View Full Version : My respray (lots of pics 56k beware) **UDATED 31/07/04**

Mr Cali

My car was in a minor accident a couple of months ago, and since it was getting repaired under insurance I thought I'd take the opportunity to get a full respray. It will be repainted in Candy Apple Blue and fitted with a kit.

It has been 2 weeks so far, but they have been waiting for some metal parts to come back and they have been short staff and also the late arrival of the kit.
Besides this guy is very perdantic and wants things done right. All holes have been filled with sheet metal then welded and they have used as little body filler as possible.

New door skin and rear quarter been fixed.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v254/Mrcali/Respray/door.jpg

Third light boot holes filled
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v254/Mrcali/Respray/thirdlight.jpg

Indicators filled
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v254/Mrcali/Respray/Indicators.jpg

Bonnet Badge filled
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v254/Mrcali/Respray/Bonnetbadge.jpg

A custome plate made from metal was premade so that the Sparco fuel cap can sit flush to the body. this was then welded in place.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v254/Mrcali/Respray/Fuelcap.jpg

The panel between the lights that I got from Germany, didn't quite fill the gap and was a little crooked. Being the person he is this wasn't good enough, so he had a panel made up from sheet metal to be welded on. Alot of work but well worth it.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v254/Mrcali/Respray/lightpanel2.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v254/Mrcali/Respray/lightpanelside.jpg
Still needs minor work to get it sitting perfect, notice it sits a tiny bit higher then the rear light on the right.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v254/Mrcali/Respray/lightpanel.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v254/Mrcali/Respray/lightpanel1.jpg

Moving the number plate to the rear bar was a little harder then I though. Initially I just wanted them to cut it then make the mounting plate out of fibre glass, but being a fussing bastard that he is, he convinced me that this method will eventually crack. We were going to do the above then make a mould and then make a full fibre glass bar but that required a bit more $$$. So he called around and got a plastic welder to do the job.

Cutting the bar for the opening
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v254/Mrcali/Respray/Cuttingplatepanel.jpg

We had to find a number plate panel from another car with the same grade plastic to cut apart. The doner was a Pulsar front bar.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v254/Mrcali/Respray/Pulsarbar.jpg

Welding the new piece in place.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v254/Mrcali/Respray/Weldingplatepanel.jpg

A closer look
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v254/Mrcali/Respray/platepanel.jpg

And this is what it looks like back on the car. Not quite finished, still need to make the side bits for the panel.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v254/Mrcali/Respray/barbackon.jpg

Thats it so far, untill the next update.... stay tuned ;)

Thats absolutely awesome man.

I'm on the edge of my seat waiting for it to be completed!

To tell you the truth, candy apple blue is a beautiful colour, and I was actually considering it for my astra at one stage (money's such a discriminating thing).

It's great to see things being done properly as well, and no short cuts being taken.

This car will be sure to shame many "show-going" cars and stop a few people in their tracks.

Now time to update those wheels to bigger blinger items 8)

Mr Cali
28th July 2004, 10:39 AM
Exclusive Colour near Merrylands in Sydney. They are well known amongst the show car scene and have modified and sprayed many show cars in the past and have a few in the making at the moment.

autumn acid: the Wheels are 18" already, how much bigger do u want me to go

Candy is just a term for the effect, same shiniest of Cany Red but in blue instead.

This is the closest colour I could find, look at the corner of the front bar for the candy effect.

Anonymous

jass, candy blue is a totally different colour from metallic blue. Its a really vibrant blue (considering brand etc) and has a lot of depth. In essence, the paint looks wet and deep.

There are near Merrylands about 10mins from Parramatta, give Louie a call on 0413581099 and tell him Tai with the Calibra sent you.

The guy with the Lifestyle shirt is my mate Adam who now works there. He used to work for lifestyle and is one of Australia's best audio install person. He has worked on heaps of show cars, and most recently completed the install and all fibre glassing on the Osman'a yellow convertable WRX.

28th July 2004, 05:57 PM
Candy effect is a 3 layer pearl, which is TOTALLY different to metalic paint...

First up they prep and putty the car up then the colour goes on (so in this case its a blue base), then the Blue pearl goes over the top and then the clear coat.

The painter will do numerous coats of each layer depending on the effect they are trying to achieve.
So you cant just walk into a shop and ask for the colour candy apple red, blue, green, it is more of an effect than a colour.

By the way.........the car is going to LOOK hot  , I love the idea and the work they have put into it... congratulations on finding such a fussy painter...... :D wish they were all like that

Mr Cali

Yes they do, can can even make a custome one of a kind kit for you if you like.

Just to give you an idea, this car was in the workshop at the time, you would never guess that it's a Proton Satria under all of that.

Update time.....

Bonnet extension added. They refused to use a fiber glass item cause it would crack if someone grabbed it the wrong way when opening the bonnet. Instead they fabricated one out of metal.

Just after it was welded

As you can see it makes the front lights look a lot more agressive.

Yeah, the welded bonnet extension would be far better than the fiberglass option.

Notice how the cali with the scissor doors bonnet looks kind of cheap with the gap between extension and original bonnet?

Also, mr cali, looks like you've been inspired by the cali with the scissor doors... AME wheels, bonnet extension 8)

It's actually a bit of coincedence, I've had the mags for awhile now, and bonnet extension is a must for the Cali

It's about time I re-hatched this thread

Well it turn out to be more then just a respray, it's more a never ending story  .
One thing led to another and I decided to do more and more to it as time went by till eventually it turned into a show car project. Some of you might think it's a bit OTT but thats what happens when you mod a car to this extent, some love it and some hate it

I've been updating on the Aust Calibra site as I went along but thought I'd update you guys on it too.

