im after a new camera,
in the 400 to 700 sort of range,
i love the go-anyware-ness of point and shoot,
but love the quality of D-SLR,
also not a huge fan of fiddling with settings,
but again love the results that come with it.
id also love one with 60sec + shutter capability,
most of the cannons look like they only go to 15sec,

anyway,
any ideas on what i should look into gettin.
thanks guys

After a quick google it looks like most reviews state this one to be the pick of the bunch. Would I still be able to change lenses on this one?

PaulyJ

My 400D has bulb feature, meaning you can have the shutter open for as long as you want.

Shay
12th March 2009, 03:04 PM

What's good about the Canon's, all Canon's, is they use the same imaging processor, right up to the top level shit, so you're always getting a good camera.

Shay
12th March 2009, 08:44 PM
k mate might look into a canon, theres a reconditioned dslr on there for about 480. think its the second from base model

poita

Ok i also want a new camera cos my Cybershot refuses to stay on after a few days of rain in QLD (lasted a good 6 years, and got a heck of alot of use and thrashing, if you can thrash a camera...)

However, i'm not really all professional with my pics (that's why i got fellow Vic pro pohotgrapher members) so kinda want a cheapish camera maybe $400 max!!

I also need a new phone and my old phone took decent pics, should i go all out and get a good phone with a good camera, or just get seperate phone and camera??

They might have the same processor but the size changes.
Top end are full frame but I'm not sure where it stops.

I love my 400D though

full frame sensor starts at 50D

Correction I beleive it starts on a 5D...

The 1D has a x1.3 FCOV

then the 1Ds has full frame again...

everyones talking CANON ..... what about Nikon... have u had look at the D60... its a brand new camera from Nikon - 10.2 megap, 2.5" LCD - its designed specificallly to have less buttons so that the photographer can concentrate on taking photos - very userfriendly - which sounds like something you're looking for in a DSLR.

I think they retail for about $750.00 (body only).

Shay

id really love one that does live view i love the fact you can look at the screen and thats the photo you take.

that nikon sounds half decent can it do this ^^^

aza28
14th March 2009, 01:13 PM
no. D60 doesn't have Live View Function. You'd have to go for the D90 if you want Live View. Canon's base model 1000d has live view.

Rhino

Thats the base model Canon DSLR
Good camera

What you need to understand is, these cameras will allow you to do so much more than any regular point and shoot.
Its not just a better quality picture.

I'd recommend with any first time DSLR buyer, to buy the base model, and learn to use the camera and all its functions. This takes time though.
Sure you can set it any of the automatic functions, and away you go. Yes your photos will be good.
I discovered a whole new world when I did a course, and learnt what my camera could actually do. Learnt what each of the functions do, what they allow you to do, and why we need them and change/use them constantly.

ICE and Corsa_Rob I know both have the 1000D. I know they love it, and it is easy to use. Live view is good, but I personally cant go past the viewfinder.

think you can get that as a pack

found a 1000d body with twin IS lenses on ebay for 880

whats the difference between the IS and non-IS

thats sounds like a pretty good deal - just be careful with grey imports because you won't get an Australian Warranty Card.

pretty sure it was in NSW an unwanted prize, but its pickup only

Shay. Go check out Canon's web site.
They've got all the info on their cameras, lenses and accessories.

And check out their Better Photography (http://canon.com.au/visual/bebit/photography.html) site. It'll help you with deciding what sort of photography you want to get in to (you might favour wide angle stuff, sport photography, long exposure, macro...) and what equipment you might need to get the best results.

There is no lens or body that will allow you to do all of them well. It can be a pricey hobby if you want to explore it all.

Personally, I'd skip the whole 'get something basic and work it out, then buy something better'. If you know you want to do photography, get something good straight up. It'll save you $ in the end. If you don't have the budget, maybe wait a bit longer. I'd aim for a 450D (or nikon equivalient) and up. Don't forget, memory cards, lenses (or just filters), bag, tripod maybe, flashes... all $ man. When you find a deal... add a k for goodies :)

Also, since you're in Perth. Join Flickr and the PIP (Photographers In Perth) group. They do 'walks' quite often. Great bunch of guys to get tips off and hang out with to learn a few things.

good tripod and flash units will set you back another 1k, flash you can get away with not using for now but a tripod is a must for low light, macro and night shooting

Rhino
15th March 2009, 08:36 PM
Need a flash for macro too.
Don't want to risk a long exposure in case your subject moves.

Deep DOF on a macro shot (better) needs a small aperture, which needs more artificial light. A shallow DOF on a macro shot can be about 1 - 2 mm. Too shallow.

Get the 580-EXII flash (can buy more slaves later). Great flash!
And a tripod for 1 or 2 hundy.

Shay, there's no such this as 'this will be enough' in photograpy :) Start saving mate. You've started something you won't be able to stop.

I haven't read this entire thread, and it's probably already been mentioned. But invest in good glass. That will be the difference between good and great photos.

Photography is a hobby which is brutal on the wallet.

poita

its up there iwth modifying cars, where does it stop...

totally agree with bill, if you buy shit lenses expect shit photos ;)

Shay
16th March 2009, 12:26 AM
will hold back then,
car comes first.
and future cars ;)
just thinkin... in the future id rather have a HQ tonner as a hobby than photography. sounds like theyll end up costing about the same lol

thanks for all the info guys im sure a lot of ppl have, and will, find it useful
