OK, here it goes, what brand new car would you buy for a 55 years old couple?

They live around 50km from Hobart, Tasmania (long climbing, winding roads)
They work part time only so average 10 to 15,0000 km per year is maximum what they would travel.

their budget is about $22,000 AUD.

What would you recommend;

Make\Model, 3\5 door, auto\manual, 3yrs or plus extended warranty ???

lets say you are buying it for you grandparents, what would you choose ???

So if for my gramps and he has 22K to spend

If he wanted auto, I would go the Honda Jazz Vti with the 7 speed auto as it is still a fuel economical as the Manuel and can get 6L per 100km but can get up a hill if u need it too.

If Manuel I would be going Toyota Yaris YRS. Its Toyota it will be reliable, It will last for ever and once again it is good on petrol. the 1.5 will be better than the 1.3 thru the hills.

there is my 2c

New Mitsubishi Lancer GL auto...

On road for around that price, 4 door sedan - fairly large dimensions, lots of space inside, but still a medium sized car.

Very easy to drive in auto, with good all round visibility in the rear quarters.

Very safe, with all the latest safety standards.

Very good mileage from the new N/A MIVEC 2.0ltr petrol engine.

Excellent/best standard factory waranty with 10 years engine and drivetrain cover and 5 years structural warranty - no need to pay extra for any extended warranty contracts !

For an older driver(s) I would look for known reliability, cheap running costs AND good visibility.

Narrows it down to the Jap/Korean brands I think. I would discount the Lancer as rearward visibility seems rather shite.

As has been suggested before:

Yaris (sedan?), Corolla and probably the i30. All are safe and will run on regular cats piss ULP.

I would recommend they try and get one with the optional safety packs (full 6 airbags on corolla/yaris, + esp on the i30) and rear parking sensors.

If they want a bigger car they could look at the Kia Magentis... lots of deals on that car and its basically a Hyundai Sonata underneath.

Go for the AH8.5 Astra.

ESP is now standard on all Astras and they can buy the 60th Anniversary model with 16's and Foggies (Tasmania is a place that would actually need them).

Hyundai I30 as mentioned by others, also a very good choice :)

I've checked out the new Lancer sedans, rearward visibility is very good through the back window and it has nice large side mirrors...similar to a Nissan Tiida - which would be another good choice with all the mentioned criteria for an older couple :)

The only prob you'd 'probably' have in terms of visibility with the new Lancer, is that it's not easy to see where the bonnet or nose ends of the front of the car from the drivers seat...however it's not something to worry about and alot of newer car designs have this same situation because of the sweeping design of front ends...

I've driven both the 1.5L Yaris hatch and the Sedan (both auto) and both are a great little car. The sedan if aimed at older people and for an extra $700 you get more airbags and i think esp?? Both have had no problems (only a year so far) but my family is Toyota mad! Mums 2000 echo was thrashed for 3 years before i got my own car and never missed a beat! still going hard today! Dad has always had camrys and although boring they never had a single problem! Also i'm never worried to take the Yaris to a toyota dealer for log book work although i'd never take my car to holden like many people here, just something else to think about..

Ford Focus looks like a nice car.
