View Full Version : Angel Eyes - LED vs Normal bulbs

long story short:-
- one of my bulbs in the rings in my angel eyes died
- replaced all of them with LED bulbs. didn't like it - it created bright spots.
- months later, the LEDs started dieing too - 3 all up.

now unfortunately the normal bulbs (t5 286 wedge type) r so rare to find, n if i do find them, they don't have the reflective hat coating.

i had no spare of either - so that meant i didn't have enough LEDs or normal bulbs.

the end result = use both. :D
high beam rings = LED bulbs
low beam rings = normal bulbs

i must say - i like the "mixed" look. wat do u guys think?

Yeah that looks good
(probs better in real life when there's no lens flare)

Hmmmm, sorry JR but I disagree with the rest thus far...

I think it looks all wrong and even a little weird IMHO.

I'd go with either one or the other.

Also FYI with 'normal' LED's you will not get a normal spread of light as you go with incandescent or halogen bulbs or other gas filled bulbs, that's why you had that 'spotting' happening, their light was being beamed forwards only...

There are LED's designed to spread their light beam, these will usually be distinguished by a flat or blunt nose design and some even have a 'concaved' centre flat top to them.

I have a set of these in amber for my side repeaters on my Calibra and they spread their light alot better than standard LED's...

The normal incandescent T5 or other wedge type bulbs usually 1.2watt can be found at GMH service/spare parts centres as these are one of the most common dash dial bulbs used out there and believe it or not, they are very reasonably priced compared to nearly everything else from GMH spares.

Hope that helps :)

i actually agree with Ange for once :p

one or the other. the whiter led ring looks best

yup - i know. n these r exactly the ones i got. they have an inverted concave top, designed to spread the light "sideways".

unfortunately the led ones r taller than the bulbs, n hence sit right up against the inside of the ring. dats why it creates the hotspots.

u've got the same angel eyes as me - try it for urself.
trust me - i had looked for months. even tried two different types of concaved leds. no luck.

i can get the normal bulb types - no problemo. however using these normal bulbs will also create hot spots. wat i need is the ones with a reflective cap on the top of the globe - that's wats came with the angel eyes, n currently in there.
this type prevents forward lighting, n hence the hotspots.

nah - they're depo angel eyes...including the internals.

Yes they are a little taller, but I'm sure you could source shorter ones from LED manufacturers, probably take alot of research time though...

With the normal incandescents, get yourself a pressure pack of chrome spray paint, cover up the bulbs properly and give them that 'block out cap' yourself, that's what I'd do ;)

The other material/paint you could use is 'cold galv'. give that a try, I'm sure the result will be more than good enough :)

It'll take some work, but done properly the end result should work just fine :)

As for mine, I like the look the stock incandescent bulbs give, I'm not going to bother with LED's...if they eventually blow, I'll be doing as I mentioned above to rectify the situation :)

Mine are FK's BTW...

Let me know how you go :)

and the r35 is better than any porker, but we will leave that for another thread ;)

you have the philips bulbs, they glow a blueish white dont they?
would suit the led angles much better

i too like the incandescent bulbs - i've never liked the LEDs in this scenario.
just thought i'd try them out while i was at it. "u never never know, if u never never go" :D

i thought about doing my own "capping" job - just never went all in, n didn't have the time. but in the future, i'll b doing just that. might actually do it soon, so i have some spares ready ;)
i'd rather use incandescent bulbs than led bulbs. i can't b bothered finding the right length led bulbs.

"cold galv" huh...hmmm, will try that out.
thanks

nope, none of my phillips bulbs have a blueish white tinge.
high beams = standard phillips bulbs
low beams = 5000k hid
foglight = phillips xtreme (non-tinted)

infact the incandescent bulbs would suit my setup more.....i think :)
