This is the first picture of the new Vauxhall Astra, captured for the first time completely undisguised.
Spotted at a GM testing facility in Germany, the car in our exclusive spy pic is a styling model, but it shows how the new Vauxhall Astra will look when it goes on sale at the end of this year.
The new Vauxhall Astra’s true windowline is visible for the first time, as are the rear lights and the real shape of the rear window. Until now we’ve only seen heavily disguised Vauxhall Astras on test.
See our full gallery of pics of the disguised Vauxhall Astra
Underneath the Vauxhall Astra uses GM’s new Delta platform, shared with the new Chevrolet Cruze and destined for al GM’s mid-size cars including the Chevrolet Volt and Vauxhall Ampera.
Unlike the current Astra’s chassis, which is a reworked version of the previous car’s platform, this one is all-new and should offer greater refinement and better handling.
The suspension layout is the same, however, with MacPherson struts at the front and a torsion beam at the rear.
Inside, the dash and centre console are heavily influenced by the Insignia, with a three-dial instrument binnacle and the same wraparound dash that curves the dashtop into the door trims.
Vauxhall’s Ellesmere Port factory, where the new Astra will be built later this year, has already been fitted out with the tooling and production lines needed to manufacture the car.

Interesting..... torsion bar rear end is still standard? Thought IRS was the big upgrade

I'm pretty sure it will have IRS, i think there is a mistake in the article. The Cruze (built on the same platform) does however have torsion beam, but thats cause its a cheaper vehicle, so I think they got confused.

Hmmm...look alright, but it's hard to tell without seeing it all.
All the hatches seem to have similar rear ends now (ie lighting placement/shape etc) well...looks like it to me anyway. Lights also look a little Corsa D like.
Will be interesting to see it in the metal...

For this to be an all new model and not have independant rear suspension will be such a shame

I hope it's incorrect

Spy shots seem to have shown what looks like an IRS setup

As for the shape... I can see the Insignia and Corsa in it

Don't really have an opinion on it atm... seems ok i guess

Looks like a miniturised Mazda CX7/CX9 IMO...

Talk about so many of the new cars these days looking so much alike, the kink on the lower part of the side looks alot like that of the Mazda 2 and new Mazda 3, to me it's beginning to look like Mazda vehicles were the main styling inspiration  at least side profile wise :skep:

Wheels look almost the same as AH VXR items only smaller...

I do like the chrome sweeping door surround trim, don't know whether I like this new Astra or not, need to see it in its entirity and in the metal to make a final call :arf: and no IRS ?? still ?? :rollyeys1:

my thoughts exactly :)

i drove a brand new Tiida couple of weeks ago when holidaying in Tasmania. Hire car. whats the deal with the small window and moving the side mirrors closer to the middle of the front doors?
initially when driving it i was getting a headache because the glass used was kind of "magnifying" :(

They allow the front of the cabin to be brought forward, hence raising the roofline above the front passengers and creating a feeling of space/roominess

It can be used as a clever design feature, as the car may 'feel' bigger and more airy than the previous model, without necessarily making the car larger

It would also work towards drag efficiency... being more aerodynamic you'd think

Here's a question...

In the spy videos, we've seen the wipers sweep to each side of the windscreen (ala Honda Civic)... but in these photos they both sweep towards the driver

I'm confused

Hmmm interesting, don't like the side on look but rear looks ok and interior looks very nice...

The more I look at those pics above, the more it looks like the new Mazda 3 overall, shape of the rear tailgate, some aspects of the front end, even the interior dash in the pic above is very similar to the new Mazda 3 especially the dials and surrounding dash :skep:

There's been no pics of the 3 door at all though. They should be interesting

..looks like a CX7 mated with a Kia Rio :yikes:

Front just seems disproportionate to the rear end. Might look better as a coupe though.

Also how the side mirrors are mounted.. looks like an afterthought with a little patch of glass/plastic in front.

Interior looks nice though, but prefer the inst. cluster not to be so prominent. Hopefully they'll they all come with lcd's instead of 20 year old vfd displays from now on :)

DirtyHarry
27th March 2009, 01:42 PM
the interior looks ok, except for the stupid positioning of the side mirrors..

DirtyHarry
27th March 2009, 01:44 PM
i really dont understand these car designers, they go through these stupid phases.
for example with toyota and nissan...what the **** is it with putting the instrument cluster in the middle of the car...its ****ing useless...and what happens, after a while they put the instrument cluster back on the drivers side.
same thing with these cars with that small window at the front....it used to serve a purpose many decades ago when you could open that small window, but now its just seems, that if one manufacturer does it, then everybody else have to follow.
**** me. be original.
and yes it does resemble a cx7 a bit.