Was hoping to finish it for Sydney Autosalon but it's getting to a stage where its touch and go if I'm going to make it or not. There's a few surprises that I'm keeping under wraps for now, that I will reveal once completed.

Here's the saga:

Ok it's been a little while so... update time :)

Not too much has been done, but the car has now been hi-filled and pretty much rubbed back.

I guess its about time for another update.

I know its been a while, there's been a few things that I'm been tring to source so work has slowed down a little.
The car went in the booth yesterday and got some coats of paint. It still needs to be rubbed down again and then hi-flowed

Here are some pics anyway.
NOTE: I couldnt reproduce the colour with my camera because of all the diff colour pearls, when I used the flash it changed the colour. but the pics will give you an idea of it.

Took more parts of the engine apart today.

Got all the pistons out and again to my surprise absolutely no signs of wear. The pistons are in perfect condition only had build up on the top. the Cylinders are in as new condition too very impressed :)

well as I mentioned earlier, I have the forged pistons in my engine, for those who were wondering where to look and what it looks like here are some pics.

Found this problem, I had my water pump changed about a year ago and when putting the new timing belt on I thought it was a little odd. Had a closer look and the pulley teeth on the pump was completly diff from the belt teeth. Looked at my old belt and the teeth have all been damaged. Lucky for me I did this now, that belt could have gone at anytime.

As you can see the old pump teeth are further spaced apart and are round, the new ones a closer and V grooved.

Was a little suprised to see that the new pump had a plastic impeller though.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v254/Mrcali/Respray/waterpump.jpg

Took these last week but didnt get a chance to post it.

We didn't want to scratch the engine bay so decided to put the engine back in by a different method.

Jacked up the front and unboilted the crossmember.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v254/Mrcali/Respray/Jackedup.jpg

Bolted the gear box to the engine and the cross member together.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v254/Mrcali/Respray/frontend.jpg

Slid the engine under the car and dropped the car over the engine.

And waalaaa the engine is back in, with no scratches to be seen.

I changed my mind again and decided I dont want the side mouldings , meaning the removal of all the metal studs, rub down again and most of the car resprayed.
I know I know it's alot of work to do but its what I want and I don't like to compromise.

On the bright side I may have scored a sponsorship for a new set of mags, 19s chromies ;)

The car has now been fully rubbed back and all metal studs removed, filled and then hi-filled, as you can see in these pics.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v254/Mrcali/Respray/Side.jpg

Pretty much the rear quarter, doors and front gaurds have to be painted again.

I also installed the short shifter from B&M and the gear linkage from Rally nuts. It's unbelievable how short the gear shift is now with this combination.

Well my interior has been sent off for the retrim, the body work is all done, and tomorrow my car leaves the work shop on a flat bed truck to my mates place where the final touches will be put in place.

The airbrushing was a last minute decision, because I couldn't put the bonnet vent that I wanted to fit due to structural braces, I decided that the Cali bonnet was to big and flat to leave plain. My initial thoughts was ghost flames, then I changed my mind again and wanted tribal designs. After 3 - 4 different designs were dratfed I didnt like the look of them, so went back to my initial idea.
For those of you who don't what ghost flames are, it's basically airbrushed flames using the same colour paint as the rest of the car and adding more pearl to it. The effect is that under sunlight and strong lighting the flames will appear the rest of the time, you wont be able to see it.

Anyway I'll let the pics do the talking.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v254/Mrcali/Respray/MaskedFlames.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v254/Mrcali/Respray/Sideflamedrawing.jpg
The car is masked up and a free hand sketch has been done

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v254/Mrcali/Respray/Cuttingflames.jpg
It then gets cut up, again free hand with a scalple.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v254/Mrcali/Respray/CutFlames.jpg
Nearly there

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v254/Mrcali/Respray/SprayingFlames.jpg
It is then sprayed with the pearl coats and fades out towards the front of the bonnet.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v254/Mrcali/Respray/Unmasked.jpg
When unmasked, this is what it looks like

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v254/Mrcali/Respray/Clearcoated.jpg
Then 5 coats of clear is applied on top.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v254/Mrcali/Respray/Flames.jpg
The end result is stunning if I do say so myself ;)

This is the gauge pod that we fabricated out of fibreglass, it will be mounted into the dash and the whole dash to be trimmed in leather.

Got my rear seats back today and I've very impressed at the finish. Front seats are also done but my car didnt have enough room to take both.
Only stuff up was that the trimmer broke the plastic release button on the rear seats, now I need to get a new one from somewhere. Anyone know where I can get one, I'll appreciate it.

Not a fan of (non-natural) flames, but it's done really tastefully. :)

he has done alot of the work himself, i think he even works for a panel shop now so he has learnt how to do most of this stiuff for himself.

he bough a gtr a while ago and i think that has slowed him down even further on the cally, but i hope it gets finished one day, and then i will buy it off him after it finishes the show circuit ;)

Hahahaha G'Day guys no I just pop around time to time sometimes couple or few months apart and sometimes years apart just to see what's going on here these days :)

Despite the lack of activity here compared to once upon a time, it's good to see it still exists but this forum seems almost flat lined :(

I've still got the vert and it's still as new as ever and still keeping it despite all the newer cars I've had and still have since.

Hope all is well with you guys and still living the dream :D
