Hi all, i have an 03 Arden Blue turbo Astra with OPC grille, badges chrome mirrors, and various chrome internal fittings. In keeping with the "blue n chrome" look I am considering doing 2 chrome window strips that run along the base of the windows from under the side mirrors to back of the rear windows. Has anybody done this ? any clues who would do this in Melb ?
Merry Christmas to all........
Coyotte.

There is a place in Bennett Street, Dandenong, right near where it meets Cheltenham Rd, that specialises in chroming auto parts. Its a few doors up from the paint place on the corner of Cheltenham Rd & Bennett Street.

Not a bad idea coyotte, I too have thought of doing a similar thing to my vert in that and other parts of the car as well :)

FYI - I've been to that mob mentioned above to do custom chrome work for me once (in 2005) - and it'll be the last time I ever go there !!!

What I got done was chrome on plastic parts....this is already a difficult thing to do and not many people specialise in it.

I was told by them that they could do it (the items had to be shipped interstate to do so) and I was told 1 month tops....100-$150 tops....

I didn't get the chromed plastic items back for nearly 6 months !!!

The end result wasn't very good !!!

And they end up charging me $200 and that was after I voiced my disgust of the whole thing, otherwise they actually wanted more !!!

Now I can tell you this to warn you about what happened to me, but it was for plastic parts, apparently they're ok with metal chroming, that I can't comment on.

I'm assuming you need to get some sort of cover made up for the rubber strips and then have those chromed for what you want to do ???

Maybe try also a chrome pin striping supplier, they may have something that might do the trick.

Just to make sure we are talking about the same place, I can't remember their name, it was 2 years ago, but I still have their ph. no. it's 9794 7530, if that matches, it's the same place, so just be aware, they are dodgy, at least with me they were....

hmm...chroming is not a good idea for rubber. plastic is actually painted with chrome paint like the rear strip on the AH which is just chrome painted plastic.

if u look at an AH coupe CDX or VXR, you can see the chrome window weather strip...they are actually metal embedded in a plastic moulding....have a look at them and see how they do it...

by the way Wraith, i am still waiting on the details for that jap place in dandenong;)

I'd have to agree with you ange, bennets do have alot of stuff but are a right rip-off. the way they work out the price for a part is they call holden, find out the price brand new then half it!!! got quoted 250 for a second hand AFM which is 500 brand new from holden....(its around 170 posted brand new from UK:eek: )

end of rant:dance:

True Gav, I've been to Bennets auto wreckers heaps of times, I agree they are a bit of a rip, but I was trying to warn coyotte about the chroming place across the road from Bennets :)

thats how most wreckers i have been to work unless they don't see any use or think any one else will ever buy the part.

Thanks for the responses, what i was actually thinking was to get a sheet metal fabricator to make up 2 strips to fit over the rubber mouldings, then have them chromed & clued. Definately NOT chromed rubber.
(Its ashame that you cannot buy these bits aftermarket via LMF, or a similar supplier), ie like chrome rear strip that fits onto the boot tail lip on the astra convertible.
I look forward to coming on a Vic cruise in 08.

Merry Christmas & drive safely. Coyotte.

Yep, that definitely sounds like the way to go.

Be a good idea to get them made out of corrosion resistant metal, maybe very thin stainless steel, as aluminium is not good for chrome plating.

If you do go ahead with this, let me know, I'd be interested in a set for my TS and it should be cheaper getting more than one set made up :)

Next Vic cruise is on Sunday Jan. 6th :)
