View Full Version : New Exhaust?

I started looking at the exhaust options available for my car...then I realised that I don't actually have a clue about them! So I've just got a couple of newbie questions if anyone is able to help me?

I was wondering:

What sort of gains can you expect from getting a new exhaust?
How much roughly it can cost?
Is there such a thing as a subtle sounding one?

To be honest, it's the sound of the things that's always put me off them. A nice loud exhaust is good on a big car, but on a small car they can make you look like a bit of a chav ! (This is what a chav drives - http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/4253/scarqb3.jpg)

It's a 1.8 Barina SRi by the way. Any advice really appreciated, thanks :D

hi Taffy,

you've got two choices, in order of decreasing performance gain:

1) extractors + cat-back (also called a full exhaust)
2) cat-back

if you're wondering what sort of gains you'll make on each:

http://www.bestmufflers.com/Information/Custom%20Systems/custom_exhaust_system_holden%20_barina_sri.htm (http://www.bestmufflers.com/Information/Custom%20Systems/custom_exhaust_system_holden%20_barina_sri.htm)

it is possible to get one that sounds tasteful but still gives your car a little bit more poke. just don't go too large with your pipe size and put in good quality resonators and a good quality backbox. most aftermarket exhausts will still be louder than stock though.

in terms of pricing, i think you can get a custom full exhaust made for about $1800. the problem with our cars is that there isn't much of an aftermarket for them here - if you want direct fit parts they need to be imported (expensive!) or you have to go custom.

hope that helps :)

btw - i've got one on my SRi. theres a description of my experiences with it in the members cars section

that's the best mufflers one above i think :) and it was a custom job, but they might still have the template for it

LOL

it might actually have a turbo in it! that could be a front mounted intercooler peeking through the grill, and it might just have a cold air intake in that birdhouse on the bonnet :D

I had a full system installed Extractors, cat and muffler installed for $1100.. the loudness really comes down to the Rear Muffler Cannon(mine is too big and loud i want to change it)

Full system really does boost performance i experanced at least 10-15% increase in my high end power at about 3-4k revs it really does pull hard. best updgrade i have done.. add the muffler and a Air Filter (K&N) you will experiance a very nice increase in performance..

Thanks for all your replies - really helpful. And I had a look in the member's section of this site too...So I've got some ideas now which I'll get started on once I've finished opelising (although I haven't even got round to starting yet!)

The bonnet stripes on the link that Lithium posted up are really cool.
