Hi All!

My name is Bryce, I don't drive an opel/holden, I'm a proud Ford man, but my sister just had to have the XC Barina, and it's up to Dad and I to keep it running, which is why I've joined this site, as we know didly about the lil "Beep, Beep"...

Anyways, I'll be checking this out with interest, seeing what you guys do your cars.

One thing I'm really interested in though, is why Holden drivers seem to be hell bent on calling their cars another brand's, eg, dunnydores with chevy badges, and you guys with your opel badges.

No trying to cause trouble, just intrigued by it!

Hi Bryce, and welcome to Opelaus.... lots to see and read about, and more specifically about the Corsa (read Barina) :D

Whilst Ford is Ford worldwide, General Motors has many different names, depending on location etc.

The reason we would call our "Holden" an Opel, quite simply is due to the fact the car originally was designed for the Opel market (mainly Germany), and in most cases, generally speaking, is an Opel badged a "Holden" ;)

Opels in Australia are:

Corsa (Barina, but not the Suzuki nor Daewoo derived models)
Tigra
Astra (called Astra o'seas)
Zafira
Calibra (one sexy rare coupe)
VectraI personally am not a big fan of either Ford Australia or Holden, but love my Opel Vectra CDXi... which is European  not Australian

My 2 cents....

Hope that clarifies your query :)

Welcome Bryce!

Tfer has done a pretty good explanation above there.

And as to why you see Holden utes (mainly) badged as Chev's, its due to the 5.7L block sitting under the bonnet :D

Well said Thomas.

I would just like to add, that most of the "Holden" Opels, were merely rebadged to "Holden"
and often rather poorly.

As with my Calibra, everything about the Car is Opel, badged and documented accordingly. only the exterior badges say holden. (which are in the process of being opelised.)

*Side Note, i am from South Africa, where Opel is our Brand..and having 3 previous Opels, Calibra being the 4th, i am very brand loyal, and driving a "holden" is rather disturbing..

at least when i open the engine bay, i am delighted to see Opel everywhere.

not all fords are fords, my laser is a mazda 323
and the courier is a mazda bravo.
i wont go into it though, we could be here all year about that :P

on the opel side of things, well the car is originally an opel thats y im proud to display my opel badging :) cept for the stupid air bag wheel.
and where i am there arent too many opelaus members so it makes it stand out, not that a calibra doesnt enough already :D:D

i can also put my 2 cents in here and say that the XR5 runs a VOLVO engine...

tfer wrapped most of it up, but left out the combo :p.
also to add to what has been said, most of the parts on the engine are labeled opel on most of them, even the drive belt tensioner has opel and the blitz on it on my astra ;).
also, some of the plates on the car are still badged with opel too, like the sticker on the drivers door, although the combo has holden on it now :(.

Yes, but you don't see laser drivers putting Mazda badges on them, nor couriers, oh and the XR5 does have a Volvo engine in it, one that munches the astra turbos I might add :P but again, you don't see volvo badges on it do ya guys???

Can't say I blame you though, if I was driving a holden, I'd be so ashamed of it, I'd be calling it anything but a Holden too! :P j/k guys...

i think you miss the point, i know what you are saying, but these cars (most of them) actually are opel, they literally deliver them as opel/vauxhal spec and holden sticks their badges on instead, thus how you can order the car without the badges installed ( i inquired with holden :)).
the nissan pulsar-holden astra
mazda 323-ford laser, are not identicle cars.
different tail lights, headlights, grills, interiors ect.....

Hi Stumpy.

as a note if i was the buy a XR4 witch is being considerd i would be rebadgeing it as a ST.

Holden and Ford Austraila have nothing do with the car besides sell them, changing them to the badges they were origanally intended. + plus it makes my car a little unique, how many ppl at work come up to me and go WTF is your car, its funny

5tumpy
25th April 2007, 04:22 PM
It's actually an XR5 mate, the XR4 is only a rumour at this stage (it's said to be a turbo-charged Fiesta) and even then, I fail to see the point of rebadging it, it's sold and badged here as a holden, therefore it's a holden... It'd be like someone taking the holden badges off one of the new barinas and rebadging them as daewoos....

xplosv57
25th April 2007, 04:31 PM
Well all to their own i guess, but re badging cars makes your car unique, something when i changed mine, so it didn't look the same as other cars!!! I guess you wouldn't know cos Fords are Fords everywhere, not rebadged anywhere, only models shared with Mazda, which then u can choose either!!! If ya don't get it then don't worry, most people here know what its all about!!!

By the way, welcome, hope your sister enjoys the new car!!!!

WTF are u on about the XR4 is due for release in July. I have seen the Info from the ford dealer, plus they had one at the Perth Moter Show. It is going to be mid $20's and is a NA with 110KW

Well I'll be damned, your right mate, my apologies. It's going to be a Fiesta with a tweaked Focus engine in it.

Sorry guys, my area of expertise is Falcons, wouldn't drive a wannabe go-kart if you paid me, but that's not the point....

Xplosv, mate I don't know where to begin there, there are more ways to make your car different than badging it as something it's not... My Falcon is unique, but I did it by actually enhancing the car, not by putting another car company's badges on it to make seem more upmarket...

auzvectra
25th April 2007, 08:22 PM
but as most of us believe, taking the holden badges off is enhancing the car ;).
and then to make the car more euro, as it was attended (and to cover the holes left by the badges) we put the opel badges on.
also help to point out mejmbers, as 95% of the opelised cars are members :).

Well obviously theres other ways to enhance your car other than badging, badging is just one aspect of it!!!! Plus i badged mine to somethin it was originally, checked the build plate and it was built by Opel and hence why it was badged that way!!!!

Maybe if you still disagree, i suggest you let it go, everyone is entitled to do what they like to their own car, if you disagree, then so be it!!!!

Is it just me, or am i sensing a bit of our old mate roger here???

Just shows how ill-informed you are mate. My falcon sticks to the road like shit to a blanket, and has more KW and torque at the wheels than most of your cars do at the bloody flywheel.

At least Ford manages to build and engineer its own cars, not let someone else do all the hard work, not to mention the datsun 180B-spec IRS that commonwhores still use...

You people are nuts, seriously. Not to mention completely useless with advice, is there a single mechanic amongst you, or do you all just pay other people to do your mods for you?

The funny thing is that they're not holden built, they're not holden designed . They're just holden sold.

They're designed, built and imported from germany (dunno where exactly tho)

If the name on the compliance plate was holden it'd be a different story. Mine says Opel Corsa so i badge it accordingly.

Also, it doesn't matter what you've got at the flywheel or at the wheels. it matters how fast it goes.

Figures are for women, runnin is for men and i bet you my little NA 1.6 honda will be door to door, or even in front, of your high capacity heavy ass ford built, engineered and sold car.

Also, there are mechanics/DIY guys here. (puts hand up) And if you ask a technical question/comment you will get a technical answer. If you ask a shit question/comment you will get shit.

Peace

so i dont see nay harm in puttin opel badges on it.
plus as said before i think the opel flash looks nicer than the holden lion.
and i have seen plenty of TX5's gettin around that have been rebadged.
there is one in Gladstone that has FADZA in big letters up the side of it.
