Opel bringing in a Scirocco fighter? (http://www.topspeed.com/cars/car-news/opel-bringing-in-a-scirocco-fighter-ar69458.html)

Posted on 01.20.2009 17:30 by Myles Kornblatt (http://www.topspeed.com/myles_kornblatt)
We like coupes. They may not always be faster than their sedan (http://www.topspeed.com/cars/opel-calibra/ke1985.html#) counterparts, but at least they look faster.
Opel sold the Calibra between 1989 and 1997 to Europe, Austalia and South America. It was basically a Vectra (http://www.topspeed.com/cars/opel-vectra/ke1249.html) with the rear doors lobbed off, but also almost made the Vectra cool. Now that Opel is making sedans that are already cool like the Insigna (http://www.topspeed.com/cars/opel/2009-opel-insignia-ar56043.html), an ultra-cool commuter coupe would be the perfect compliment. We picked up rumors of a new Calibra a while ago (http://www.topspeed.com/cars/car-news/vauxhall-calibra-to-come-back-in-2009-ar39356.html). We just assumed that since the chatter died out, so did the car. Now, according to the German magazine AutoZeitung, there is a Calibra on the drawing board for 2011.
This time is going down in size, and using the next Astra (http://www.topspeed.com/cars/opel/2010-opel-astra-ar59486.html)’s platform to do battle with cars (http://www.topspeed.com/cars/opel-calibra/ke1985.html#) like the Volkswagen Scirocco (http://www.topspeed.com/cars/volkswagen/2009-volkswagen-scirocco-ar53406.html) and Renault Laguna Coupe (http://www.topspeed.com/cars/car-news/renault-laguna-coupeeuropean-prices-announced-ar64012.html). Under the hood of the new model Opel will likely place a wide range of engines, both gasoline and diesel (http://www.topspeed.com/cars/opel-calibra/ke1985.html#) ranging from 130 hp to 250 hp.
All of these specs have us excited, but there still is a dark cloud. If a new Calibra does go into production, its unlikely General Motors will put it on a boat for the U.S.

interesting read... but..

Seems everyone likes the concept :)

Only fitting a new one should be beautiful, since the old Calibra is still one of the best looking cars around, even though it's 20 years old...

i love the look of it too.
although im not complaining, look at the rear wheel compared to front...
looks like front is 17 or 18 inch, and the rear is 20, looks nice like that though!
love the look of the rear quarter, very nice.
do we have any more cg pics?

i will admit thats the first thing i thought when i saw the front so u arent alone. they do have slight similarities.
but if it was to come to australia (or even come out for that matter), it may look different to that image i would think

Oh yeah......welcome back Nik :)

Lets not be concerned with the myth of a new Cali anymore !

209kw at all 4 corners, sounds impressive bet your loving it and that sound, have you run your Sti on a track or 1/4 mile yet :)

blueraven
31st March 2009, 01:57 PM
track and skidpan yes, 1/4 mile no...

its kinda funny, 1/4 mile times seem so irrelevant after you get some time on the track...

(i suspect low 12's :) )

Great to see your enjoying track work :)

Low 12's is nothing short of awesome...that translates to a very potent street weapon, certainly way beyond your previous Astras' capabilities :cornut:

Yeh, that would be a pain in the rear and one unfortunate aspect of owning a well known type of hi po vehicle, ie. every hoon dickhead on the roads wants to give you a run, even if they know their vehicle is inferior and dosn't stand a chance, they still wanna run

I remember it used to happen to me alot when I had my HSV R8, funnily enough, the majority of the time it was always young drivers, mainly P platers with 4 potters of all types who would do this, I used to bump into other Commodores whether V8's or not, but rarely got hassled, seems these young hoon 4 pot owners are the ones that've got to try and prove something all the time :out:

You have to drive around for ever having to ignore all these idiots along with their unwanted attention...
