Some constructive criticism
1-3, the lighting is wrong.
1st - Complex foreground takes the attention away from the car. Crop it down a bit. Also I'd reduce the yellow in the photo.
2nd - too much flash lighting in the foreground again, causing an imbalance in the photo.
3rd - I can see what you were trying to achieve. next time try from a lower angle, and zoom in a bit more, trying to cut out as much bright background light as possible.
4th - Good shot. Crop it, decrease the highlights a little, bit more contrast and black level.
5th - Bit more saturation, bit more black, bit more contrast.

Hope that helps mate. You're doing good.

thanks heaps mate.
yeah they were all just spur of the moment things, as we were driving past was just like, oh yeah will take a photo there, and it was freezing so we didnt set up well, or try as much as i would have liked.

first 4 are very slightly editted, just a lil contrast and saturation (and at 1 in the mornin)
last is just as it was taken.

i will try mess around with the 4th, i like that one, we got a couple more at different angles.
gah i always forget, should have tried to make a hdr of the 4th one
will try

that was a good critique, Pauly - even to the level where I, as a layperson could understand.

Good shots still though Shay. To me 1&3 emote chic, though with warmth & a sense of familiarity (probably the Vec :P) 2 Has the contrast between the harsh blinding white and the black background with the warming ambers. 4 is probably my least favorite as it doesn't say anything to me except "here's a Vectra and BMW in a parking lot" Lastly, 5 could be interpreted as "the thin line of civilization floating in between the darkness of the abyss" (nah actually I tried too hard to get that interpretation, it looks like a city skyline which, fair enough, has been done a lot).

Anyway now you can contrast the uninformed critique of mine with the pro critique of Pauly and you'll be set. (nah actually just listen to pauly :P)

Shay
6th July 2009, 10:01 PM
lol at jerram

4 means the most to me.
thats my best mates car.
to me its like...
euro drivin mates, standing proud, tackling the roads together...

and btw yes i went home and hosed the car soooo well (was salt water), half the reason i washed it.

2 is my least fav, i didnt take it. had no control, but i liked the contrast of my car v surrounding, but would have been better if the flash didnt get caught on the ground.

Hi,

just looking for some advice...

has anyone taken photos of fire at night?
want to do some arty shots with my car and fire at my house.
want to know things like iso, exposure, shutter speed...

do you thtink i should light the car up with a spotlight too, or just rely on the fires.

we got a 7 x 8m concrete pad up the back, with a 2.5m high limestone wall at the back.
i sorta got the shot planned out...
oh, fires will be in 2 halves of a 44 gallon drum and 2 washing machine drums, so i've got 4 largish fires, and was prob gonna put some fuel soaked wood on some A4 sized metal trays we have.

depends on what you want from the photo??

do you want something that looks 'fire and brimstone evil'?? then low-med Iso say 400 at most, quick shutter speed so it catches embers without trails, exposure will need to be high as its nighttime and light is scarce..

trial and error :p just dont burn your house down!:D

ARGH
Change your settings to take raw images.
There is so much more you can do with them.
Send it anyway and I'll have a play.

With carpark image, you can notice the lights in the top corners are taking over the photo in a way. What I'd suggest for you to do is lower the highlights in the photo, but still keep the level of normal light fairly neutral.
Colour saturation, red and blue I'd put up maybe +5 to +10, and the other colours I'd put down.

If you compare the original with the one you've edited, you can notice especially with your car, its not washed out into the background anymore.
Also I'd crop it a little. Your aim is to focus on the 2 cars, but atm there's too much wasted space in a way around them.

I just had a quick play at work, and this it what I've done

ISO 400 - 800
f5
shutter speed max 1 sec (any more, and you don't get the flame texture)

Only use the fire to light up the car. Reason is the flames will give a completely different light colour to the spot light, and using the 2 will cause a imbalance and mismatch of light in the photo.

i love it. the fact that im never goin to be a pro, but can still take/make awesome shots.

tho i do feel bad for the guys who are trying to make a living out of it, must be a really hard slog with all the try hards around.
obviously the "real deals'" work still stands out, just a lot less than it used to, ie before digital.

Getting good mate. Love seeing your progress.
Question, did the veccy C have headlights or fog lights on in those photos?

Shay

just headlights im pretty sure.

PaulyJ

Try using foglights next time ;)

ChrisMaz

Nope had both on. ;)

PaulyJ
1st October 2009, 02:09 PM
That explains a lot actually
The fronts of the cars are too bright.
When dont that, use only fogs or at absolute most the headlights.
Never both.

That kink looks a bit harsh
What if you set it like so:

TB -> 30deg bend -> sensor -> filter

It'll be a smoother flowing setup, and shorter too.

chris always swanted it to match up to stock intake, which really cramps for room and the angles you can have it
as it is is the best way IMO, and btw that pipe is huge 80mm, and really isnt pinched near as bad as iit looks
