Hi,

My 07 Astra Sri hatch is due for some new tyres.

It currently has a set of Continental Sport Contact 2 (225/45 R17) which came on it when i bought it.

They have now achieved 45,000kms which isnt too bad I suppose, but im struggling to find the same tyre to replace it under $380 a tyre.

I really dont mind paying $380 a tyre if they are really good, but is there any other brand anyone can reccommend to put on the car, perhaps from your own experiences?

The car is stock as a rock, the stock rims are 7.5 wide, I know I should be able to get away with a 215 wide tyre which could be cheaper has anyone else done anything similar?

Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Had this brand in the past and found them to be good value. But at the time, I was using them on a compact 4WD.

Well the Falken FK452 did well in the current Wheels tyre test 2008. They should be reasonable value for money.

Do Michelin Precedas 2 or Bridgestone Adrenalins come in that size? BOth are excellent tyres.

i use the 215/40/17 profile tyres with a 7.5" wide rims. no issues.

for $380 each tyre, u can easily get some good tyres. such as the
michellin, bridgestone & hankooks.

i've got brigestone potenza adrenalins. excellent grip, comfort & noise.
expect to pay approx. $300 a corner for these.

continentals r awesome tyres, but i'm not sure how far up the price range they sit.

Ive got a set of Michelin Pilot Preceda PP2's on my Corsa (205/40 ZR17) and I love them. Also my boss has them on his IS200 (215/45R17) and he loves them too. Price wise looking around $250/corner at last check.

What size would you prefer to have? I will get a price for you at work tomorrow and post here. We sell both Continentals and Hankooks. I should be able to beat $380 no problems :)

I can't match that price of $380 on the Continental Sport contact 2 as it doesn't exist anymore! :D It has been replaced by the new tyre "Sport COntact 3" which retails at $433!

So with that in mind, I can highly recommend Hankook Tyres, some of which would massively outperform the Conti's anyway. pricing is as follows;

225/45r17 Hankook 422 - $200
225/45r17 Hankook k104 - $225
225/45r17 Hankook H405 - $184
225/45r17 Hankook S1-evo - $250

You can check out the Tread patterns and Technical info at www.hankooktyre.com.au (http://www.hankooktyre.com.au)

Hope this helps :)

Bridgestone Potenza Adrenalin's are awesome tires (well i think so anyway), $180 a pop for 16's so dare i say a touch more for 17's.

I'm running on 205/40/17 Falken's and just replaced them about two weeks ago after appx 50k kms. These cost me $135 each incl fit + balance. after two years the price at this place only went up $5 per tyre.

215's shouldn't be too much more in cost but i have no dramas with these tyres.

225/45 R17 is a 'standard' high performance tyre size, and there are a lot of choices in this size. I suggest you stay with this size and look at different brands.

My SRi also has Continental Sport Contact 2, and I find them to be a marvellous tyre. Very good grip wet and dry, not too noisy, and I expect to get about 50,000 out of them which is excellent. But I never realised they were so expensive, in the US this tyre in this size retails for $180! Something is wrong, seriously wrong.

In any case I already did some research for tyres in that size, and the Hankook Ventus R-S2 (Z212) rates exceptionally well. The Kumho Ecsta ASX (KU21) also gets good reviews.

There are many Hankook tyres and they vary a lot in performance, some are long-life with little grip and others have very good grip. Just because you 'had some' doesn't mean that some of their high-performance tyres don't fit the bill at a reasonable price. My wife currently has Hankooks on her Barina, and they are signficantly better than the Pirellis it came with, especially in the wet. I had Kumho on my previous car, and I can vouch that this company also can produce above-average tyres.

My recommendation is to visit some review sites (tire rack, 1010) and check your priorities (grip, life, noise) against how these review sites rate them. That's how we ended up with the Hankooks on my wifes car.

At that price I expect my car will end up with either Hankook or Kumho when the time comes for replacement.

The latest Astra SRi 2.2 comes with Bridgestone Potenza RE050A's in 225/45/17 ... absolute gun of a tyre, but you'll only get about 20,000kms MAX out of them because they wear fast.

Cost around $380 a side, but for wet weahter and grip you'll be struggling to find a better tyre tbh.

Pirelli make one in the same size, but I've had P6000s on another car and they werent that flash.

also had a bad experience with Falkens (sidewall blowout at 60kph).

My wife's Barina came with Pirelli P6000s and they were rubbish. Average grip in the dry, downright dangerous in the wet, wore out in no time, and NOISY! The Kumhos she's got now are better on all points.

It's a pity about the price of the Continentals, because the grip / wear balance is pretty good. But there are tyres around with a similar grip / wear balance and a lesser price. I suspect Continental are doing with their tyres what Mercedes and BMW do with their cars: taking something that is average performance and average price, and giving it a price premium in Australia to make it seem more special than it really is.
