Melbourne’s auto show is host to Holden’s 60th anniversary celebrations, and to mark the occasion, the Australian brand has revealed its Coupe 60. Designed to combine sports and luxury for the momentous occasion, the Coupe 60 takes from the best of what Holden has to offer.

Shorter than the VE sedan by nearly 60mm, the Coupe 60 combines stout proportions with taut styling that gives both the impression of race-track speed and road-going comfort. Huge 21″ wheels wrapped in high-performance Kumhos give solid traction, which is a necessary considering the 6.0L V8 under the hood.

Special four-point harness restraints at all four seating positions add to the race-feel while still maintaining comfort and safety. Special details in the interior or highlighted with a distinctive shiny red leather, and metal surfaces are finished in dark gunmetal and satin chrome.

The designers hope the car will make it to production, and since the Holden line could use a new Monaro (GTO in the States), maybe that’s where this car will find a home.

Has anyone else noticed that the speedo is actually sitting out from the dash? At first I thought it was in the dash, as normal. From the interior side shot, you can see it sits maybe 2 inches out. Pretty cool... for the concept at least...

one thing i dont like about it, is the exhaust/muffler on the side right near the wheel. doesnt the muffler get hot that having rubber near it, would be considered a safety hazard? not from catching on fire, but prehaps for overheating the tyre and hence poping it prematurely?
dont the v8 race cars have the muffler more forward of the rear wheels?

Yeah, sorry guys - I don't see it either. It looks moronic to me. That VE front just doesn't work on that car.

I actually like the previous Monaro, but it was tailored more for that shape...this looks more like a "How can we make a VE with two doors".

I've seen billions of Ford fans try and do the same thing and it just doesn't work. It looks completely out of balance.

It's a concept car mate. Just like the TT36 was. Concept cars doesn't mean that they can't be finished off. The boys at Holden Design have done a top job on this that's for sure. Looks even better in the flesh.

IF it ever makes it into production, I can't see it looking too much like this concept. Side sculptured vents, side pipes, rear difuser, pillarless, fixed (non-recline) bucket seats with full race harness front and back, manual only(?).

The only way this will make the production line is if the Pontiac G8 is a sell-out and the American GM buying public DEMAND a 2 door coupe. Didn't work for the previous model, can't see it working for this one.

Oh, and Wraith, as much as it would be a real treat, I really can't see it ever working as a convertible. Is the car buying public really ready for a BIG convertible. The price premium on our Astras, etc., is already prohibitive for many buyers, so can't see too many people wanting to spend up big on a BIG convertible. Stick with the Nissan GTR mate, we know that's real.

Nope, wheel base is identical to VE sedan. The particular platform can't be shortened.

After having seen this thing in the metal, I agree with your above comments, ie: as I stated in the Motor Show thread, if it ever makes it into production, it will not have alot of the items featured on the concept, that's for sure...and a pity :(

Not sure about the reality for a vert variant, but GMH have been putting quite alot forward for one, ever since the Monaro concept vert, maybe they're gauging public comment/opinion 1st on the idea ???

And yes after seeing the GT-R in the metal, ' if ' I could, then I'm now more convinced than ever, this is the one ultimate car to have, it is real and what you see is what you get :)

Will still be interesting however to see what if anything comes from this G60 concept :)

I can tell you that most of the V8 powered cars I've owned have been autos, reason is because when you have a certain level of grunt, autos are actually easier to live with and quicker/faster than a manual trans too ;)

Auto V8 much much easier to drive as a daily driven car, especially when in my case 2-3 hours a day is sitting in peak hour traffic!!!

However if it wasn't a daily drive, i'd have it no other way than a manual!!!

+1

Totally agree, that's the reason I opted for a V6 auto when I purchased my Cali, because it was always intended as a daily driver and at that time I was negotiating up to 3 hrs a day of stop start peak traffic - real pain in the arse in a manual...weekend/week night car yes manuals the go, although I'd take one of any of the new automated manuals anyday over either the traditional auto or stick shift manual :)

If I had another high powered drag car, auto is the only or best option :)

56k for the basic Monaro Coupe (if they name it that) model sounds about right :) similar pricing to the outgoing Monaro model....

But expect HSV or other upper end models to hit 80-120k depending on powertrain and kit :)
