Yeah if a person was on the foot path or waiting for a bus there would have been a bigger problem as there are 3 bus stops right next to it it was very lucky indeed. Also i only just got out of the car and was about 4 or 5 parks away if i was getting out and the car a little later i probably would have been dead or in intensive car with internal injuries and broke pelvis ect ect

Ouch! Feel for you mate.

But, that just reinforces what I always tell my missus: "I will NEVER take my car to Arndale!"

Also reinforces what people have been saying for years: "Volvo drivers can't drive to nuts!"

Hope it all gets fixed and back on the road again real quick.

Also: Worries me what little is holding our wheels on. It's obviously smacked your car into the kerb rather hard, but I am surprised (nay, concerned) that carpark speeds can rip off a rear wheel!

Mate that really sucks!!!

Anyone who mistakes the accelerator for the brake long enough to do that SHOULD NOT be driving a car. Like Vectracious said, what if there was a child standing there or someone crossing the road! If you cant perform a simple task like parking then get off the road!!!

Best of luck with the insurance claim, after seeing the damage i hope they write it off for you :)

At my old job this old dude got confused between the brake and accelerator and managed to side swipe the tram, mount the footpath, drive past about 3 shop openings and end up wedging his Camry between the wall of the bakery and veranda posts outside the bakery. It was a busy shopping strip, it was just pure luck that no one was walking out of any of the shops at the time.

When I heard something happening I started running out of the dispensary - so by the time I ran to the front door maybe 10 seconds had passed - the guy still had his foot buried and the wheels were still spinning in reverse - car was already wedged up against the bakery.

I felt sorry for the poor old bugger, but he shouldnt have been driving. SImple.

+1 for replace not repair.
its definately a concern that hub snapping off.
the old bitty really must have been doing a decent speed.
the only other time ive seen a hub snapped off was on a cortina and it was doing about 100km/h and hit a tree...well it was the axle that snapped on the cortina (rwd of course) but still, its scary that yours snapped so easily...

at least you're safe.

Hope they can repair the car to near perfect.

make sure you get the car repaired at the best repairer in SA, not just any old place.

Your insurer should be ok about repairing it at the repairer of your choice since they are not paying for it.

the intresting thing I can see from here is that your wheels were rather stong. rather than them just being ripped apart they ripped part of the car apart.

I would have thought the wheel would have buckled and bent instead of ripping straight out

I bet you'll have a different view when you're old and wrinkly! PPl make mistakes, not every oldie can't drive. Just like not every young driver is a hoon. But I do beleive the laws need changing in this area - as they have with younger drivers (P plates, restrictions on what you can drive, curfews, alcohol limits ect) - maybe regular testing, not only skills based but also medicals once very 2 years over a certain age and more regularly as you get older.

Shay
5th January 2009, 02:36 PM
i agree or even a 2-yearly driving test or something to test competency and make sure they're up to date with road rules as they change so often i reckon WA's new P plate laws are pretty good, and thats comin from a P plater. and we still dont have power restrictions or NA restriction.

That's bad luck, but as some have said before, your lucky no one was hurt!! I'll always remember the learner driver in NSW who accelerated instead of braking and ran over like 8 or so people, killed 2, put a baby in acoma, and another lost a leg so yeah the car can be replaced, lives can't!!

With the wheel breaking off, i've seen other late model euro FWD's do the same thing, must be in it's design to break suspension arms rather than bend the chassis, much easier to replace trailing arms!!

Thanks again peeps:) Yeah with the whole old people driving issue my dad is 74 and he has to have a medical every year, but im not to sure if thats because he wears glasses ?? I also agree they should do some testing ect . My car is going to the best repairer in s.a. so i think (Des Higgins Motor Bodies ) if they chose to repair it, he does not use bog but apparently he lead fills or something like that the main thing is he replaces everything rather than fixing it my bro had a tiny rear end hit and it ended up costing 7k in repairs thank f#$% for insurance the bad part is if they fix it i am going to be out of a car for the time it is in there and its going to be a while as the parts will all have to come from opel  It sucks but i hope they just scrap it, gonna get 41k if they do got the wheels and stereo insured it would be nice if i could take it out .

Im not to sure i guess it all depends on how good they fix it as she is not to keen on the idea of a damaged car, i was thinking the evo over a calais v as it would only cost me a little bit more if i got a pay out. they will fix that. i have similar damage with a accident ( the snapped off wheel part). i didnt have the body damage thou. got all my left hand suspension replaced and the end bill was 9g. and the cars only worth 13g

yeah i thought that it would blow out to cost a lot i would not have really mind if the accident was my fault but i was not even in the car its bull shit

get it back after insurer has fixed it, wait for a few months and have it disappear :D

Ha ha couldnt do that now that would be illegal lol

Dave! Sorry to see what happened.....It's definitely a shame and it's easy to see how things can change in an instant.

All I say is bloody milk!

Have you had any quotes yet?

Dam thats a bit of bad luck , Even more so that you were parked thats the problem with Coupes when they had been hit in the back they are a pain to fix. Do you know if they are going to cut out your rear quarter and weld a new panel in?

I have never been a fan of that i would rather a new car because i would feel the ridgity of the car had been compromised but thats just me and my train of thought. I hope it all works out well for your car. sad to see such a nice car damaged due to the careless driving of others.

Ps ive always wondered who owned the S.A OPEL plates lol now i know , i want them lol

Hows the repairs going. Did they lend you a hire car whilst the astras off the road or you just riding your bike around.
