Was looking thru the latest astra catalogue, got to the specs page and in the service section, the timing belt change on the 1.8's and diesel are now 150,000k  , and 120,000k for the turbo models so the AH series 2 can get another 90,000k out of it, what on earth did they do different to get another 90,000k out of a belt, what is it titanium coated? lol

YES. Even the windscreen is made from different material....but still looks exactly the same.

RE: timing belt:I guess you could always buy the timing belt for the MY7.5 to put in the MY7.

Thats what a review of the my7.5 says:

HOLDEN comprehensively addressed the mainstream AH Astra CD and CDX hatch and wagon models’ biggest weak point – their lack of oomph from the 90kW/165Nm 1.8-litre ECOTEC four-cylinder engine – with a heavily revised 1.8-litre unit.

Known as the 1.8 XER, it delivers 103kW of power at 6300rpm and 175Nm of torque (that’s for the manual; auto: 170Nm) at 3800rpm. Both engines are married to a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic gearbox.

Minor cosmetic changes accompanied the reengineering, including a new grille, front bumper, lower air intake and headlight surrounds, as well as an upgrade in the trim materials used.

Meanwhile, a new non-turbo SRI hatchback model was introduced, using a 110kW/210Nm 2.2-litre direct-injection petrol four-cylinder engine. Gearbox choices are a four-speed auto or six-speed manual.

This engine also powered the AH Astra TwinTop, Holden’s four-seater retractable hardtop convertible answer to the Peugeot 307 CC, Renault Megane CC and Ford Focus Convertible. It replaced the popular TS Astra Convertible.

All other AH Series II cars – including the 1.9-litre CDTi turbo-diesel, and 2.0-litre turbo-charged petrol models – remained the same mechanically. ----->BULLSHIT

Sadly, the impressive AH Astra wagon still misses out on the diesel and 2.0 and 2.2 petrol powerplants, having to make do with the upgraded 1.8.

WHOA! Does this mean the AH has a timing belt and not a timing chain, therefore need replacing?

Holy cow.

The 2.2 has a timing chain which doesn't need replacement; it also has platinum sparkplugs with a life of 120,000km.

All other Astras have timing belts. I know from experience that belt changes are expensive: there are lots of parts that must be removed including one of the engine mounts, and the belt itself is worth a couple of hundred dollars. With a previous car which had 90,000km timing belt change intervals, I got the dealer to replace the external (waterpump / alternator, power steering and airconditioning) drive belts as precautionary maintenance (they had to be removed in any case), and I kept the old belts as spares.

I am shocked too, so I checked my service book last night, at 90,000kms it has to be done.

I dont understand, why!!! WHY. The 04 Barina's, BARINA'S came with a chain, so why can't the 06, 07 Astra come with it too!

sh1t!

My wife has a 2004 Barina, and the timing BELT has to be changed every 60,000. I had a 2000 Hyundai Elantra XD, and the belt had to be changed at 90,000.

Ok according to a holden rep, (I take this as a grain of salt atm) now the 1.8l has variable camshaft phasing on both camshafts the belt doesn't have to work/drive the motor as hard as previous 1.8's, I'm still unsure but that's what they told me so meh.

yep, that is true..that`s why the new 1.8L has 100kw or something compared to 92KW for the pre 2007 model. But i am not sure if that is why the belt will last longer!! the sri-t still has same kws but timing belt change intervals is evey 120km right?

I have a 7.5 CDX and it came with a service booklet (printed Oct 06) that still uses the old engine code (Z18XE) and specifies a time belt change at 90,000km.

Called up Parra Heartland and a service guy said the booklet came with the car so he'd go with what's on the booklet than the catalogue.

Anybody who owns a 7.5 and has a different version of the service booklet?

You probably got gibbed and did not get a My7.5. What is your vin number? it shows whether the car is a my7 or my7.5.

oh by the way. i think the booklets are printed here...so holden have have stuffed it up...chk your VIN.

very strange that you got the old engine and old booklet!! Holden is so dodgy!
may be the new engine has the same code just different numbers at the end.

Check another my7.5 at ur dealership...

u should have got the 102kw engine.....
