Ever since an R35 (and pictured here in the GT-R thread and my avatar) was done several months ago, I've started seeing alot more exotic cars going for the matt black look using similar material and process, ie: matt film all over covering...

Some look awesome, some not so great.

Here's a Ferrari 599 done over, IMHO it looks fantastic in matt black...

If this trend continues, I reckon we might start seeing manufacturers offering matt black as a colour choice on some makes/models ???

the matt black looks ok, different, and i like different, but id get bored of the colour very quickly.

im not usually into yellow paint, but yellow looks good on ferraris too.
though it depends on the models.

i have been looking into matt black paint, and honestly flat paints are so hard to have its not funny, the pannels have to be perfect, so i guess ill never get it

however there is a compay that sells paints called hot rod flats, they have loads of colours in flat finish, some of them would look awesome on the right car, but would probably look like bog or undercoat on a old comodore or falcon

I read an article some time back that had BMW (I think it was) experimenting with matt body paint - not just black, but other colors as well. The biggest problem they had to overcome was how to keep it clean.

Nissan(?) also has available (Japan only) a self-repairing paint. Supposed to be able to self-remove light scratches, etc., from the paint surface. Don't remember how it works.

These two bits of info from my memory only, sorry I don't have the articles to back it up, and it was a long time ago I read them.

But . . . back on track . . . can't say I'm a fan of the matt finish. Seen it before (pics) on exotics, etc., and it really didn't ring my bells.

Yes, that's true with all the above Ian :)

The 'scratch proof' paint is actually a polymer finish - like powder coat - which is rubbery and basically expands on itself to close cuts or scratches, much like a paper cutting board.

The new GT-R has ceramic content in it's clear cost to resist scratching too, but using hard surface finish as a counter to it, I think Ferrari does the same...

Matt colours will definitely start appearing form manufactures in future, but I think the whole 'MATT' title is misleading as it's actually got some shine or gloss to it - it is actually a satin or sheen finish, not pure matt :)
