Just for fun, let's see how we go calculating the "bang for buck" (BFB) coefficient of our cars.
Use official manufacturer figures only.
Power (P) in kW
Average fuel consumption per 100km (F); Diesel engines will increase fuel economy figure by 15% to allow for higher fuel cost; petrol cars using PULP will increase the figure by 10% for the same reason
Car Price coefficient (CP) introduced as fractions of $100k; for instance my car has a RRP of $29,990 so it will have a price coefficient of 0.299; try to use RRP price before adding options that don't have an impact on performance, such as leather and B&O stereo.
Time coefficient (T) representing every second for 0-100km/h time under 15 seconds; for instance, the official time for my oiler is 8.9 seconds, therefore it has a time coefficient of 15 - 8.9 = 6.1 secondsSo the formula will be like this:

BFB = (P X T) / (F X CP )

As you can see is not only about speed and power but rather about performance for money, for both car acquisition and fuel. Imagine this calculated for a Gallardo :)

My car:
Astra CDTi 6 sp Manual
110 kW (P=110)
6.0 l/100km Diesel (F = 6.0 X 1.15 = 6.9)
RRP $29,990 ( CP = 0.299)
0-100 km/h time: 8.9 seconds (T = 6.1)
BFB = (110 X 6.1) / (6.9 X 0.299) = 325

So my car's BFB is 325!

Where did you get this from... did you just make it up?

MY05 Subaru WRX 5-spd man - BFB 363
2008 Honda CR-V Luxury 6 speed - BFB 149

I made it up :) Sure, it could have been done before but if I would have taken it from somewhere there would be a source indicated in my first post...

Feel free to shoot suggestions or critics should you have any!

Wow, that REX has some high BFB!

EL BURITO

My car:
Ford Fiesta XR4 5 sp Manual
110 kW (P=110)
7.4 l/100km PULP (F = 6.0 X 1.1 = 8.14)
RRP $24,990 ( CP = 0.24990)
0-100 km/h time: 7.9 seconds (T = 7.1)
BFB = (110 X 7.1) / (8.14 X 0.24990) = 781/ 2.034186

So my car's BFB is 383.937

So if my bad maths is right then the calibra is BFB218 lol

(P x T) / (F x CP)
P=100
T=9.5
F=12.5
CP=0.349
100 x 9.5 = 950
12.5 x 0.349 = 4.3625

950 / 4.3625 = 218

the original prices for these are the killers!

Imagine this calculated for a Gallardo :)

Imagine this calculated for a Gallardo Superleggera
390 kW (P=390)
17 l/100km PULP (F = 17 X 1.1 = 18.7)
RRP $489,243 ( CP = 4.89234)
0-100 km/h time: 4.2 seconds (T = 11.2)
BFB = (390 X 11.2) / (18.7 X 4.89234) = 4368/ 91.486758

So = 47.7446
Not very good (all figures from Top gear Aus edition)

i am unsure of a few specs so i got my specs from a nrma review
http://www.mynrma.com.au/cps/rde/xchg/mynrma/hs.xsl/Holden_Astra_2001_car_review.htm

2004 astra classic ts / g.
mine is a sedan, review car was a hatch i think.
90kw (i thought it was 92, but oh well)
7.7L/100km petrol (truthfully not sure but i use e10)
10.5sec 0-100 (i could swear i reach it a hell of alot quicker, say 7s, but ive used the 10.5 for my BFB and im probably wrong with the 7s anyway.
$18,990 without extras

(P 90 x T 4.5) = 405
(F 8.4 x CP 0.18990) = 1.59516
405 / 1.59516 = BFB 253.89

hope i done it right.

My car:
Subaru MY08 Sti
221 kW (P=221)
10.9 l/100km PULP (F = 10.9 X 1.1 = 11.99)
RRP $59990 ( CP = 0.59990)
0-100 km/h time: 4.8 seconds (T = 10.2)
BFB = (221 X 10.2) / (11.99 X 0.5999) = 313

So my car's BFB is 313.

man that price is a killer...

