Mercedes C class....
What a load of bollocks, picking a car that's not accessible to everyone. I've suddenly lost so much respect (what little i had) for them. There are so many better cars out there at the moment that they could've picked and yet they chose a C class....

Are they kidding them selves? Or did the other competition not show up ?
What was in the short list?

I tend to agree with you.

Out of the whole line up, I'd probably have chosen the Mondeo myself.

Curious how Holden wasn't even there. Now that's pathetic.

Oh well... C'est la vie.

COTY criteria isn't lets pick a car that everyone can buy. It's lets pick the best car and it include a component of value for money car.

The new C class is a great car and does represent value for money what it offers vs what is charged for it is much better then it's competitors. Includeding the much more expensive E class

What new holden car released in 2007 do you think is better then the C class?

My vote would have been for the new Mazda 2. And I hate to say it but from the looks of things the new Mazda 6 will get next year’s vote. I don’t even like Mazda’s but it seems they are quickly becoming the best in their respective classes.

I was surprised by the C Class, but from all the reviews I have read it has moved along way from where the previous generation was.

Wheels COTY isn't about what car people are most likely to be able to afford. Your mistaking it for the terrible NRMA "best cars" award where they award it to the same cars year after year after year. Bollocks.

Personally I would have liked to see the award go to the Mazda 2. For a small car to buck the trend by being smaller, lighter and more efficent, yet be only the smallest amount more expensive than the previous model is a huge step forward.

Ahhh, love it when people fall for that (mazda's weight loss hyperbole) crap

It is about the same weight as the 5yr old HOnda Jazz... and far less roomy or versatile. Not to mention no thriftier. The old Mazda2 was a porker and the new version is class average at best.

Tell me how that is progress? ;)

They stretched the (weightloss) truth with the MX5 (NC), the Mazda 2 and now the Mazda6. Apparently all the weight loss evaporates with the OZ versions of these cars ;) Now Mazda says the MAzda6 would weigh 150kg more if they weren't so persistant with their weight loss mantra... bwwahahahaah.

You could be onto something there....the Mazda range is getting continually better ;)

The 2 would be my pick in the very small car segment...

My partner's sister drives a C280 with all the bells and whistles, and whilst it is a nice car... the leg room in the rear is woeful, and the leather is not what I would call classy.

I am not impressed with it.

The new Mazda 2 has a 5 star safety rating + dives and handles like a medium sized car.

The new 6 will weigh in at nearly 200kg less than the new Mondeo, have more power and look amazing..

so what clarkson is actually trying to say is, the Mazda 2 is cheese.. and not that delicious homemade style cheese, but rather the plasticy wrapped in single wrapping type cheese..

Forgot to mention that the guys rolled a Toyota Kluger during the testing at Lang Lang. They said the accident happened due to the cars woeful dynamics and terrible ESP calibration on dirt roads (the accident happened on a dirt road).

Isn't this car supposed to be an "off roader"?

Toyota = egg on face
