed up again. No different to the oncoming traffic that flashes their lights to warn you are approaching a car mounted camera. As soon as drivers are past them, you can see them accellerating away again.

As I have said before . . . do the crime, pay the fine. Don't speed, no fine, no need to argue whether they are there for revenue raising or to help reduce road accidents.
Pretty simple, really!

Thats a current list...
There are just over 80 cameras in Victoria - both red light and speed cameras.. the wet film ones are the old looking camera boxes. They are the normal looking ones, any cameras that look like that (the pics earlier) aren't being used in Victoria at the moment

I know of at least one redlight/speed camera that's not on that list...so it's not complete...but gives a good idea anyway.
As for the pics earlier....they're not being used to fine anyone atm....but they're still out and about being tested....drove past this one yesterday, remembered at the last minue to look for it and noticed the sensors in the gutter

I'm sure every one of the fixed speed/red light cameras here in Vic have a sign saying that there is a "road safety" camera ahead - however the signs themselves are not exactly that visible (as opposed to the signs in NSW/QLD)
