Hay guys, been a long time since i was last on here!!

Any way, str8 to the point, i have a problem with my engine, i know whats wrong with it but i was just wondering if any one else has had it and what they had replaced/fixed and how much they paid!!

The bottom cog on the timeing belt came loose and let all the valves drop... not good. Went to the local Holden dealership (Bob Todd Moters Port Macquaire) and they have quoted $4000 - $5000 to get it fixed. All Iv been told is that the crank shaft will need to be replaced and a new timing belt and tensioner!! Also the head needs to opend up and valves checked out.

Any idea on what else may be needed to be done from past experiences??

Oh yea and my car is a Corsa (berina) 2001 XC, it has 180,000kms on the clock so guess it was time for that to happen to it.

Any other options like taking it to the scrapys, or getting a 2nd hand engine? which way would work out cheaper.

The rest of the car is in good condition and looks like it would go for another 180,000kms so i dont realy wana loose to much money on it.

For reference to price i bought it for $7000 back in Feb and spent about $1000 on it since on genral maintenence and insurence CTP etc.:(

Any information would be great... i aint a machanice in any sence of the word!!!

hmm....does not sound too good. u could try get a new engine with low kms from wreckers...

Yes, difficult decision....

I'd definitely get more/alternative quotes, might find a workshop who'll do it for less - at that price, it's almost as much as what the car's worth....

Getting prices on a S/H or rebuilt engine is also worth a try - best of luck, hope it all turns out good.

**** holden, either:

1. get a private mechanic to look at it and do the work for 1/4 of the cost of holdens quote.

2. ring bennet wreckers in melb and get a price on a replacement second hand engine

3. pull the motor yourself, strip it and rebuild it

not sure i'f i'd be recommending your 3rd option insane :D

when was the timing belt last changed

Read the post, the timing belt gear came off. An engine that has done 180,000 will be well worn, and fitting new valves (and subjecting worn pistons to higher compression pressures) can cause problems. A Barina will be more worn than most, because the relative lack of power means the engine has to be driven harder even in suburban driving.

I recommend a good second hand unit without too many kilometres, there should be plenty of wrecks around.

Definitely get yourself a second hand/refub'd motor, but ensure its been well looked after.

Refurbs are better because they've been cracked open and rebuilt. Second hand is a mixed bag.

Whatever the choice get someone who has WORKED on the cars and is respected for working on them to do it.

Back in my Swift days I had a motor go on me, replaced it was a better motor and the guy who did the job charged more, but was a specialist.

Cost me around $7000 but there was ALOT of custom work, engineering, etc involved in that.

Pay peanuts get monkeys they say, and with a car, a difference of $500 could cost you much more if something goes wrong.

http://www.picknpayless.com.au/new-stock-wrecking.php - They are currently wrecking 2 Barinas (an SB, and another one), if front ends are okay all you need is someone kind enough to put it on a trailer for you and take it to your place.

The silver one looks like the front ends rooted on it though.

If you are interested shoot me a PM as I live close to there and can check it out for you.

These places also deal in wrecking XC Barinas:

Its just a pain in the ass that the life of a holden timing belt is sh1thouse.

Well at the time it seemed fine, and the guy selling it to me said that she will run for a long time to come cus new engines can take it!!

One more thing, would it be possible to put a bigger engine in it, i.e. an SRI or SXI? thinkin may aswell go bigger

the 1.8L SRi engine will definitely fit

and the SXi engine is exactly the same as yours isnt it?

low astra
20th November 2007, 07:45 PM
rather than look for a sri engine, why dont you just look for a astra engine, there the same arent they?

i would asume a wrecker will play with your short n curly's by telling you there different and a sri engine is worth more, but all i can see being different is the mounts
in saying that, you would need a new computer and all the hardware, just try to find a good 1.4, without all the injection, and exhaust then do the swap over a few weekends, and a large amount of beer,
might be time to give yourself a crash course in back yard mechanics, could save you 2 - 3K

the problem with putting different engines in is when u go to holden for parts or when u r trying to insure ur car.

I would stick with getting the same engine to avoid any unnecessary expense if I were you...unless you are willing to transform the little barina into a fast car or something...bear in mind, that u might need to rewire lots of stuff, new drive shafts, new gear box, probably new radiator and heaps of other things if u want a different engine in. u will probably have to upgrade brakes too as u would have more power.

Valid point, didnt realy think about that. may aswell jus buy an SRI/SXI if thats the case lol. Thinkin of doin the engin swap but with the same size (1.4) and then mayB get it tweeked a little!!;)

from bad experience i can tell you this -

i had belt let go which crashed the valves - cost me $300 including the new tools i had to aquire! (after being quoted $3k) this included full new set of valves, lappers, lapping compound stem seals, all new gaskets and machining of the head - plus valve compressers, a lot of the other stuff i had lying around

BUT if you really need a new crank SHAFT then a second hand engine might be the way to go - otherwise you will need to get a new crank shaft have the journals re-machined to the incoming pistons... look it could be maybe $7-$800 if you can do it yourself - and since you'll be learning as you go possibly 4-6 weekends of full work...

but the rewards are huge! in being able to do it yourself...

anyway - check that crank shaft - surely its just a busted cog??

oh and get your parts from the UK - if you need any contacts just ask!
