"BMW is reportedly developing a 350bhp triple-turbo version of its 3.0 six-cylinder diesel engine for duty in new performance versions of the X5 and X6 - and eventually the company’s entire saloon car range. (http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/news/default.asp?storyId=19739)

New X5 tri-turbo said to ape X5 M style
The intriguing story is doing the rounds on the web after details of the development program were posted on a German car forum. Apparently tri-turbo equipped X5s are already being ’Ring tested, although key body differences are currently disguised. These are said to include wider arches - although slimmer than those on the X5 M – and a new front end that will also mimic the X5 M’s style but with smaller grille openings.
It is claimed that the new generation of tri-turbos will come with ‘Efficient Dynamics’ features such as regenerative braking and Start-Stop technology, and the original forum post says the diesel development is part of a new ‘Supersports’ program designed to bring greater performance to drivers of petrol and diesel engined BMWs."

Tri-turbo!! I'm guessing 1 for general efficiency/driveability and the other 2 for the big power output? or the other way around...

Who cares how it works? All I can think about is that monstrous torque, in a range starting at just 1,200 rpm or so. I'm talking here about 700 Nm! Imagine a little 3 series coupe with that beast under the hood...

Awesome ..... bout time BMW come up with something like this.

Wonder how merc are going to respond.....right now they are more concerned about saving money.

omg TRIPLE ...... TRIPLE ? TRIPLE ? woah !

actually the Concept Ford GT90 had a Quad turbo and that was over a decade ago.

Bugatti had it nearly 16yrs ago if I remember correctly.

OK - multiple turbo, turbosupercharger or twin charger systems have been used in piston engined aircraft since the 1930's, so none of this sort of thing is new to recent times, except its application to vehicles other than aircraft...

Speeking of the above vehicles, I'd be happy with the 123d (2.0ltr twin turbo diesel) 1 series coupe Beemer, even over a 135i if they ever bring it here like so many other variants we miss out on :(

It uses 1 small and one larger turbo (variable twin turbo set up) and I've read can be mapped to around 175kw and over 500nm - not a bad power package in a 1 series coupe :)

Stock standard 123d 1 series hatch runs 0-100km/h in 6.9sec, so I'd imagine a remapped hatch or coupe would be good for low 6's as well returning around 6ltrs/100km fuel consumption - not bad, would make a nice DD choice :)

I think the Toureg diesel already beat them...

...without the pretentiousness.

yeah, they beat them with a 5.0 litre V10 that moves top shelf toerags. BMW gets more power and just as much torque from this 3.0 V6.

Be interesting to see what the CO2 and fuel consumption figures are then...

To be honest, I would be more than happy with the existing twin turbo diesel, like the one in the 335d that BMW did not bring here. So easy to get it tuned to 350 HP and 700 Nm! (http://www.evo-s.co.uk/shop/index.php?cPath=6_2372_2945_2979) A $1,300 remap in UK.

"Evolve produce one of the fastest 335d's in the UK currently with 13.2 1/4 mile. A standard M3 CSL does this on average.
Over 7/8ths of a mile, our remapped 335d is quicker than a tuned (deCAT, exhaust + ECU remap) M3 CSL."

imagine this engine in the R8
