Just went to fill up at the Shell near my work on the way home.

And the Vpower is now 13 cents more per litre now WHAT THE?

Asked behind the counter and she said its been like that for a few days now, i said well i will no longer be getting it from Shell anymore. She said that Caltex will be the same price, as Shell supply Caltex which i didnt know. Does that mean that Vortex 98 is the same as Vpower?

you can't even get Vortex 98 where I live, though I only use 95 so It doesn't matter.

Conversely it seems like Shell only sells VPower 98 up here (no 95) and it's always been about 10-15 cents more as far as I can remember.

I doubt that's the case yet here in Melb. SSSHoon ???

I use both of those fuels and always noticed a big difference between the 2 and up until recently I still notice it !!!

Both my turbo vert and N/A Calibra run noticeably better with the shell V-Power (formally Optimax) than they do with the Caltex 98 stuff...

The only reason I still get the Caltex 98 is because I've always got plenty of those 4cents off Safeway vouchers, but I still always fill my turbo verts tank with V-Power.

If that's a fact that Caltex will be using the same stuff (ie: V-Power 98) in the future, that'll be a good thing for me :)

its more funny how ppl shoot there mouth off when they think they know everything too, and then get shot down by others...gotta love it.

Yeah i use both fuels also, and find them very different indeed, i prefer Vpower in the SSS as it seems to go better and get a few more klm out of it then the Vortex98.

Was using the Vortex though as we also had the dockets, then the wife got a card thingo so no more dockets and i went back to Vpower which was normally 10c pl more then reg unleaded(vortex98 was about 10cpl more then reg unleaded). Now today the Vpower was 13cpl more and the attended said that is the new pricing from Shell and all Shells will be the same. The Shell is easy as its right near my work and easy for me.

I think they are just loosing too much on the cheaper fuels so they are jacking up the Vpower.

They ain't losing shit...a barrel is $60 dollars now compared to couple weeks back when it was almost $150...yet we pay only 20c less....go figure!

Yeah but remember that back then the Australian Dollar was essentially 50% better then what it is now.

people will throw all kinds of figures about which fuel is better out of the 3 - but in my real life experience, I seem to get slightly better fuel economy out of the V-power than BP - otherwise the car feels exactly the same.

Haven't tried the Caltex 98 for ages because the servo near me always seems to be out of it and they dont accept AMEX...

cheers for that :) just never really been a shell fan... some servos look a bit dodgy. I'll give it a try though :)

You'd be surprised exactly how little the current cost of a barrel of oil and the current currency valuation have to do with the price of fuel at the pumps. We have two specialised energy / energy derivatives trading desks where i work in Singapore and Sydney. Trust me, big oil isn't losing a cent either way. We do alot of business with/for them and they are doing quite nicely out of the recent price movements. Both the downward push in crude and the fall in the AUD...

Look at the record profits posted for EVERY oil company in the past 2 years. Now the are unwinding their currency positions and buying (averaging in) into the current crude price.

The closest estimation either the oil companies and/or analysts can give for the actual cost of production (in Aust) for a litre of petrol (98 Octane)...Approximately 30 cents...
