Big difference between the 50D and 450D. However, I'd only upgrade if the 450D is not doing what you want it to do, which really is not much.
50D is becoming a semi-professional camera, and the 5D Mk II, well yeah... only if you're a pro.

What type of photography are you doing?

hehehe just like a holden vs ford argument.

Both brands are great. It all comes down to personal preference.

I recently got myself a 50D :) I'm very very happy with it. The CMOS sensor is quite excellent - 3200 ISO can still produce ACCEPTABLE images for web use - probably no major print though.

Heres a pic I took with it:

PS's only involvement was to shrink the file and convert to jpg.

I've found that Liveview has shown itself to be extremely handy. While I do try to use the view finder 100% of the time, there are instances where the choice is to either:

1. Use view finder/guess and shoot for 10 minutes or...
2. Use liveview and take the picture perfectly, then move on.

With the liveview you can zoom in (digitally) into your target and refocus even more accurately which is great. I know there are scopes and such for the view finder but those I would imagine (no idea) are pretty $$$. the 50D's inclusion of the liveview is just one of those things thats "better to have and not use than to not have and need it" kinda thing :D

I was taught photography with a Canon so I'll be sticking to them forever :)

The 5D doesn't take just basic photos...
About 4.5G will get you a small 5D setup

lol you know what I meant... for 4.5-6k you wouldn't have all the cool gear you have to take advanced photo's

Lol considering I need it for my work + study and you usually use one for quite a while (i do anyway :P) the final bill was well justified:o. Next one I buy will be a 5D but thats a while away...a long long LONG while away haha.

For other's information, I bought mine @ Camera house in Parra, was the cheapest I could find.

My 17-200 kit is usually $2799 but was and should still be on discount so you should easily get it under that.

Ok well I only have a Samsung L730 point-n-shoot which is fine for portraits but shit for my car pics. If I wanted to buy a relatively cheap camera tonight that takes good pics what should I get?

what do you more serious guys think of this http://www.photoreview.com.au/Panasonic/reviews/advanced/panasonic-lumix-dmcfz18.aspx as an intermediate camera to get me started?

For relatively the same price, you're better off getting a Canon 1000D.
Atleast with the Canon, you'll be able to expand your skills with new lenses etc.

Exactly.

i just bought the 1000D, great camera for learning the ropes, if your new to DSLRs (like me) no point spending any more at this stage.

Bought mine at JB for about $1K (twin lens kit)

Can be. Decent lenses to really bring out the quality in Canon can start at about $3000 for the lens only.

E.g. I have a 400D, it was about $1200 when I got it. It came with a basic 18-55mm lens. I also got:

A 17-85mm IS USM lens, thats $1099
A 70-300mm IS USM lens, thats $1199
A 50mm compact macro, thats $510
A battery grip, thats $300

I would highly recommend www.dpreview.com. It has the answers to everything. These guys get given new models by manufacturers to test and review on.
