You get shit house trade-in values. I wouldnt be suprised if they resell the Astra for at least 30+K.

I traded my Cali for $4500 and it's at a yard for $10K.

Trade in valuations are most of the time very low and also depends what you're buying!!! Different to resale value, that person would have been able to sell that SRi-T for 30k, but decided to take the easier option to trade and lost!!

High-performance two-door turbos are VERY SPECIALISED CARS and a trade-in like this could easily sit on the lot for months before someone shows an interest. It is bizzare to spend thousands extra on a new SRi turbo compared to a basic four-door Astra and get very little extra on trade-in, but that's the way it is. The most in-demand trade-ins are automatics, anything automatic and the dealer will fall over himself to get in on his lot.

If a dealer thinks the car will move quickly, they're quite happy to make only a couple of thousand on it.

hmmmm...its true that the 2door turbo is a very specialised car and as such will be sitting in the car yard for a while. But losing more than $10K in 1 year is crazy! does the same thing happen with vw gti`s, wrx`s and evo`s??

Yes. To a dealer a car is a stock number, something to be bought and sold as a profit. They have absolutely no interest that its a four-wheel-drive turbo or a car for grannys to drive to the shops. If the car that grannys drive to the shops turns over fast and doesn't cost the dealer a fortune in finance and insurance (and possibly having to re-register it), then that's what the dealer's interested in.

They look at wholesale prices . Not what the car is worth to you. sad i know . but thats they way they all work nowdays.

Yeah it's all about turn around times when it comes to dealers.

The cars that are on the lot are actually owned by finance companies and the dealer is paying a rate every day it's sitting there unsold so in order to make money on low volume models they need to buy them with a bigger margin built in to ensure it dosen't end up being a liability.

A new car purchase should really be for long term and high mileage ownership,
The cost of a 3yr 100,000 warranty in real terms is at least 15k.
