Carried out the 60000km service today with the help of xplosv57, and was quite impressed with the condition of the spark plugs that needed replacing. Not much carbon buildup at all.

They've been in there for 60,000km, which is why I was impressed.

thats what you'd expect from such a young engine. Once they start getting black, well...:(

Means your engine's running sweet :)

But man that plugs really worn out, I'd say probably better to change at 40 or 50k if you use the same brand/type again ;)

heres a quick one for you...i'm coming up to my 60k service...so i'll be doing the plugs and the timing belt...how hard is it to change a timing elt? i've never done one so just wondering if i'll need any special tools to do it??

Pain in the arse if you havn't done one before. I didn't have to do a timing belt thankfully as mines got a chain.

Yeh there was a bit of a difference in the gapping.

Can't comment on the Astra, but I've done the timing belt/pulleys and water pump in my V6 Calibra and it wasn't hard at all, only very time consuming.

If your technically minded and done some basic engine works before you'll be just fine.

With regards to the Calibra, a total of around 8 specialised tools were required, but I only ended up using around 3 of them. (in my case I'm fortunate to have a mech head 1st cousin with a fully equipped mech workshop to go and do with and use as I please)

The timing belt and pulley kit comes with all installation instructions, step by step, IMHO even a novice could follow it easily enough.

I assume it'll be similar for an Astra, you could always get the kit and check it out, if it seems too dificult then get a grease monkey in on the act :)

I think there's an engine mount inside the timing belt circuit, which means you have to undo it to get the timing belt off and on - I know that was definately the case with my Vectra, and I'm pretty sure its the same with the 1.8's. If you're very mechanically minded you could probably attempt it.

Sure you don't wanna rephrase that to 'xplosv57 did the service today...' LOL!! :p

Yeah plugs were in good nick, means the car is running well, and also the good fuel you're using!!
