Price and equipment

Three Star
i would have loved leather. what a pitty that's not on the options list. otherwise, it has pretty much everything, including cruise control, aircon, MP3 stereo, leather wrapped sports wheel with all those buttons on it...
Under the bonnet

Five Star
fabulous engine. a sports car that burns less fuel than a Yaris, even when pushed really hard. oh, and how about that fantastic torque (320 Nm), V6 Commodore like, starting just 2,000 rpm!
How it drives

Five Star
great handling, helped by the sport suspension (15mm lower than CDX), sticky 18" tyres (optional) and the upgraded brakes.
Comfort and practicality

Four Star
The ride is pretty good, considering it has firmer suspension and 18" wheels. boot is pretty large for a hatch.
Safety and security

Five Star
two front airbags, side airbags, curtain airbags, ABS, ESP and traction control. NCAP 5/5 stars. do i need to say more?
Quality and reliability

Four Star
early days yet, but is well known Diesels engines are more reliable than their Otto counterparts. the car feels solid and well built.
Servicing and running costs

Four Star
needs servicing every 15,000 km. fuel very cheap since it needs refueling (52 l tank) every 750km when driven in the metro area. on interstate roads it does over 1,000 km before running empty. maintenance costs could be somewhat higher than for petrol versions, but if you drive over 25,000 km/year is worth it. the Diesel is also much more fun to drive than a 1.8l petrol Astra!
Aesthetics/styling

Five Star
love the way it looks, stunning in black with 5 spoke 18" OEM alloys. a real sporty and fresh looking alternative to the sober German hatch. it should age very well, too.
Overall Verdict

Four Star
good looking car, well built, and very safe. fast while being easy on fuel. a great commuter during the week and so much fun to drive on winding roads in the hills during weekends. the engine never feels out of grunt, regardless of how steep the road! contrary of what people think, the Diesel is not noisy. sure, you can tell it burns oil when idle, but when you start moving it actually makes less noise than the petrol engine. for example, it is cruising at 110 km/h doing 2,100 rpm. at that speed is not only very quiet but also extremely efficient, using about 5.0 l/100km. if you are in the market for a hatch, just take a CDTI for a test drive. see for yourself why half of the cars sold in Europe are Diesels, and why this Astra model is such a smashing hit there.
