View Full Version : OpelAus Victorian Bushfire Charity Event

PaulyJ
9th February 2009, 01:02 PM
Hi All,

As you are all aware, the bushfires in Victoria are the worst in Australian history. After discussion with Victorian Members and Pete, we are holding a charity event (photoshoot) on Sunday 15th Feb to raise as much money as we can for all affected and involved in the relief.

As Glenn (Kid_SRI) has advised, donations can be made through:

NAB's $1m appeal for bushfire victims
Call 132 622
Or transfer your donation to
NAB account
BSB 082001
860046797

Bendigo Bank Appeal
1300 366 666
or go to bendigobank. com. au

You can also log onto www.abc.net.au/melbourne (http://www.abc.net.au/melbourne) and donate through the Salvos or Red Cross.

What we are doing here is setting up a donations page tonight, where members can donate money which will all go to one of these funds.

My work has decided to help with this and will be donating, and I will be collecting from individuals as well.
Please let your bosses know that we are donig this, and see if they wish to help out too.

Its at times like these that we really all come together and lend a helping hand in any way we can. I know we're all a great bunch of people here, so lets help out too.

All the best

Paul

Great idea Pauly, i'm sure everyone is more than willing to help if they haven't already :)

My bunnings store alone has got 4 crates full of clothes, torches etc collected since midday yesterday. Who knows how much the rest of them have done.
Good to see when it all falls down, everyone is willing to pitch in to help others...

Another idea would be to go the Western Bulldogs v Essendon game. They have rescheduled it from Sat nite in Darwin to Friday Nite in Melbourne. All proceeds going to the bushfire relief fund.

Also a friend of mine has organised this:

WEAR GREEN FOR SUPPORT DAY! FRIDAY FEBRUARY 13th 2009 - support Victorias Bushfire Victims!

Pass this on to all your contacts in your address book and get as many people involved as possible.

As you know this weekend has been hard on many Victorians, with over 700 homes lost…and over 100 Victorians dead due to the bushfires across the state.

LET’S DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS! LET’S HELP THE PEOPLE IN NEED!

Friday 13th February 2009 is WEAR GREEN FOR SUPPORT DAY

All businesses should encourage their staff members to wear green (a colour which represents new life after fire) and bring a gold coin donation.

Nominate a person in your business to collect all donations on Friday and distribute to any of the following centres – which are sending donations direct to the people affected by the fires;

« Any Red Cross

« Any NAB, ANZ, Westpac or Commonwealth Bank branch

« Any Bunnings store

« Make a direct deposit to the Victorian Bushfire Relief Fund - BSB 082-001, Account number 860-046-797

« Any Victorian Myer store

Join the facebook event for WEAR GREEN FOR SUPPORT DAY and invite everyone you know to participate; http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=2080517&id=749161693#/event.php?eid=49049585834 (http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=2080517&id=749161693#/event.php?eid=49049585834)

Let’s get the ball rolling and help those in need!

just donated $100 to the red cross.

FYI- if you donate to the red cross or registered charity rather than over the counter, it's tax deductible.

so if you were planning to donate say $20 via bank deposit where it is not tax deductible, you're better off to donate $29.20 to the red cross- as it will only cost you $20 after tax (assuming you're on the 30% tax bracket). that way the victims get more money.

pauly, can you please advise how members can donate through opelaus, rather than through bank/redcross etc.
i am unable to attend the meet, i did think about driving down considering the situation, but its really not viable and instead i would like to add towards opelaus' amount raised.

Jay Pauly and I spoke about this last night.
If you can't be at the meet, then the easiest way to donate would be directly.
I will be dontating directly myself.

How about we (Mornington Peninsula folk) just meet at the car park that we'll have as the final destination on the Peninsula. Still to determine the actual car park. Since the car park may be in National Park land, a small charge may apply ($2 or there abouts).

And Paul, there's not really anywhere to stop with a lot of cars along the way, so I think just make a trip from the first meet point to the final destination.

PS.. I know the area roughly.

frankston beach car park as a 2nd meetup point?

then up to mornington pier and down along the coast line to dromana
up arthurs seat
then head down to rye sorrento and cape schank

It is a good idea... IF it was just a cruise of say 10 cars. But this has the potential for the 30+ cars and doing a lot of stops is a pain. Frankston is a bitch to muck around with and Mornington you won't get near it as that whole car park will be being used by boats and boat trailers. I'm not going to be cruising on this part of the cruise, but that's my thoughts.

Plus it would take forever to get to Sorrento with all those stops, keeping in mind there has to be enough time for the run back as the cruise won't be finishing at Sorrento.

I understand it would be horrific for everyone to have to stop and park etc, especially if we get as many cars as we hope, but just as an idea are there any long slip lanes we could just file into that the others could meet us in? Would mean only like a 5 min stop as the others joined on the end of the line? Just an idea.
Also with a trail of this length, we're going to get split up, a lot...so everyone bring your CB's!!! :)

nuggz
11th February 2009, 10:30 AM
if those points are too hard

Sunnyside road in Mt eliza is pretty quiet and can hold the cars
or else a carpark near bunnings should be able to on a sunday

then driving down past the mornington pier (not actually stopping) and down the coast line down to rye and cut down to cape schank

arthurs seat can be on the way back for those who want

hazrd
11th February 2009, 10:36 AM
with the amount of cars coming, it will be awkward in any carpark/roadside/wherever

no knowledge on the mornington area, but nuggz's idea of sunnyside road souds good...

Ok. This is the meet point at Flinders. This is the meet point for Mornington Peninsula members, or those who will be in the area. It's also the destination for the members who meet at St. Kilda.

Shaded red area is the car park to meet in.

Most definitely look forward to the pics of this one :)

As for original topic, my work also has set up it's own donation fund and I've already contributed to that and am thinking of visiting the blood bank for a blood donation, as I've heard/read this is just as, if not more helpful ATM than giving money for all the burn victims needing blood desperately...an idea for others to consider too :)