That ADR test for fuel consumption is such a load of shit - the Official consumption for my car is 10L/100km - never heard of a WRX getting anywhere near that in real life - my average is 11.75L/100km since I bought the car. And I doubt you're getting 10.9 with the STi........

you can doubt all you like, but my cars lifetime average is 11.1, and thats with 2 trackdays and alot of 'spirited' driving.

The 'I' mode on the si drive make the car feel as strong as a bag of wet kittens, but it does work for fuel economy. I am averaging about 450km a tank...and my record was 620 on a long trip (which was dissapointing)

Damm my car going by stock specs is

91ron fuel its 279.35

98ron fuel its 250.87

I have used it on 98ron since i bought the car.

If i put it in with the current 13.5l p 100k i currently getting its only 190 LoL.

The missus GTI comes in at 350 so not bad i guess.

Should try adding in the cost of performance mods and the additional power to the equation and see whats happens... ;)

Would still likely beat a Lamborghini or a Porsche for BFB...

Oops, forgot that you had Si Drive - I'm was speaking 07 and earlier - which just have one setting and I have not heard of an STi owner getting less than about 12-13 combined, and a regular rex getting less than about 11-12 (and they are tuned as well!!)

So the formula will be like this:

BFB = (P X T) / (F X CP )

My car:
Astra CDTi 6 sp Manual
110 kW (P=110)
6.0 l/100km Diesel (F = 6.0 X 1.15 = 6.9)
RRP $29,990 ( CP = 0.299)
0-100 km/h time: 8.9 seconds (T = 6.1)
BFB = (110 X 6.1) / (6.9 X 0.299) = 325

My car:
VW Polo GTi 5 sp manual
110kW .... P = 110
7.9 l/100km PULP .... F = 7.9 X 1.10 = 8.7
RRP $26,990 .... CP = 0.269
0 - 100km/h : 8.2 secs .... T = 6.8

BFB = (110 X 6.8) / (8.7 X 0.269) = 748 / 2.34 = 319

RRP $23,990 ( CP = 0.239)
0-100km/h time: 10.1 seconds (T = 4.9)
BFB = (103 x 4.9) / (8.14 x 0.239) = 259

I still love my baby!

Keep in mind my car is a true daily driver. plenty of mundane to/from work driving, driving with the missus etc. I would assume most sti's arent daily driven, hence they get caned more often and have a higher average fuel consumption. I filled up last night, i will take it super easy on this tank and see if i can get the avg under 10l.

Theres about a million threads on the WRX club Im part of about fuel consumption and theres a lot of people with <07 STi's who drive them as daily drivers and the majority have got shit fuel economy. Despite what you might think I'm not talking out of my arse. Maybe they improved the 08's fuel economy, maybe Si drive does make a heap of diffeence - if you ran your car in Sports or Sports # for a tank of daily driving, you probably won't get 11's or maybe even 12's for fuel consumtion. (unless you do a lot of highway commuting)

BFB = (P X T) / (F X CP )

My car:
TS Astra SRi N/A Manual
110 kW (P=110)
7.3 L/100km PULP (F = 7.3 X 1.1 = 8.03)
RRP $28,990 (CP = 0.289)
Official 0-100 km/h time: 10.4 seconds (T = 4.6)
(110 X 4.6) / (8.03 X 0.289) = 506 / 2.32
BFB = 218

So my car's BFB is 218... seems exceptionally low... i think i got all the figures correct

What a GREAT little tool DH, something similar to this is what I used when I bought by barina originally, but I took into consideration the current market value of the vehicle. It also must still have had factory warranty.
Just out of curiosity with my original purchase price calculated in instead, at the time I bought it BFB=402.8 BOOYAH!!!

Well, you can tweak the formula to allow for the 3 year Red Book resale value. Heck, imagine going to a dealer and say " You need to take at least $3,200 off the price cuz the BFB factor is under my target" :D

The figures for supercars give you an idea how much you pay for the hype and exclusivity, isn't it? That's why I bet the GTR is the by far the best sub 4.0 seconds to 60mph stock car on the planet!
