Hi Guys!

I just had my 2003 TS 2.2SRI in for its 75,000KM service only to be told that the rear shocks are leaking and will need replacing in the next few months.

Is this normal for an Astra of this age and KM traveled?

Also what sort of price am I going to be looking at to replace the shocks? Does anyone know the brand or part numbers for them?

There must be something about shocks on the Astra 'cos my hatch struts are leaking to so they need replacing to!! Does anyone have part numbers for these?

don't have part numbers, but the rear shocks in out 2000 CD went at about 55K and had to get them replaced....

just did it at my local brakes plus - was around $400 mark, this was about 2 years ago though...

if it is leaking, it should be covered under warranty.

make sure the oil is not coming from somwhere else first. Sometimes they can be repaired...check suspension places...pedders etc

the koni replacements are around the $300 mark and there good. compare that when you get your price from who ever.

Just be apply least it is the rear and the not the font as that need the whole arm to be redone.

Your hatch struts are Monroe ML4222, and about $44 each.

Rear shocks:
- Monroe GT Gas $88 each
- Gabriel $68 each, but availability might be an issue
- Still waiting on KYB to get back to me...

wow thanks for all the fast replies guys!! Great forum this!!

Thanks for the part numbers and prices rallysport. The prices are not as scary as I thought they would be....phew!

I already checked the warranty, Shocks are not covered as it is deemed to be fair 'wear and tear'....BAH!!

They might be if you get quoted retail from somewhere! ;)

Also has been at times the weekend club car:

I did get told that if they leak (as apposed to just flogged out) it was a warranty claim, because they could be deemed faulty... Either way, I've babied my car, so I still think it should be a warranty claim! :p

The life-expectancy of shocks (that is operating within spec) is about 50,000 km. If you compare a 2 yr old shock to a new one you will find a significant difference in performance.

75,000 km and leaking is normal.

Sad thing is that most shocks are left in cars between 6-10 years before being changed.

Hmm I might actually invest in doing the fronts and rears at the same time to keep performance consistent front to rear.

Though El Burito mentioned the fronts need extra work doing....can anyone elaborate?

The rears are just the shocks were as the front are the whole strut as its all built in together.

Most drivers don't realise that shocks are well worn after about 50,000 for normal hydraulic and about 70,000 for gas examples. When you get some new shocks and struts, you will notice the difference.
