View Full Version : Carbon Fibre Bonnet for Astra G

I'm considering doing something like this. It won't be real carbon fibre. Don't know if anyone has heard of ModiCoat or Mad-Coat. They specialise in 3-dimensional paintwork and can create a finish that will look exactly like carbon fibre for a fraction of the cost.

I've attached a photoshop image below to give you an idea of what it would look like.

I can get a bonnet from a wreckers for around $150.00 so i can always swap back to the original bonnet.

Undecided at the moment so any Comments / feedback appreciated.

No! Save the carbon fibre for the cars that deserve it . . . it's an Astra for crying out loud! Yours looks nice as it is, don't spoil it by trying to make it something that it isn't.

Unless it's real carbon fibre don't do it. It never looks EXACTLY like the real thing.

keep ur original bonnet, buy a second hand one and get that one done..that way, u can always revert back.

Im not a fan of fake carbon fibre, but I think a gloss black bonnet could look sweet. Maybe just do the bulge in the middle and around the grille, and leave the sides blue so that the blue still flows down past the headlights.

I airbrush cf on my r/c planes all the time.. there's plenty of how too on the web.. hardest part with doing a bonnet is getting the antislip rubber used as a stencil big enough.

By the time you pay to have something that size modicoated you could almost buy a genuine carbon fibre bonnet from the uk.

I got quoted $200 to modicoat an xbox 360 console.

I would imagine a bonnet woud cost you a fortune to have done.

Dee

why would you carbon fibre an xbox....? each to their own

i was under the impression carbon fibre was illegal here as it did not stack up to the Australian Standards - it crumbles and shatters in an accident instead of bending like real bonnets do

unless its the real deal, then i wouldnt bother..

i've seen some of their work, in particular, their carbon fibre stuff and it looks like the real deal. I was quoted $800.00 to do the bonnet which is vey reasonable considering whats involved in creating the final finish and the size of the bonnet. Still alot of money though.

it actually looks too good, as normal carbon fibre isnt perfect and can move around and over humps and stuff it changes, where this stuff from what i have seen is vert consistant and looks too good.

Go for a wood grain bonnet if u want to be different hehehehe

I'm sure that for $700 you could get a couple extra kW out of that engine...bugger the CF immitation, that's so yesterday :p

It would be different. But Arden Blue is TOO good to take away from. Id say spend the $800 on some more kW goodies. . . . . .

Sorry, not a fan of carbon fibre bonnets...both the real thing or the fake look-a-likes ! I don't like the look of them and I don't like the cost of them !

IMHO the fake ones look cheesy no matter how realistic and if it's fake - why bother, you'll only cop ridicule...

The real ones cost a small fortune and for the weight saving gained, you could've put that money into tuning for extra power etc.
Then there's the safety concerns with regards to frontal accidents, carbon fibre bonnets change all of the dynamic results with this and are illegal for road use...

I do however like carbon 'factory' roofs or tops, they look good as they're not 'in your face' as much as a bonnet and are designed by the manufacturer to be there, so no issues with safety or the like...

If I had a carbon fibre bonnet, even a factory one, I'd want it painted - looks heaps better IMO

Considering the 'real mcoys' are worth thousands of dollars - yes, I'd spend that on something else, not a carbon bonnet - just my opinion :)

bit O.T

I know real carbon fiber is illegal, but is that only in a car that it was not a stock factory item.

So if your brought a Tesla (http://www.opelaus.com/forum/www.teslamotors.com/)it would not be a issue and would be able to be ADRed

Correct :)

If factory fitted or standard it's all roses...

I'm thinking don't touch the car from the outside...that arden blue is a beautiful color and any black bits and pieces will just deminish that beauty.

Isn't there a law that prevents that being done to Arden Blue? Any other color is OK, but Arden Blue is off limits I thought.

I'm sure I read it somewhere . . .

Personally I am not a fan of that type of cosmetic shit, adds nothing to the car.

Buy the Koni shocks with that money and spend some time attacking some hills, that would be my choice.

When it comes to modding cars, $1000 is nothing mate. If he likes the look, he should go for it.

"he" is me! :)

i know $1000 might not be alot when it comes to modifying cars (all i need to do is look at my receipts!). It does all add up mind you. Nevertheless, $1000 is alot of money to spend on something which I may not like once its done and which i doubt I could easily sell for anywhere near that price.... Hence the reason for starting this thread. Now that I've read all the comments and feeback, including your's, it has ultiimately helped me make a decision.

I'm not doing it!!!

I think you made a wise choice mate. Not only is the arden blue beautiful but with a ricer bonnet you loose the understated and often unexpected ability of the Sri turbo....

what is also good about the SRi is that by being understated it is an all occasions car too, with a black bonnet it could make it a bit of boys toy

Love ya car mate and as many have said you don't need to add to arden blue- its like puting fake tits on jessica alba:D
