View Full Version : Delorean Dream

A nephew of a good mate of mine has finally managed to purchase his long time dream car and get it imported from the U.S.

It's a Delorean, made more popular by the movie Back to the Future.

I'm told it was purchased from a rich dentist in Kansas.

I only found out about it today.....my mate thought being a car freak, I might be interested lol.

I can think of at least one other person who'd be flipping backwards to have one of these :D

Hopefully  when it arrives, my mate will be able to arrange a visit for me to check it out in the flesh and go for spin or 2 or 3 :D *fingers crossed*

Here are some pics he sent me today of the car being loaded up (along with a stingray) to be transported to the shipping docks earlier this month.

That is exactly what I said the other day whilst watching Knight Rider...in reality the Trans Am does not quite do it for me.

Still, would not mind seeing the Delorean up close.

Good luck with compliance, it's gonna be a hassle. Any import under 30 years of age will need to be converted to RHD.

There was one for sale last week in NSW (on Ebay), genuine RHD for $60K. Had my eye on it and on my Powerball ticket. :p

Found a pic of a DeLorean and my old Calibra which I bumped into in Campbellfield.

Now the DeLorean looks dated.

*LOL* :p

Yeah i think its because both the DeLorean and also the Trans Am don't look that much the same as the ones in their respective movies!!!

Having seen both the original DeLorean from 'Back To The Future' and the Trans Am from 'Knight Rider', the actual movie cars are something i would like to have!!! That stock DeLorean doesn't look anything special though!!!

However, i can't stop drooling over that Vette, that thing is HOT!!!

sorry...sont see the attraction. sure to some it has nostalgic value...but even i loved the b2f movies and this car has nothing for me. unbelievably heavy and was never much of a performer, and now obviously really, really dated.

would rather have the stingray infront of it...

actually would just rather have the money to spend on something better.

Wraith

LOL guys, given the choice, I'd take the Vette as well :)

Speaking of Vettes, my cousins just got one in not that long ago, gotta go round the workshop one weekend soon and check it out, it's a 60's model convertible still in left hand drive - being a grease monkey he's doing the RHD conversion himself, I'll get pics and info for anyone who's interested :)

As for that Delorean, I'm not too sure what the owners intentions are, but I assume he'll just have to get it complied and then just enjoy it I suppose, hopefully I get to meet him and I'll find out all, might even try to get him to bring it along to a future meet :)

Just done a quick read up on the Delorean here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_Lorean_DMC-12 to refresh my memory.

Nah! I'll stick with the 'Vette. Much nicer all round I reckon. But, being an auto enthusiast, I'd always take a serious look at one!

Trouble is, without the flux capacitor it's worthless. :)

I'll be keeping my eye out for a decent Cordia Turbo instead (if there is such a thing). :D

If I get to meet this guy who's getting the one I've pictured, I'll keep in touch with him and if he's ever going to sell it I'll let you know - at least it'll be complied and all 'fixed up' to drive in Oz. :)

Although my mate did tell me yesterday that he has longed for one since he was a small kid, so he may never want to part with it......

I wonder if after all these years whether the Delorean had remained sharp enough to cut through an old boot!!!!!

But wait there’s more, you also get…

Ill admit they look better on the movie screen :P but regardless, a mates got a starion sitting in his back yard, seems decent enuff for what he paid.

I like the fact they are made from stainless and basically in a raw brushed steel finish.

Saw one at Flinkers(?) on Kings Way opposite Melbourne BMW and in full sun these things are BRIGHT!:eek::eek:

The 'consumables' might be hard to find (brakepads etc)

Always thought the front looked like a Sigma

Gearbox is a Renault, the engine is a joint venture between Volvo and someone else (cant remember). Mechanically, you can source all the parts as the vechile was designed by sourcing componets in Europe. It's the body and trimming which are the rare bits.

Very true Simon, was thinking of you the whole time my mate 1st told me about this whole thing........

Funny thing is my mate lives in Doreen, if his nephews close by you pretty much have a neighbour with a Delorean

We'll know where to go looking if it's stolen lol :D

Pred8r, as for body parts, all you need is a good sheet metal worker/fabricator and you can get anything made up and replaced, I actually know a guy who does this exact sort of thing for all those old vintage '20's and '30's type vehicles, ie: he makes new sheet metal folding bonnets door panels etc. with all the louvres and hinges and whatever else and he's really good with stainless and aluminium...

Always thought the front looked like a Sigma

It's not just me then . . .

A classic 80s-90s designed "supercar." Big, ungainly, unrefined, cramped interior, difficult to drive, overpriced, made up faom bits'n'pieces of everything else on the market at the time . . . and not particularly super.

Without the stainless steel body, Back to the Future starring role/s, and Delorean's love of (bad) publicity . . . this would surely have come and gone and nobody would have cared less.
The sort of car you'd love to see Jeremy Clarkson do a revue on . . .

Wraith

Fair and true assessment, but as always each to their own...:)

There's always going to be some type of car that holds a special allure to people for whatever the reason and that's what being a car enthusiast is all about, as long as it makes you feel good and puts a big smile on your dial and you can get yorself one, go for it :)

I must get into contact with my mate and find out where his nephews at with his - probably arrived by now - I wanna check it out !!!
